Wowsers! Can't believe I missed this G'day Max, fantastic work mate, 👍 the new shop is an absolute credit to you, I'm so pleased for you Wonderful view from the rooftop there too 🙏
Max I am a big fan of Dee Dee's channel. I have also been using the Acetone /ATF and brass brush on my Clausing Lathe. I have been pleased with what I have done so far. Seeing you wearing the jacket makes me envy the cool weather you are having. Today We got up to 114 F. here in Texas and my Home air conditioner went out and too late to get a repairman out. At 10:00 pm it was still 100 outside and 90 in the house. Absolutely fantastic job on the shop but we expect nothing but excellence from you. Your work is always Top Shelf. Thanks again for bringing us along.
Great to see a hard working Aussie making a go of it in these hard times , an icon of engineering in ( 70 years ) South Australia has just closed ( due to Retirement )
I knew who’s channel you’ve been watching using Acidtone and brake fluid! That’s a nice size build for your shop. Thanks for sharing, have a great day.
A shop to be proud of Max. Looking forward to your future videos of the clean up of the JFMT, and the removal of the Saddle and the Apron to address that sticky traverse lever. Also looking forward to a peep inside its headstock to see what shape she's in.

Hey Max, I use Citrus Clean from Bunnings for getting the grime off the paint. Mix 50/50 with water in a spray bottle, spray on and leave for 10 minutes then wash off with water or wipe off with a wet cloth rinsed in water. Works a treat.

Wow, I just found your Chanel a couple of days ago. Initially I thought wow looks like this guy has a really nice shed and been in there for ever. I looked at your first video in the little shed and so I thought you must have found a really nice new shed, little did I know how much work you had to do to get there. Really appreciate your attention to detail
Ipoh, one more thing. If you haven’t painted/sealed your floors already now’s the time. I think Anthony Ruddy’s advice is good. Caustic soda or some strong surfactant will cut the old grease and dried oil with less elbow grease. Acetone and ATF will work but remember how many hours DD’s got into his projects. Maybe knock off the bulk of the petroleum before switching to the acetone/ATF to get the beautiful finish DD’s getting. Cheers
I hope your next video will show you wading through chips and swarf. I am green with envy All the new, to you, machinery and all that space. I know you'll put it all to good use. KOKO!.
Hooray. Nice to see it basically complete. That lift cart is handy. I picked up one for my shop. I wanted to build me a gantry, but steel prices are still stupid. Cheaper to buy one than to make one right now. Go figure.
Thanks Tom . It's so good to get to the end of construction . That's right , cheaper to buy one ! Lucky i was able to get that beam . The trolley will be a back saver for sure . 👍
I was mentioning to dee dee that I started using his formula as well. But I also dip a scotch bright pad in the ATF/Acetone mixture and use it under a palm sander. Does wonders and a lot faster.
G'day Max ... Shed looks good, & now you don't have to worry bout ~~ Rain Drops Falling on Your Head ~~ as the song goes. Lol 😆. The C.L.R Did a great job on the small section, & the second solution with the Autotrans oil, looks like good combination. One cleans the bulk, while the othe cleans & Imbeds lubricant into the beds etc. Great job
Quite a milestone finishing the building. This has been quite an endeavor to do mostly single handedly and I admire your ambition Max.I really like your clerestory windows as one can never get too much light into the workshop.
Max your can do attitude is something. You take on a project this size a pick away at it till its finished. The results are very impressive and brilliant. The crane will be a great project to see unfold in the future.
Yay Max!! The shed looks great. For cleaning your machinery, grab some caustic crystals from Woolies or Coles - add to cold or cool water. It'll clean the grease, make sulfur based oils inert, removes some oxidation and can also strip old paint. Scrub with a stiff brush or scouring pads. Just keep it away from soft metals like copper, brass or aluminium. Borax can be used too, in warm to hotish water - just don't mix the two together. Both of these are far cheaper than your current mix. Have fun - stay safe and well :)
Good one Max, the shed is coming along nicely and the roof and windows look great. I follow Dee Dee and he does a great job of machine resto. I'll send you a link of another channel that shows a good way of cleaning those ways with Scotchbrite and a Orbital Sander. I'm ordering the steel for my shed extension now before prices go up. Talk soon.

