Oh, what a fascinating painting and a very deep rabbithole leads me to! I love Sargent and still carry upset and ager about the ""Grand Art Theft in Boston". 2 of my grams 3 brothers went "to fight at the front" as it was called back then. 1 did not return. Their father, my great-grand father was an enlisted ranking officer in the Kaiser's cavalery. He could not cope with the armistice, the fall of "his" empire and the disolution of his military corp and his rank resp. He lost his last battle 5 years after the "Great War to end all Wars".
PTSD, depression and shame were the stronger and he committed suicide.
I had NO udea that this short clip and the plain view would stir up so many memories. I met the last surviving of her brothers and he was remarkable.
