    Nice addition to your shop. Very reminiscent of a Heald Universal Grinder that was rebuilt at the shop I served my apprenticehip at nearly 50 years ago. Heavy stable machine as well!

Will be interesting to see if yours has the hardened slippers on the slideways like mine. My J&S 1300 Cylindrical Grinder is similar, double swivel with in/external heads.

    I took a sawzall and cut some pads from a steel belted car tire I use to put between the skates and the machine base, the rubber grabs the skates and the machine quite well. After I cut them out I took a disc sander and removed the wires that were sticking out.

    • @swanvalleymachineshop
      @swanvalleymachineshop  2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Could I make a small suggestion?
    If it were me with the personal doors, I’d be inclined to put in two diagonal braces (in compression), just to obviate any future tendency to sag over time.
    The flat sheet metal will triangulate it probably enough, as long as no one kicks it or backs into it to deform it probably but you can never be too careful I guess.

      As a kid I remember watching an Allis HD 16 being loaded onto a low loader sideways, he pushed a little pile of dirt up beside the low loader and up and screwed on it went. That little pile of dirt was there for years. Every thing about that dam building job and some scrub clearing is etched into my mind, it was a big thing for a little kid in the mid 60s. Knowing the bloke, his tracks were probably a bit dodgy too. Jeff

    I still have nightmares from using machine skates - don't use them anymore. I ran into a rigging company here in the US that knew a better way. They used a series of hardwood rods - something like 30mm in diameter. As one rod come out - it gets placed in front of the machine - to steer a kick here and there. They used a lever to push the machine along. What was a nightmare of a job, ends up looking like play time.

      You just have to be super careful with skates & know what can go wrong .
      Never heard of wood rods being used before , would work providing the machine had enough of a flat area for them to run on .
      Steel round bar is the easiest but same again , the machine has to have a suitable base .
      There is the odd ''Wobbly '' ( tractor crane )come up for sale here , unfortunately i do not have the
      door height ! 👍