Gday Max, great to see the workshop near complete, it’s been a massive job that’s for sure, the windows come out really good, I’ll have to check out D D’s channel as well, since I made the gantry crane here it’s been use so many times, I’d been using an engine crane which is a total pain in the ass, I’ve got the gantry crane parked over the lathe and made up a lift for the chucks, I know there not big chucks but it a lot easier, the lift cart was a good idea, that’s going to be bloody handy, thanks for the update, cheers
Looking good max, i wish my new workshop was finished but with all the rain on the east coast i haven't been able to build my house so I'm still living/freezing in my workshop.. I've used the side of a soft bronze brush in my die grinder to remove rust from machine ways and it worked fine but but was still fairly slow being careful not to dwell in one spot
Max, I'm in total awe of your shed. That you basicly built it single handed is just mind blowing and a credit to your determination. If you would, How much floor area inside and the verandas too please. It certainly looks big enough to be future proof....
Hi Max. Regarding the rust removal on the machines, I have had very good results with Evapo-Rust. It is available here in the USA in liquid and gel. I think it is also available in Australia.
Max, You’ve got to be “proud and poor” after finishing your shop construction project. Next the lighting and wiring which will take away any remaining excuses you may have for getting those wonderful machines running. Congratulations on a huge success! Cheers, Will
Where I live the cost of electrical wire has risen to almost 3 times of what it was pre pandemic. I hate to think how much Max has spent due to these unexpected increases
Thanks . A while to go yet with the works to be done on some of the machines . And of course , waiting for Western Power to pull their finger out & sort out my wiring connection ! 👍
Shop looks great. Need lots of lighting though. For my 2 ton gantry crane, I made the posts from HSS 100x100x6. They are an inverted T (not A-frame) so I can slide it tight to my materials rack and lift the stuff off the shelf. 1.2m base with the castors mounted and about 2.4m tall to fit through my overhead door. It clears the length of my lathe so I cane lift stuff in and out easily. There are only two things I wish I had done and that is some stops to keep the trolley from sliding (will add to my to do list) and the other would have been to purchase some locking swivel castors (the kind you can lock out the swivel but not the wheel and make a rigid castor but these are $$$ and prohibitive when looking at 2000lb rating). I have swivels on all 4 corners, which is great for mobility in the shop to swing around machines, but as soon as I get it outside on the driveway, it wants to follow the slope. Being able to at least lock one end straight would allow it to be handled much more easily by myself.
Thanks . I think i will get away with fixed wheels as it will just go in the front section of the shop . I am thinking about running the beam through & past the ends of the a frame to easily cover the welding bench area . What size beam did you use ? 👍

Max, that acetone/hydraulic fluid is best used to loosen rusted bolts. Mix in a plastic bottle and squeeze some on rusted bolts. Seems to seep in better than most anything else. As for surfaces - not so much. You might want to try other products like scotchbrite pads and WD40 for surfaces. Evaporust is reusable if you can put it in a vat and let it sit for 24 hours. Muriatic acid with a bronze wire brush works great for pitted surfaces. Its fast but it is VERY caustic and toxic and needs to be neutralized with water/baking soda solution so just about anything else first. So many ways to work you tail off but you will get it. Have fun.
I am really speechless, looking at the size of the building and the fact that you have done it single-handedly! It looks terrific and will certainly be a wonderful place in which to work. Congratulations on a job very well done.
G’Day Max, the shop is looking good. It’s fun to hear the unique Oz birdsongs in the background too. 👍 Edit: I have one of the cheap & cheerful trolleys in my shop, use it lots, but I’ve found you have to throttle carefully on the downward stroke. Otherwise it rushes down in a most dramatic way. I hope yours is better regulated…
Both you and Dee Dee like that mix a lot. As I told him though, the success is mostly from the elbow grease applied from the arm and brass brush. Admittedly, elbow grease is becoming harder to find at any price. It seems as most people don’t have it anymore. The CLR is very good, I used it mostly in my fireplace. Don’t leave it on too long. It will take some metal off after a while.
