We had a wonderful farm dog, a black lab collie mix, who went outside with our children. She was their playmate and protector. Best dog ever. We were on a dead end road, 6 acres, farm house, and a barn. Get a dog!

I love the idea of restoration rather than renovation! It makes me sad sometimes to see beautiful old houses that have been completely modernized on the inside to make it look like they were just built. Don’t get me wrong, I love looking at pictures of Pinterest perfect houses with all the new, trendy styles, but there’s often a certain charm to an old house that can get lost in the process.

One great thing about a property that size is that you could sub-divide the land and give a portion to the kids as they grow older.

That,s how we bought our home. We bought it for the view and land, not the house. I wanted a farm house and got a split level. But we are slowing turning it into the farm house we wanted. Wood floor are going in next month. We remodeled the kitchen and added barn doors. Slow going but we will get there.

Hi, I love this & it sounds so fun. I was raised on a farm also, loved the chickens & do much better when they can free range. Their eggs will be healthier & will cut down n the bugs. Have a rooster & you can have little chicks, just don't name then and enjoy eating chicken that you can trust. Strawberries, raspberries & grapes are just a few other things you can grow. I have apricot, nectarines & several kinds of apples. Sugarfree jam. & bottle your own fruit. Honey is so much sweeter that I used that to can my fruit. I could go on & on. Dry your fruit, fruit leather & just plain fruit without anything else is great & healthy for everyone. Just one more thing, raise your own beef & maybe a goat & make your own cheese. I will be watching. THANKS

My parents sold at least 4 houses while I was a kid, and we ALWAYS left the house. We're in North America. I just bought my first home with my husband, we saw 50 homes, and only ONE house did the people stay during the showing. It was so awkward, especially because their home had been very poorly renovated or not renovated at all, and they just sat there disapprovingly staring at us and making us feel very uncomfortable to look any deeper into the home. Suffice to say we got out of there fast, and certainly didn't make an offer!

I'm excited for your family as you move forward on your journey Lisa ! As a lifelong farm girl that raised my 5 children ( 4 boys & a girl ) on several hundred acres just 7 miles from their Grandparent's farm I understand your values and priorities very well . Neither my self , my Mother , her Mother - nor her Mother b4 her ever knew the meaning of ' taking our children out to play ' - they just went out to play ...and learnt , explored , developed decision making skills . That play evolved into work as they grew older - gathering eggs , weeding ect when very young then later milking , feeding stock , driving tractor ect . All my children leant young how to properly / safely operate a rifle - for hunting & occasionally protecting stock as we live in northern Canada where there are a lot of bears , wolves , coyotes , some Cougars that see calves as a delicacies of course ! Our eldest son was so responsible & willing he would spend the day baling hay 20 miles from home by himself - I was never worried ; he had been ' in training ' unknowingly from those very early years outn about playing & exploring as a little guy ; honing his decision making ability , judgement skills ect . I always felt children in town missed out on so much ; independence , freedom , ' built in work ethic ' , pride in being a valuable , contributing part of the family business , respect and deep value for the land , the weather , all elements of the natural world - just to name a few . I truly believe these are the gifts you will be giving your children when you make this move - the house itself is very , very far down the priority list at this stage ( as I'm sure a smart gal like you knows very well ) ! 😉 Enjoy the journey Lisa !!!😊❤️😊

Then there's the situation where your children are at home. Buyers find small children distracting. They came to see what you're selling, not how cute your children are! If I had not really like my present home, I would have turned this house down because of a "child issue". The first time we looked at this house, the home owner and two little boys left but returned before we were through looking. Her excuse? The little boys wanted to play. Later we requested another look and the youngest child whined about going shopping until his parents gave in and we were again denied a good look. They had had some trouble selling the house. We found out why!

As a former realtor, I can say from experience that it is best to leave when your house is shown. Prospective buyers feel uncomfortable when the current owner is there and hurry through a showing you want them to take the time they Ned to be able to visualize themselves living in your home. When I was selling I always new they were serious when they started to plan where they were putting their furniture. That never happens when the homeowner is in the room because the buyer felt uncomfortable discussing that when the current owner was there.

Can't wait for your new journey, and allowing us to come along When I was a child there were seven of us kids, and we played outside ALL day long. We only went inside to eat lunch, then played out until dinner, back outside, until dark. It was some of the best memories of my life. I applaud you for wanting that for your children. A lot of children today do not do that. Praying it all works out for you and your family.

