My Xbox sounds the same way when it's reading a disc.. Maybe it doesn't like how dusty I let it get while I play my PC.
You get that "sawtooth" on other engines too, but the rest of the harmonics are characteristic of a 3 shaft engine, of which only RR are in mass use in the west. Have a listen to the An-225 engines too if you get a chance, should sound similar if the microphone isn't overwhelmed by the shockwaves that come out of them
Flown on loads of RB211 757's and you're right, had the AN-225 fly over not too long ago and it sounds similar, as does the AN-124. The flight crew always made a point of how overpowered the 757 was.
I hate the buzzsaw sound of the Rolls. It the one sound that makes me uneasy every time I fly. And I'm generally very relaxed with everything while flying.
@@ingentis_music I believe "Sawtooth" refers to the sound wave profile. It is a technical description of the sound, while "Buzzsaw" is a common colloquial description of it.

Absolutely magnificent sound from the RB211s! This is also rare footage of G-LSAC back when she was in Jet2’s grey/red livery, since she has been in the ‘Jet2 Holidays’ livery for quite a few years now.
Flown on loads of 535C and 535E4 757's through the 90's, sounds just as amazing in the cabin, plus you can kind of feel the vibration. I miss flying on these.
Thanks for sharing. When I was growing up in St. Louis we lived southeast of Lambert Field, directly on the departure path for the main runways. I remember when TWA started flying L1011s out of Lambert and the growl of these fantastic engines when those big beauties would lumber toward the sky over the baseball field I spent many an hour. I actually got to ride in one of those when I took a trip to Orlando when I was 9. Great times plane watching during those days.
Had the pleasure of being build inspector on the 03 modules of the first production test RB211-535 engine and first two flight engines built. Wonderful little engine sounds fantastic too. (Left RR in 1983 to emigrate to OZ)
What a beautifull sound. You captured the "Buzz saw sound" perfectly. I always listen for it when taking off !! (i used to work on the 211 engines prior to retiring)
This is to planes what the Taurus locomotive is for trains, though this sound is amazing, the Taurus sound is hilarious, with the 1.5 linear scale of notes.
From what I was told, the 'buzzsaw' sound is caused by the tips of the blades in the engines breaking the sound barrier. Is this true? If not, what causes this distinctive noise?
When you cut woood with a power tool, you’ll get a buzz saw sound. When you cut air with a power tool, (jet engine) you get a buzz saw sound. Science! Called sarcasm. Maybe. Maybe I’m right
If that's the video I'm thinking of, that's the noise of the fans rattling on spin down, because until it's spun up they're loose in their mountings. That's different to the sound people are talking about here.
I miss hearing the RB211 on the Tri-Stars as well.......in fact I always associated the RB211 with the L1011. Pretty sure it's because it was it's only engine option. Long Live The Tri-Star!
As a flight attendant I can tell you that there is no natural high, than sitting at the 2L door on a 757 taking off with RB 211 engines! When the pilots throttle back on climb out, all the customers look at you, as if we lost both engines.
Soon there will be none left which is such a shame, The 757 such a great looking aircraft. There will be the RB211 sound still around but not attached to a great bit of kit like this... Magic
I had a friend, who passed a few years ago from cancer, who flew the left seat of the 757. He said it was hands down his favorite commercial aircraft, similar to driving a small car with a giant engine. Didn't DC-10's and MD-11s use this engine? Those birds had a very distinctive growl in flight. (I live under Paine Field flight path, so every new 777, 767, 747, and most dreamliners fly over our house. It is the sound of employment, but the Dreamliner is a VERY quiet machine.
I remember how much cooler the Lockheed TriStar sounded compared to the DC-10 because of this engine. Even more intense were the British Airways 747s with Rolls-Royce engines.
I loved the sound of the 707. While idling and of course the take-off and climb buzz. Those sounds sound on that airplane meant business! The 757 comes close.
Something I have to ponder about this noise - when the engineers first designed the first engine that made this sound (not sure if that would have been the RB211, probably something before it) ran it up to full power and this noise was heard for the first time, what did the engineers think? Did they anticipate it from their design, or were they totally caught by surprise? I could imagine them being terrified at first, thinking something was horribly wrong, that the engine was tearing itself apart, and immediately shutting the engine off. Only after some time figuring out that nothing was wrong, the engine was running normally, the sound is not indicative of either a malfunction or anything bad for the engine, and it can run like that without being damaged.
That 'roar' is pretty standard on older turbofans. Maybe not the first ones, but certainly the RB211, V2500 and CFM 56 class engines. Later ones, such as the Trent 900 generally manage blade tip shockwaves better, which is why you'd have a hard time hearing one on an A380. That generally minimises the sound of the shockwaves, which is still there, but gets drowned out by the rest of the sound made by the engine.
Well now I feel silly! I didn't notice the position of the other jet at 1:35 and then when I saw 1:45 I paused the video and the flash was centered over the LG door. It was just an artifact of pausing the video. After your reply I can now get it to pause with the flash on the beacon.