You amaze me Max at your work ethic. I always look forward to and am impressed with how much you have gotten done since the last video as well as the quality of your work. I bought one of those lift tables to work on my mowers. However I went with the cheapy one from u know where. It saved the day when I had to do an emergency automatic tranny removal and replacement in the grandson's pickup. We laid the push handles down and had the truck jacked and supported high enough. Worked like a charm. Probably not recommended, but no drama as you would say. Cheers Max.
Bet you're glad to be over the hump on the building works Max. Looks fantastic mate, once you've fully set up, if you are hiring and can throw a relocation package in, keep me in mind lol. Cheers, Jon
@@swanvalleymachineshop That's true. It's really looking great from where I am sitting. It seems like you are setting up your place as a general purpose machine shop for walk-in customers. Is that the general plan? It would be great to hear a bit about your future plans for the business (or maybe it's just a massive hobby shop!). I hope I didn't miss an episode where you covered that.
Outstanding work on the new shop Max ! Looks Great ! Not sure if this is available in Australia, but I've had amazing results using "bar keepers friend" It's an alkaline cleanser works amazing on rusty metal. You do have to use it with water. Hope that helps.. Love your new shop ! Cheers !
Max, I've had good luck using steel wool and mineral spirits to remove the bulk of the surface rust. Block sand afterwards with 400 grit wet or dry paper using mineral spirits to keep the paper from loading. Light pressure wont remove any base metal
Hey Max how about putting a truss on the top of the beam less welding . All most looks like you could make two cranes a shorty and a longer one the shorter one would hold more weight . Just a thought .JM
Have you tried the green scrub pads for dishes and flat vibrating sanders and wd 40? I watch a guy do this on TH-cam and it worked. He sprayed it down and put the pad down with the sander on top of the pad.
Yes Max, the CE confirms EU safety standard compliance, so should prove to be better than the cheap and chearful, Good to see the build completed (bar a few trimmings), looking forward to the machine builds.
Workshops come up well mate. What breed is the hydraulic work platform please? Won’t be long now and you’ll be making chips in the shop , then you’ll be able to make back some of the construction casts. Have a good one mate 👍🇦🇺
A wood chisel , but my main one is a file that i removed the teeth with a surface grinder . I have to get a bit of carbide for my other scraper , it was made by another You Tuber in England . It's a proper one ! 👍
Looks good Max are you going to run your shop solo or have a helper monkey or another machinist .Are you going to do work affiliated with your day job after you retire . Thanks for the videos , man you knocked out a ton of work the last year great job .JM
Max, not saying anything against DD"s formula, as I've never tried it, but what I use is a formula passed down from my grandfather... ATF & Diesel. They do mix, and stay mixed. Just saying.
The ATF has popped up a couple of times in similar mixes . I hate the diesel stink though , that's why i buy the kero with out the stink ! Cost's a couple of bucks more but spent too many years coming home stinking of diesel , kero & hyd oil !!! 👍
@@carlkulyk366 Yeah, unfortunately 117C Death Valley hot days in summer is the trade off for mild winter days, isn’t it Max. 😜😂😂👍🇦🇺 Trying to imagine what size air con your going to need for summer to cool the cavernous space inside that new shop Max. We might hafta pinch a swamp cooler off the roof of your local Bunnings hardware outlet one night, while no one’s watching. 😜😂😂😉
Thx for the vid., Max. As mentioned by Graham earlier, I have used a maroon (very fine) ScotchBrite, WD40, and a palm sander on the stained ways of my lathe and was very pleased with the results. May try a light gray (ultra fine) or white (super fine) pad later to maybe give them more of a polished finish. Just the weight of the palm sander alone does all the work and the WD acts as a solvent/lubricant and floats the dirt up out of the metal to be wiped off. I would think the ATF/Acetone mix would give similar results. Have a look at the 10 min mark of this video th-cam.com/video/7LmQlQXLzX0/w-d-xo.html of a very neglected shaper table being cleaned this way. The dirt can be rinsed out of the pads with solvent for reuse.

