Do Bass Really Eat Turtles?

- Fishing a turtle lure for largemouth bass! It's a perfect day to be out in the kayak on a quiet little lake, lets see if we can catch a few fish!
Gear used on this trip:
Lure: Lunkerhunt Prop Turtle amzn.to/42UZzKY
Rod: St Croix Bass X 6'6" MH F amzn.to/3PuSZHU
Reel: Daiwa Zillion 7.1 amzn.to/3pePniG
Line: Power Pro Super Slick V2 30lb amzn.to/3NJ7jva
I got a 7.2 LB largemouth in ND this late spring from the kayak. I couldn't believe it. Half the reason I decided to try kayak fishing was this channel and I've really come to enjoy it.
That’s awesome! A 7+ is a monster this far north!
@@ndyakanglerseriously… i’ll find smallies that big but largies? damn.
@@bozleyanglingit’s kinda the other way around. Margie’s tend to be much bigger than smallmouth and if you’ve caught a 7 lb smallmouth that is like equivalent to a 12 or 14 lb largie
@@ndyakangler
Why is that? Just the cold keeps them from feeding year round?
I know you dont want to disclose where you fish but it would be really cool to know more about the lake your fishing? Size? Public/private? ND or MN? Depth? Fish usually caught? Thanks!!
Back casts into another rod..."Oh, that's awesome". Either you are an editing master or you deserve a medal for not dropping a litany of four letter words! Can't say I've ever kept so calm when it's happened to me
I’m glad he kept it in the video. I was under the impression NDyakangler never made mistakes.
@@smelltheglove2038 Agreed, that makes me feel a lot better about some of my blunders!
@@ejayman I chucked a jig into a tree yesterday. Two weeks before that I tied on a brand new 25 dollar swimbait and got it snagged in a fallen tree. Damn lure never touched the water once.
@@smelltheglove2038 sendin out my prayers for ya man, good times will come brother ;)
@@ShinyPants_OG haha! To be fair to myself, Ive caught four over 4lbs this past week. That’s pretty good for South NJ/SE Pennsylvania.
I'm always impressed how quickly you return the fish to water, so many anglers weigh or check length or take pictures and their fish seem so lethargic upon release. Enjoy the channel.
when you catch so many fish it's not a big deal anymore to you
He's filming so no need to take pictures.
Ehhhhh you got to make sure your fish is in regulation if you want to keep it.
Back cast into another rod; causing the big one to get away by mishandling the net. Now that's real life fishing and I'm glad you showed it. Many content creators would hide the screw-ups which happen to all of us. To your credit, you showed us the screw-ups. The lessons learned are 1) the slightest miscalculation can lead to a screw-up, 2) maintain a sense of humor when a screw-up happens, and 3) screw-ups can happen to the best of us. 😎
If you don’t screw up atleast once are you really even fishing lol
Love your vids - glad you showed what happens to us all - no matter how many years you have been at it.
I've got a hollow body frog with the same style propeller feet. It's always catching weeds too, I'm not impressed with it at all.
@@Charactermatters650🎉🎉😂😂😂2a
😊
Thank You!! For showing the tangle with your stored rods! Happens to us infrequently and makes us feel like noobs every time. If it happens to a pro like you then I won’t sweat it anymore😊
Yea Kathy it's nice to know we aren't the only fishing folks in Kayaks that do that , were all human, pros & amatures have these moments too. LOL We just yell at ourselves & untangle the mess then go back & catch some fish. 🐟🐟
Hahaha yea that was a great add. Hey cant be the super edit where everything is a win. That shows the humbleness he has. I snickered a little.
He shows his human side from time to time lol
Appreciate the truth in advertising. Proves he is a real fisherman.
Agreed!
Havent been able to get on the Kayak in about 6 weeks because we just had a baby. So i throw you on the TV and its almost like i went out myself. Appreciate the content bro.
Man, you better just accept the fact right now you might not be doing much fishing this season.
