Great video Keith! I've always wondered about this aspect of WLCs.
During a hotel event that I was managing, our NOC had to do this very thing in order to keep the client's network running. Clients told us that they were coming with 2000 devices to the event space that needed wireless access so we configured the network with a /20 subnet and 500 Mbps of bandwidth just to be safe. On day one of the event SolarWinds started freaking out because not only had they surpassed 2000 devices but exhausted the DHCP pool in a matter of minutes and maxed their bandwidth (thank God we had a 10 Gbps ISP circuit). All told, by the end of the event, 8000+ devices were connecting to the wireless network each day over the 4 day event, and were consistently using 2 Gbps of bandwidth down during their breakouts and general sessions. The group was doing online tests and surveys that all attendees had to take throughout the entire event in order to receive credit and so everyone needed wireless access (a small detail the meeting planners didn't tell us), and trainers were actively downloading content and videos during their sessions. We ended up linking 5 VLANs/subnets together in our Cisco 5520 WLC in order to handle all the devices and better manage their bandwidth. Needless to say, that first day of the event, my team and I were sweating bullets.

Hi Keith, another great video, option 43 info was very useful. I have a similar setup on home Wi-Fi lab. Initially I was having issues with the AP's not joining WLC. After a bit of T shooting finally got them talking to each other. WLC download image to AP's. Love it when you get the blue solid LED. Having the correct date on time helps on the WLC. Many thanks..

I've only ever gotten the hex TLV to to work when using option 43. The other methods are hardcoding the IP on each ap. (no thank you) or adding a DNS entry to I believe its cisco-wireless-controller. I've seen that work as well.

I'd be happy to get your feedback !? Pls note that this situation is concerning also IP phone and any other equipment that use the wireless link. • @KeithBarker

Thank you for the question Okpala. In a PT DHCP server, just put the IP address of the WLC (there is a spot for that), and that will offer the IP address as option 43 in DHCP (within Packet Tracer).

Depends on on what you want to achieve. If you use normal wireless configuration, access port should do the job but, if you want to get into flex connect groups, we might need to to make the ap connected port to trunk. So, it always implantation dependent and what you are trying to achieve

Hi Keith. If you make an interface group, and your using different subnets like that, surely you will have problems with DHCP renewals when roaming clients get dumped onto the other VLAN. I'm wondering how do you solve that problem, since it will disconnect them and re-connect them (which will be quite visible on a video conference, where'as if you used the same subnet throughout the SSID, the roam would be almost seamless).
