We work in small groups and play together on Zoom right now. We also learned the 1234 song chord pattern. I changed the words for my classes. Freestylin with the words. 1234 shut the door 5678 and the golden gate... We just played around with the lyrics in the moment - sang their names etc. keep doing what you are doing!

Been playing piano for 20+ years. If there's anything I always recommend people who desperately want me to teach them: It's their dang chords and scales! Didn't know there was a single phrase for it, "Diatonic chords". This is much easier to say. Thnx Pianote! I've never been classically trained, don't know how to read sheet, but can play pretty much any song ppl throw at me .. which are usually simple pop songs that use these simple chords. But i can still get complex songs, they just take a little more time. The point is chords and scales are my bread and butter. Can't do literally anything without them.
Thanks for good lectures easy to understand for a beginner. I have a keyboard since many years and have played for personal enjoyment with the accompeniment function using 3 fingers for the chords. I don't know reading notes but have ears for music so every melody I have in my head I easy pick out on the keys. Apart from that I have composed a number of songs. The problem is that as soon I try a real piano I feel like a complete beginner. Not only that the keys are so heavy but I have not exercised much on the scales, neither seriously exercised the finger control and independence. Yesterday I received a digital piano with 88 weighted keys and I have started to exercise the scales and finger control. Now I am going to learn playing piano for real and I am looking forward to get the help by your videos.
Hi. I have been watching your videos. You are very helpful for someone in the 50's who is trying to learn the piano on his own. My interest level went up recently, ever since I discovered Lead sheet or Fake sheet. I could spent hours now on the keyboard, unlike few months ago I dreaded 20-30 mins routines doing Czerny, Hannon, and simple 2 hands playing. Also it was so hard to learn a piece in one or two settings, so you can go on for weeks just to perfect it and then only to forget about few months later. You rely purely on brain and hand memories. Fake music sheets have facilitated the process so much. Now, I'm not so worried about my left hand, and focused mostly on the right hand on the melodies. There is a sense of accomplishment and joy to be able to played a song in few minutes. My left-hand has been playing mostly block, and inverted chords and I feel I need more improvement on the left-hand. I have been searching everywhere, But no one is focusing on this subject. Perhaps a video series will be nice on how to play fake music sheet from beginning level to advanced level. (I could understand some music teachers may be against using lead sheet since it is seen as as a short cut or a cheat sheet). It may include different left hand pattern on same music, simple broken chords techniques ( no need to be doing fast woogie boogies, I like most beginners is not interested in fast playing, but like to sound like a pro than beginner). I truly believed it should be a series of videos rather than a 5 mins touch on the subject. The subject on arpeggio alone is so advanced that it will need much needed attention. Thanks
Very nice lesson and idea. A good way to practice this, along with learning your scales in order of circle of fifths is to do this exact thing. Say i learn my C scale. Practice arpeggios and inversions. Learn all these diatonics. I have a song. Then u learn G major adding that F#. Learn the diatonics. Now you can play all your songs in a different key. Keep circling around the circle of fifths. Now learn ur D scale with F# and C#. Arpeggios. Inversions...etc. Learn the diatonic chords of that family. Rinse repeat. Not only will you be competent in all your scales as you learn them, but you'll also simultaneously without losing time learn a whole song structure. Once you've learned all of these your only real unexplored territory from a beginner's point of view is delving into intermediate to advanced stuff with different flavors of chords. Dominants. Sus. Maj 7. Maj 6. Diminished. And a bunch of other flavors. Many of which you will probably pick up along the way anyway.
Pianote, I hope all beginner/intermediate piano students - and their teachers -see this video. Coming to the piano as a long-time guitarist, it was natural for me to see music as a collection of chords rather than a somewhat mysterious collection of notes that I, as a piano student, had to learn in order to be a pianist. I think that the majority of adult learners of the piano really just want to be able to play passable versions of music they enjoy and focussing their practice on chords is a great way to reach that goal in the least amount of time.

MorTobXD 11 and 13 are pretty much impossible for most people to play and Liszt could reach up to 13ths.
