What a beautiful rendition of this haunting classic. The lyrics remind us that no matter who we love or how long we live, nothing is permanent but only on loan.
Oh I was looking for a duo like this. This is the best way to play it, I think. You both are great. The lyrics are morbid, it has that hard-life pragmatism of the West, especially how the storyteller explains how he healed himself and how bitter it must feel. Though I'm not American, I surely enjoy this song, and I really liked your version. Hugs from a fellow guitarist from Belgium.
My mother used to sing this song to me and my brother when we were little. Now I'm singing it to my three year old. Amazing how time flies and how some songs just don't get old.
she could hardly utter the words clearly.....but loved singing it a million times for us.....that was our lovely daughter aged two years and growing then.....she continues to sing her life to glory...at thirty now and celebrating life always.
I filed this under my folk music category. I sang the last verse to my daughter and she was so startled and amused, I had to look up all the verses. Then I looked up this performance. Well done Haley and and Ed! It is comic and morbid, laughing at death and humanity. Very appropriate for 19th century America, where the average life expectancy was in the 40s.
Thank you for beautiful song and good memory to my little son in his childhood( 2 years now). He always listen to your music cover everyday and he sings along with you. Grateful from my heart.❤
This is how the song was meant to be sung. It's a beautiful and sad folk song, it was made to be simple. This is one of the best renditions of the song I have found.
Oh her voice is really special! I was looking for an old song my 91 year old Dad sings to his wife, my Mom, as she suffers in the last days of dementia in a nursing home. This didn't turn out to be the song, but I'm glad I found this treasure! Wish I could find someone who sings, ♫ Cootsy Koo, You love me and I love you, Cheeks are red and eyes of blue. ♫ ♥
@@fasteddiev I don't think so, I finally found the lyrics online, but not a recording. "You’re my darling cootsy coo, you love me and I love you, your cheeks are red and your eyes are blue for you are my darling cootsy coo. I don’t care if you go out with other men for you are my darling cootsy coo. "
@@maryannjwh2221 I'm intriqued..intrigued... if that's not the title, what was the title on the lyrics you found? Sounds kinda familiar... if not, it still sounds like a good song! (I'm 3 years late but hopefully you'll still find this and maybe think fondly on the song again as well 😊)
Hello both of you just ran on tear video I search for the song yours is the first I seen. I never knew all the lyrics to that song but it sounds heavenly when you play it and sing it thank you for sharing.

ed... your relationship to your daughter, thats why i want a family. your vids give me hope that one day i too will have this.... and i just wanted to say thank you
What I find so intriguing about these kinds of songs is how pretty much no two versions are the same. There are are always slight changes to the lyrics, or certain stanzas that appear in one and not the other. This performance here has the most total parts of any I have heard, and I appreciate having heard it. Fine work.
When my ex girlfriend left me for a wealthy guy I was so hurt. many people, my friends and my family told me that I will get a better life partner a more wholesome soulmate in future. Someone is waiting for me, someone who will be loving me genuinely is waiting for me. but the thing is that love is such an emotion that cannot calculate any consequences so I loved her, I loved her like the earth loves it's ocean, I loved her like a patriot loves his country, I loved her truely from my heart. I love my ex-girlfriend so much that I don't know whether I would be able to love another person whether she loves me genuinely or not. maybe my ex-girlfriend didn't love me but I loved her and that matters.
A very sad song but still lovely. Easily one of my favourite tunes. I actually sing this to my daughter to get her to sleep! It works and she doesn't seem to get nightmares from it. Maybe she's too young to fully understand it.
In what way is it a parody? Nothing about it is parodic. It's a song about a man whose daughter drowns and that is sad. If it's intended to create laughter then it's not doing a very good job. I find nothing funny about it at all.
@@colstreamer It is like the cruel nursery rhymes "all the children are [doing the right thing], only one [does the wrong and deadly thing]". Dark humour.
A great performance by both of you. Rest in peace, Ed Vollmer (1952-2023), you will be dearly missed.
Just the comment I hoped I wouldn’t see! Rest easy Ed. Your voice still sings to this day, and will for years to come.

Absolutely beautiful collaboration . Sounds very nice.
This is for me, the best cover of this song that I found until now. Thank you, it's beautiful!

two missmatched voices: hers is soft and tender, his is deep and overpowers hers when they sing together. But still a nice and sad song.
