Cisco C9800 WLC FlexConnect Configuration

- I'm still getting used to the new configuration model of the Cisco Catalyst 9800 WLC. We must utilized Tags & Profiles and assign them appropriately to access points so we can broadcast the WLAN with the desired settings.
This video goes over the configuration of FlexConnect using my C9800-CL on VMware.

Must say, this is one of the most un-intuitive devices I've ever had the misfortune to configure. One day (soon I hope) we should get all the Cisco GUI software writers in a room, and show them how easy it is to configure a Fortigate system, and suggest to them that not everyone else in the networking world wants (or needs) to jump through hoops and puddles just to get the simplest of systems operational.
I know what you mean, Duncan! I often find myself getting lost in the GUI or clicking way too much. Like you said, there are many other platforms that do this easily. I do agree with Fortigate having a good GUI. It's very simple to configure different parameters with minimal clicks.
Totally agree. The naming convention is terrible, you never know what you actually configure, which setting applies to what, etc. I don't like it very much.

I am working on implementing a 9800-CL controller and will need to migrate 40+ different sites of APs to the new platform. Configuring this thing has been an absolute nightmare.....

The 9800 is not an easy thing to get up and running 😂 I'm also currently doing a migration and it's been challenging.

It's a tricky one. It's not very clear what the setting does either, without looking at the documentation.
thanks for the excellent explanation. i have a question :) how can you see such SSID details at macbook. i have that macbook too but i dont see ssid details ?
You can use an app such as WiFi Explorer

Do u have any video for ssid with mac authentication via external radius server? Or external radius configuration for mac authentication on wlc?
I don't have a video for that but I did work with a client that did just that. Wasn't fun.
I loved the video! I have successfully configured my access points to utilize Flex technology. However, I'm currently struggling with adding a second SSID to the same APs. Can you offer any guidance? Thank you!
You'll need to add the SSID to the WLAN profile.
Good tutorial, what should I do if I have a remote site with a native vlan and different vlans from the central site and I want to propagate the same ssids? Thank you.
You’ll need to leverage AP Join and Policy profiles to change those VLAN tags.

If I want to deploy a Cisco 9800-CL vWLC with some flexconnect APs in local switching mode, what will be my port configuration ? Will it be an access or Trunk port
This is for the WLC side port.
You would just need an access port
I have to configure this on a remote branch. how the AP will register to my WLC? I have two AP on my local site and they work fine without problem but I don' t know if the only request of the AP to join WLC is they have to know each other by routing protocols?
Do you have a VPN between the sites?
What if I want to broadcast more than one SSID? Since I can configure only one VLAN for the Policy Profile -> Access Profiles?
You would create the SSID and configure the necessary tags and profiles.
I configured 9120I as an EWC/AP at the same time. I'm having issues where Android phones are not receiving apps notifications like FB or Instagram alerts. However, Iphones don't have this issue. Wondering if you've encountered this issue? Cheers
I have not encountered that issue with the 9120.
@@RowellDionicio finally fixed the problem. Under Policy Profile>Access Policies> DHCP TLV Caching was unticked. After I ticked that, the notifications started working. I've almost given up.
I deploy flexconnect multiste, AP vs WLC on different site (not like different vlan). I turn on central dhcp, authentication, switching, associate. If I choose vlan default then client obtain ip auto but If I choose vlan other on HO site, client not obtain ip. Can you give me some suggestion?
You have central dhcp on. does that site have the VLAN?
Hi, I have a problem, my AP is registred but in "Radio Interfaces" both interface 2.4 and 5.ghz is Operation Status is "Down", do you know any reason why this happens?
My My problem was that in the "Country Code"
is the 9800 WLC free to install on ESXi?
Yes. It's the 9800-CL. What you'll need are licenses. You'll have a trial period.