Its fast but it is VERY caustic and toxic and needs to be neutralized with water/baking soda solution so just about anything else first. So many ways to work you tail off but you will get it. Have fun.
Thanks . CRC Evaporust is $71.00 Aust for 5 litre's , expensive stuff here !!! 👍
I am really speechless, looking at the size of the building and the fact that you have done it single-handedly! It looks terrific and will certainly be a wonderful place in which to work. Congratulations on a job very well done.
Thanks . It has been a long slog ! 👍
G’Day Max, the shop is looking good. It’s fun to hear the unique Oz birdsongs in the background too. 👍
Edit: I have one of the cheap & cheerful trolleys in my shop, use it lots, but I’ve found you have to throttle carefully on the downward stroke. Otherwise it rushes down in a most dramatic way. I hope yours is better regulated…
Thanks . Time will tell with my trolley ! 👍
the shop looks really good..
Thanks Doug . I have a Cat D10 ripper shank stashed away to make a couple of vices out of , like your one ! When i have some spare time 👍
Both you and Dee Dee like that mix a lot.
I agree with you about the elbow grease !
Cheers Max.
Thanks . Those trolleys are a life saver at times ! 👍
Bet you're glad to be over the hump on the building works Max. Looks fantastic mate, once you've fully set up, if you are hiring and can throw a relocation package in, keep me in mind lol. Cheers, Jon
No worries ! 👍
I think that massive shop could house my gear as well Max, what do you say to a workshop-sharing arrangement? :-)
Lol , The shop is pretty full now ! Amazing how much real estate these machines gobble up 👍
@@swanvalleymachineshop That's true.
@@CraigsWorkshop All of the above ! 👍
Outstanding work on the new shop Max ! Looks Great ! Not sure if this is available in Australia, but I've had amazing results using "bar keepers friend" It's an alkaline cleanser works amazing on rusty metal. You do have to use it with water. Hope that helps.. Love your new shop !
Cheers !
Thanks Dean . I looked it up & we do get it here . 👍
very very good shop max
Thanks . It was alot of hard work getting it all together . 👍
Max, I've had good luck using steel wool and mineral spirits to remove the bulk of the surface rust. Block sand afterwards with 400 grit wet or dry paper using mineral spirits to keep the paper from loading. Light pressure wont remove any base metal
Thanks . 👍
nice shop mate
Thanks . 👍
Good one Max .
Thanks . 👍
Hey Max how about putting a truss on the top of the beam less welding . All most looks like you could make two cranes a shorty and a longer one the shorter one would hold more weight . Just a thought .JM
Thanks . Could go that way . I love the look of the castellated beams though . 👍
Have you tried the green scrub pads for dishes and flat vibrating sanders and wd 40? I watch a guy do this on TH-cam and it worked. He sprayed it down and put the pad down with the sander on top of the pad.
Thanks . No have not tried them yet . Will give it ago in other areas 👍
Yes Max, the CE confirms EU safety standard compliance, so should prove to be better than the cheap and chearful, Good to see the build completed (bar a few trimmings), looking forward to the machine builds.
Sure, when it actually means “Conformite Europeenne” , but most often it means China Export. I wonder why they chose that...
Thanks . 👍
@@somebodyelse6673 Could be made there , but to different standards . 👍
getting a bit soft Max if ya need a scissor lift trolley for your beer!
I must be ! 👍
Bueno amigo yo iba a trabajar en un torno pero la bancada estába oxidada y le aplique gasoil y le pasé Zafra y largo todo el óxido 🙏
Good one . Zafra ? .... Whisky ? Hope it was not a waste of good Whisky !!! 👍
No amigo nada de whisky es un material abrasivo para limpiar 😸✌️
G'day Max, How will the change in temperature mess with the roof from summer to winter?.