I love it so much, and it has made a huge difference in behavior and attitude. Don't be surprised though if you still have to force them outside sometimes (most of the time! 😂) No matter how cool the outside is, they seem to want to be in by me! Yes to kids running around and exploring! My three sons and my daughter were country kids and it has served them so well. So much to learn from animals to gardens to tractors to snow mobiles to field cars to tree houses....I could go on and on. My kids (now grown in their mid to late 30's) can handle and create and work their way through anything. I truly believe it was the rural lifestyle! Two are teachers, one is a banker, and the other is an engineer and entrepreneur. Humble roots. I'm a nurse and have always believed in living "on the land" and letting it teach you. It will!!! Congratulations on seeking that wonderful family life for them. Looking forward to this adventure for you all, and ultimately your fan base!

Your advice is so spot on with waiting to do home reno projects until the money is there and doing it without debt. I cannot stress the sense of accomplishment and financial savings that comes with learning to wait. We took on a major reno of a rural property 3 hours away from our residence that could only have been done with patience. The land is gorgeous and exactly what we wanted. We e lived in our Victorian farmhouse for 28 years and we were able to plan a rustic cottage where we could age in place and have some sort of homesteading experiences.
My husband and I bought a property that we planned to move to once we retired. We were both working and the goal was to be completely debt free well before we retired so neither of us had to commit to working jobs. We each had our own small side businesses planned for “retirement” . We were then mid 40’s and early 50’s when we started a complete interior teardown 10 years ago. We tore the place down TO THE STUDS. We left no plumbing, electric, floors, interior walls, NOTHING but exterior wall framing, ceiling and floor joists were left of the original house. The benefits of waiting were many. First we scavenged a lot of materials like vanities, sinks, bought gorgeous semi custom kitchen cabinets, bought clearance bath and lighting fixtures, tubs etc. for cheap. this could only be done over time as we found deals on our travels and saved up the money for larger purchases. Our renovated home is the same size as the old one but open. Its hard to believe 10 years has passed and we are ready to move in. We are selling our farmhouse now and we will be able to pocket the equity BECAUSE WE DID NOT TAKE OUT ANY LOANS FOR THE RURAL RENOVATION. Being debt free is very empowering and worth every minute of not accumulating it.
I am so excited to see what you and your husband do with your new home. Our in town farmhouse took a lot of blood, sweat, tears and money over the 28 years too so I understand what you face but it does not have to be done right away. You are such a great example of what can be done with patience, frugality, imagination and time. Waiting affords the time to properly plan next steps. How nice that your kids can grow up on a homestead. All the best of luck to you!

I am so happy for you and your family. I will enjoy watching your move and all the nature your kids will be exposed to. Noises and what makes them. I learned about birds, wild animals, animal tracks and scat. How much fun for your family! Make sure to plant a strawberry patch! Can’t have farm without one!💞💞💞🥰

We just sold our house and moved. It was a crazy move. We are 1-1/2 hours away from our last home. I didn’t like the house-showing days. A couple of times it was during my son’s nap time. Once I had to wake him up- not a great idea! They stressed me out. I’m excited for you and your family. I cannot wait to see the big reveal!

You are such an inspiration to so many people. Staying out of debt is so important. I am debt free also. Raised my 3 kids as a single parent. Debt free. No mortgage. No cable. Kids play outside and read more without it. Thank you for being you. This world needs more inspiring people like you.

Do you have any bloggers you'd recommend or will you be doing in the future any videos on parenting topics (how many toys or what kind of toys should kids have? how do you discipline? how has your parenting changed over five kids?)?

So excited for you! We are on an acre and a half in a cheaply built 80's home, but we've been out here over 20 years now and it has seen lots of renovating as well as two additions to accommodate our seven kids. And it has been wonderful for our kids! There is always something to do and see in the country! Way to go on staying debt free!!

What state do you live in & if you’re comfortable saying...approximately how much does a home on 7 acres cost where you are?
I’m getting the itch to move today, haha. Space would be a dream. I’m in the SLC area & homes are around $500k in my neighborhood of modest, dated homes on

Around 300k for a house and 7 acres in our area. We live in MO.

I know you guys value health and wellness for your family so the only thing i would add is if/when you guys make alterations to the house make sure to be careful about potentially harmful building materials.(asbestoes/lead) etc. Not saying those things are garaunteed but they are a possibility given the age of the house.

A lot of the big economists are saying there will probably be another recession in 2020-2022. If you take out a loan, you could consider making sure it either plenty of financial wiggle room, or have a plan to pay it off in two years.

👍 we are currently on the fence to move as well people are constantly asking the same why would we move and sale our current home but like you said we would like more... I was feeling selfish for wanting more and not being satisfied by what we have...
I think this is helpful cant wait to see how and what you do.