@@smelltheglove2038accepted lol
@@TheBuffaloJetFan hahahaha. Congrats by they way. My youngest is 11. Once they get older you can take them with you, and instead of getting yelled at for fishing too much, all of the sudden you’re father of the year for spending so much time with the kids. It’s an investment.
Congratz on the kid! And I'll cast a line for you, because if you're smart, you're only fishing maybe twice this year lol.
I love watching your fishing trips on the TV when my kids and wife went to bed, helps me relax from the busy day. Absolutely amazing content, and love your calmness and skill
The Bob Ross of fishing. Amazing narration. Thanks for all the videos!
Thank you. I've been trying to figure out who he reminds me of 😂 thank you
was thinking the same thing
Single most common comment on his videos...
Well said 😂 love this channel 🎉
Not even close to Bob Ross!,,, Stop!
Woke up, chugged water, shower, checked phone, and this gem was in my TH-cam feed. Gonna be a good day!
It’s 9 a.m. just got back from the lake after catching nothing. Finishing my coffee now that I’m home and getting ready to live vicariously through this channel😂
Whenever I have a bad day on the water I can be comforted knowing he's out their slaying pike, muskie, small mouth and largemouth
I just started fishing. I haven't been having any luck, so I come jump in the kayak with Matt and have a great time 😂
A bad day of fishing is better than a good day at work. Your videos are the best! So relaxing for me, after a long stressful day of work.
Dude you ain't kidding. One of my fav ways to unwind after a stressful day of work.
Most underrated TH-cam fisherman. I learned how to use a spook and whopper plopper in my local river. Been crushing musky and smallmouth for 5 years because of you. Turns out my river is an untouched gem like yours
One of the most interesting lures I’ve seen in some time. Awesome video as usual Matt!
Ahhh, he reveals his human side and admits he got a little angry for knocking that bass off with his net. Love this channel. Good channel to watch to learn certain techniques with different lures.
Yup, many narcissistic TH-camrs with big fragile egos wouldn't be able to show themselves losing that fish.
The perfect start to my morning
This is what I said in my head as I clicked.
Wish there where lakes like this in ny
Lmao me to man me to
💯
The perfect cap to my night ....... cheers good sir!
I think they would hit a chunk of car tire…I’d like to see that if you get bored!!!! Thanks for taking us along, Matt!!! Can’t beat the wacky rig, though!!!
I've been watching this channel for awhile now, maybe 3 years, and always like the idea of kayak fishing. Never done it though...until yesterday.
Not many fish (1 largemouth, 1 pike, both 14 inches), but it was definitely fun and unique experience for me. Hope to do it some more.
Apparently, Turtles are on the menu!
You are my favorite freshwater fisherman video guy. I like Your descriptions of what You are doing and general presentation. Keep em' coming!
Matt, watching Mr Bass hit the wacky worm was definitely a highlight of the video.
Thanks for not cutting out the “real” moments that most of us experience regularly. It gives me some solace knowing I’m not the only one who has hooked his other rods on a cast.
17:28 that is the best sight a fisherman can experience. The brief, greenish shine of a monster slurping your bait.
I'm so glade you left in the tangle with the other rod. Shows how much even a very experienced fisherman can have funny hang ups.
Hey, I just wanted to share something, I love watching the videos. Me and my grandparents always go for a week trip up to a lake at a camp that we have been going for my entire life and my grandparents lives for 60+ years, and let me say. Watching your videos get's me more and more excited about taking the sportsman fishing boat up there to rip some bass and pike, Either way at all times, love watching the videos. Keep it up, Have a great year:)
I did enjoy my day on the lake! Thanks for letting us tag along!👍
Friggin lerge mewth bass there bud. Lol. I’m in the south so I couldn’t resist giving you hell about the accent difference 😂 but dang I love your videos dude. You’re gentle with the fish and you’re just an intelligent angler. Super relaxing to watch. Lotta love from Carolina!
You, Richard gene the fishing machine, and BlacktipH are what give me life on YT. God bless you man. ❤️🎣🙏🏼
You inspired me to get into kayak fishing. Just placed my order yesterday for my first kayak. Can’t wait for all the adventures. Love all your videos!!