It will have no effect , just the occasional creaking from the tin expanding . The insulation muffles most of that out .👍
@@swanvalleymachineshop Yeah I knew that was just pre-empting other comments. Shop is looking great, how's the bar coming along. lol
@@1ginner1 That's what that dividing wall is for ! 🍺🍺🍺
@@swanvalleymachineshop You the man, lol
Best built wood shed in Australia. 😉
Thanks ! Lol , wood shed . I have several ton's of Jarrah to get in there yet , from my wood slabbing days ! 👍
Thanks Max!
👍👍👍
Have your gave a thought to Evap o rust soaked rags covered with plastic let set .
Thanks . I have yet to try Evap o rust , it is super expensive here . 👍
@@swanvalleymachineshop it’s been my experience that it works well .
Workshops come up well mate. What breed is the hydraulic work platform please? Won’t be long now and you’ll be making chips in the shop , then you’ll be able to make back some of the construction casts. Have a good one mate 👍🇦🇺
Thanks . No idea what make it is . There are only European standard & safety stickers on it . I got it from a materials handling company . 👍
Max, electric power supply? Because of the large amount of mechine plus the odd bits
Waiting on the quote from the power supply company . They take forever ! 👍
Max what do you use for a scraper?
A wood chisel , but my main one is a file that i removed the teeth with a surface grinder . I have to get a bit of carbide for my other scraper , it was made by another You Tuber in England . It's a proper one ! 👍
Looks good Max are you going to run your shop solo or have a helper monkey or another machinist .Are you going to do work affiliated with your day job after you retire . Thanks for the videos , man you knocked out a ton of work the last year great job .JM
Thanks . I will be running solo . And yes the other question ! Cheers . 👍
even the chinese lathe is european because the design is european. how many hours invested in masaging the bedways?
A day and a bit so far ! 👍
Nice job on the shed Max, cyclone proof, rodent proof and snake proof.
Not so fond memories of cyclone Alby!
Don't be fooled by the stickers.
Cheers . 👍👍👍
PS: I looked for that channel that has the acetone/ATF idea but couldn't find it - any idea what the channel is called please? thanks, Craig
Hi Craig . Dee Dee is the channel . th-cam.com/video/H0jjuJNwvKk/w-d-xo.html
@@swanvalleymachineshop Thanks I'll have a squizz
Max, not saying anything against DD"s formula, as I've never tried it, but what I use is a formula passed down from my grandfather... ATF & Diesel. They do mix, and stay mixed. Just saying.
The ATF has popped up a couple of times in similar mixes . I hate the diesel stink though , that's why i buy the kero with out the stink ! Cost's a couple of bucks more but spent too many years coming home stinking of diesel , kero & hyd oil !!! 👍
You have a dream shop in a dream climate. 18 C in the winter? It can get -40 C or more here in the winter.
Thanks . Sounds like you are from Canada ! 👍
@@swanvalleymachineshop Yes I. Am. 18c is a mild summer day temperature where I live (Alberta)
@@carlkulyk366 Yeah, unfortunately 117C Death Valley hot days in summer is the trade off for mild winter days, isn’t it Max. 😜😂😂👍🇦🇺
Trying to imagine what size air con your going to need for summer to cool the cavernous space inside that new shop Max.
We might hafta pinch a swamp cooler off the roof of your local Bunnings hardware outlet one night, while no one’s watching. 😜😂😂😉
What's your trade?
Fitter & 1st class machinist . 👍
@@swanvalleymachineshop nice. I. Thinking bout heading back west, 10 years cranes and rigging, 7 years machining, but if a mixed bag of skills
Word to the wise that sheet rock dust rust metal quickly
Once it's finished & painted , should be ok . 👍
That's the quick way ! I watch a few of his video's , esp the planer machine ones . 👍
👍
Thanks . 👍
👍👍😎👍👍
Cheers . 🍺
Lookin good Max. Thanks for the look.
