They are considered a major blue-eyed soul group of the period. The band's music combines elements of soul music and light pop.
The Box Tops cover "A Whiter Shade of Pale", a song by Procol Harum that was issued as their debut record in May 1967. The single reached number one on the U.K. Singles Chart in June 1967 and stayed there for six weeks.
It made it to number five on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and was one of the anthems of the 1967 Summer of Love. The song is one of the most commercially successful singles in history, having sold more than 10 million copies worldwide.