This is more my type of day… tangled my rods together. Missed the fish/got shook. Wildly try to swing my lure around cause it has weeds (mine come from poor casts though, not because a baby bass got a hold of it) lol 10/10 vid brother. Much love from MN. Me and my 3 sons love your vids. Keep’m coming!
Maybe need to mod the hooks like you do on your frog lures?
There was a time when I would have been laughed out of my own boat if I ever pulled something like that out of my tackle box! :-) But I fished with a rough bunch. There was one lure in particular back then, called the Cree Duck. It was a hard bait, just sat on top and swam a straight line when retrieved. I guess it was meant as a joke lure - one of the guys bought one just for amusement, but didn't dare to tie it on. But now, with all the realism possible with the soft plastics, those baits look like they score pretty well.
And you still have the best fishing channel on ANYtube!
Thank you for that!
Retrieving this lure will take practice. Most turtles aren’t skiing across the top. At least that’s my experience. Beautiful setting, the sounds are amazing. I’m an early bird and there’s nothing like the sounds coming off and around the shoreline. Fantastic video Matt. Continued success !
I did the same back cast mistake last summer but completely snapped my rod sitting behind me, sucked but remained cool and kept fishing. Awesome new video! Much love and respect!
Just found your channel, i have to say after watching the high energy fishing channels yours is souch more informative and relaxing as fishing should be!
Only been watching this channel for last few years but it's by far my fav. I luv the glass water bassin vids.
Inspired me to get my first kayak last year and i haven't looked back.
It's always the one that got away that seeds our obsession to keep searching for that one. Love it man I'm under the same curse. I honestly wouldn't call it a curse but a blessing to appreciate what the wilds of our surroundings can offer. Love the content, keep the line tight!
I've noticed that topwater lures like that..that have a single double pointed hook where the points turn in towards each other slightly I started bending the points parallel to each other with a pair of needlenose & I started getting a better hook-up ratio...jst food for thought it helped me hope it helps others out there...tight lines ya'll,,,👍
Dude, I hate when I cast into my rods in holders lol. It’s such a bad feeling. Great adventure out there Matt. Looks like it would do pretty well without the stinger hook. That was a funny lure, and you caught some good ones with it.
Your vids are like Saturday morning cartoons for adults. Great way to start the weekend
Mans voice is so soft and calm and its amazing keep up the good work
I’d love to see an all time greatest catch compilation!!! I love the way your videos are setup either way though!
Awesome suggestion!!
I've used the Lunkerhunt frogs. I have two of them. They're good baits but the only problem i have with them is the the trailer hook. They hang up up easily and pick up and drag grass and muck back every cast. But i have caught nice fish with them before. Another good video Matt. Love your videos brother.
I am convinced that you are either the Fred Rodgers or Bob Ross of bait casting. I am leaning toward "The Joy of Fishing!" Welcome to the neighborhood!!
I saw a huge bass probably 6+ pounds grab a big turtle in a pond he held it in his mouth for like 10 seconds then spit it out
Nice! I just got back from a two-spot run, two shore spots on two different rivers. No pike behind bridge pilings or suspended in front of rip-rap at the big one, two very nice 2.5lb-3lb smallies under the bridge over a trout stream.
Smallies on a light spinning rod, 6lb mono, and a silver Husky Jerk.
Sounds super fun!!
Yeah it was good, I’d never caught smallies that far up river there. The Husky Jerks are great for working deeper runs and pools in small rivers for the bigger trout, but today it was a couple of smallies.
Your serenity is intoxicating.... great stuff
As usual Matt your video's are by far the best to watch!!! Thanks for sharing!
Always enjoy watching you pull them in .. like to see you fish a hollow body frog this time of year , could use some pointers ... Thanks for the video....
That's why it's called fishing and not catching! Great stuff, Matt!
Some great looking fish. Always a great day when I can watch another one of your videos
Learn so much from your quiet commentary! TFS 👍🏼😎🎣
You caught some good ones today, two nice largemouth smashed adrenaline pumping!!!👊🏿
What a stunning place. Thank you so much for taking us there.
Another awesome video. Thanks for making the content you do. Finding your channel was a big inspiration for me to finally pull the trigger to get a kayak to take out on the river nearby. Finally got to go out for the first time today, unfortunately only caught a tree branch this time but it was still a lot of fun and I got back to a new video to watch lol
Gotta say just started watching you a few weeks ago already my fav angler on TH-cam . You remind me of an outdoors Bob Ross
This guy is the Kevin Vandam of kayak’s! One of the best on TH-cam! 👍
Love how you didn't edit out your foul up with other rod behind you! Cheers
There's some trees that were blown down into my favorite bass lake. They've been there for nearly two decades. Right about this time of year they're usually covered with dozens of turtles sunning themselves during the morning to noon hours. Had no idea they were potential bass meals.
Bass are an amazing fish. They will eat anything they can can fit in their mouths. So much fun. I prefer large mouth to small mouth. Both are alot of fun to catch.
When you're retrieving the lure that's probably the world's fastest turtle...lol
I just listen to this guy when I'm playing games lol
Cool to hear your thought process as you figure out a new lure.
It’s always funny looking at the top side of lures just like this one….it has a nice and realistic looking shell and all that however the fish doesn’t even see that side 😂
First thing a lure has to catch is an angler.
That tail walk was awesome.
You are an awesome fisherman!! Lots of fun to watch 👍👍
As a kid I took an old school clothes line clip and attached a hook and eye. It caught bass. No paint no flash no real shape. Just motion in the pads.
Yeah I’d carve sticks and put hooks on them or trim garage sale plastics to different shapes. I caught a bunch of bass out of our paddle boat!
idk how else to describe this, but you are the Bob Ross of fishing
I just saw that someone commented this exact thing on this video already lol
Buddy, I am jealous that you have such a beautiful place to go. I could be there all day and not be disappointed if I caught a thing. Vista for the soul. Thank you.
Absolutely always love the content. watching your stuff always makes me itch to go fishing. i get excited maybe as much as you when i seen the water explode. Thats got to be one of the most fun things to see is the top water explosion of a bass hammering a lure. Im surprised at most of those spots there was no bites. I seen so many fishy spots most are the ones you hit and no bass. I would of bet anything those were a guaranteed spot. Great stuff keep them coming. Much love from Houston,Tx
“Tangled up my turtle”, so many funny thoughts come to mind from hearing that…
Hey man I have been watching ever since I seen the first duck lure video and I love the videos thanks man
as always thank you for showing the mishaps too like the rods getting tangled. keeps it real, i just spent 10 minutes under a tree trying to figure out all my tangles the other day lol. thank you for the video
It’s not so bad if you can find a nice spot in the shade to do the untangling!
My 11 year old loves watching you. She calls you fun guy.
Matt I just finished watching this new video. I call it my pregame warm up. I will be on the water in 30 minutes using some of your techniques . I doubt I will do it as well as you. Thanks!
How'd you do?
@@projectsix1984 I waded a local river on a very hot day. I kept throwing to deep water with limited action. I switched to a 3" Senko whacky rigged and started throwing to the shallows. Bang! Bang! Bang! I had about 10 smallmouth and probably 15 rock bass. Nothing huge as most of the Lake Erie smallmouth had gone back out into the lake. Fun day with some spunky fish.
@@johnweber2247 awesome! Nicely done 👍
If you have ever watched a turtle swim, you would see that they do not swim along surface... they will pop up to breathe, but are relatively motionless at that time. They are underwater swimmers. A bass seeing that lure is going to think frog (or small mammal).
Yeah, all the bass see is something alive that fits in it’s mouth. I’ve found a baby turtle in a catfish’s stomach, tho.
That’s not always true. I’ve had baby turtles swim, head out of the water, chasing after top water lures.
How many frogs u see walkin' the dog on top of the water? 😂
Great video Matt. Have you ever thought about listing fishing conditions for the day of the video? Kind of like how Bill Dance used to do at the beginning of his TV shows. Thanks again!
Seems like the turtle 🐢 is kind of a high maintenance lure. Catches a lot of stuff and has to be cleaned almost every cast. But hey,if it catches fish 🎣 it’s a good lure! Thanks for posting another great video, you are the only fishing 🎣 channel I subscribe to or watch.
Really enjoy your video's, I just got me one of them lunkerhunt turtle lure and it's fun to fish with also thanks for sharing.
I put my feet up to watch this and woke up several hours later wondering what day it was. 😂
Dude your like the Bob Ross of fishing lol ! Thanks for the great videos
i love that you didnt edit out the turtle wrapping around your other pole. made me smile, been there a million times hahah
Bye the way my uncle lives in your neck. A little west and south of Detroit lakes. Ben up in that neck a lot sense I was a kid.older man of 63 now, still fish and boat and kayak down here and catch a bragable amount of river bass. Love your Chanel.
There's a ton of good lakes to fish in that area! I'll usually stay a little ways north or south of DL to avoid some of the traffic though.
Great episode. Keep up the great work.
I enjoy the variety of lures your using. Just proves the action is the enticer.
What a beautiful lake. I rarely take my yak out now because the only local waterways near me are always packed with bass boats and recreational kayakers. I'd love to have a little secret spot like this to just go out and be alone all day on the lake.
The literal bob ross of Freshwater. Thank you sir
When you caught the rod in the back of the kayak, I did the same thing today LOL.
Caught a smallie last year here in Indiana bad deal hooked him deep so he had so be invited to supper .When I cleaned him he had a small turtle in his gizzard that was still alive. Nursed him back to health and let him go . Turtle bass are scrumptious.
YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO BassMang ! ! ! !! 👋🤓
4:03
did you see that huge splash straight out from your lure.. looked like a Megalodon jumped over there 🤪🤪
20:25
what kinna fisherman are you huh, "cant catch em all" is defeatist talk... stay out there an get sun burnt to hell an back an catch em all ffs lol 🤣
p.s
im not sure if you look at the farmers almanac before you plan your excursions but the almanac says that due to weird weather this summer
the fishing wont be what it usually is.. maybe ya gotta try some new stuff this year since the fish gonna be wonky this year..
anyhoooo
thx for takin me along ..
stay safe an keep fishin 👋🤓
We had a lot of snow here over the winter too and I think it put the hurt on the bass populations at a lot of the smaller lake type of spots I fish. There were lots of reports of winterkill up here in both states I fish in. I saw that one that jumped way out in front of my lure when it happened. From the size of it I figured it was probably a carp but that was right about where I hooked into that first bass.
I'm so glad to see I'm not the only one that can be fishing alone and still get tangled up with other poles .
When that fish jumped around 9:00 you sounded like the shark from Nemo 😂
The back cast where you hit your other rod made me realize that you are actually human and have the same issues I encounter when fishing!
Your fails make me feel better about my failures. Great content.
Oh Wow,
What a B-E-A-utiful lake. I'd have a hard time getting anything done in such a nice looking area, i'd be too interested in all the nature and critters to notice.
😄👍
Love your videos man your fishing is so satisfying to watch
I can’t believe “here fishy fishy” actually worked for you 😂
I always enjoy your weekly uploads. I’m not much of a conventional fisherman. I fish big swim baits 99% of the time but your content is incredible. It’s also nice to see you have some days struggling to land fish like the rest of us.
Know what I like about this channel? - NO IRRITATING MUSIC BED. And Bob Ross commentary.
Seeing the wake coming for my lure is one of the best things in life.
That tangle made me laugh so hard😅 that is fishing in a nut shell some days 😂
It's nice to see a fisherman actually fight the fish instead of just haul ass reeling the fish in dragging it on top of the water like I see a lot of videos do.
Love your content keep it up 👍 your vids for the most part a pretty relaxing to watch
Your so good at your bait caster, such an amazing video to watch. Honest question do you ever birds nest the reel?? Keep making these videos man I love watching!!!!!
I get a tangled mess every now and then, usually when I hit something on my backswing.
