Is just me or are both of them BIG bodied? Two absolute units. Mulie looked bigger to me. There isn't a deer in my state (SC) that wouldn't get smoked by those monsters.
I do think Intermountain West deer tend to be bigger - maybe more wide open areas, deeper snow, and colder winters makes a bigger body more advantageous (?) But the leaves are off the trees too - it's probably gotten colder in Wyoming by then than it gets in the dead of winter in SC and they do look a lot bigger when they get their thick coats. I once spent a October night in the back of my truck in WY that was -9 or something crazy like that
I have read that whitetail, although smaller, are the more aggressive and where their habitat overlaps, the whitetail will eventually drive the mule deer out.
there is some truth to this but the white tail are more likely to get wiped out by diseases. In SD it mixed areas see greater fluctuation year to year in WT populations compared to mule deer.
Whitetail will take over mule deer habit in time. They are more aggressive than the mule deer. More paranoid. Maybe that's why they have a better chance of survival? I personally don't care to see whitetail in prime mule deer habit. Just my opinion. I live in a unit where it's almost unlimited whitetail for tags,,,, great jerky and snack sticks!
Where I hunt in Central Nebraska around Loop city I first started hunting their 20 years ago. There was mules and Whitetail both the Whitetail have completely run the Mulee’s out of there.
I always wondered how they would react to each other. I did not know they would fight or crossbreed. Interesting clip. Thanks! I'm from Nevada...was hoping the muley would prevail. I'm sure size and age has something to do with it, but I could be wrong.
mule deer are usually bigger so thats probably a surprisingly enormus whitetail i personally like whitetail meat more but muleys have impressive sets of antlers
Both are them are absolute units. Their antlers are shockingly small considering how big their bodies are. The whitetail has a decent rack but I've seen way bigger racks on smaller muledeer.
I live off whitetail and occasionally get gifted moose, elk, pronghorn, and muley. I can not tell any of them apart in a blind taste test and neither can anyone else that's done such a test at my house no matter which one is their primary meat source. My conclusion is that they're all excellent when handled well and they're all disgusting when handled poorly.
@@lasergames1798we have huge bodied whitetails in Maine. The racks sometimes look small because the bodies are so big. That being said our deer are huge, but their racks don't measure up to the Midwestern whitetails.
@@DBMorris I'm out of SC where 98% of our deer are under 175#. I figurer the horns looked a little small due to the huge bodies. Both those bucks could murder ever deer on my place in 30 seconds.
As stated below, the Whitetail has the clear advantage to get inside the Mulies spread. Good clash though. The Mulie hung in there best he could, till he couldn't without risking significant injury when all he really wants to do is procreate.
Around here the mule deer occupy the more open country while the white tail like the brushy more broken terrain. Mule deer have pushed the white tail out in my area.
Do these two species compete for mating rights, or what? I wouldn't think that grazing territory is all that competitive. And do they interbreed? I live in the southeast, so we have only whitetails here.
Depends on what they are eating. I've had muleys where all they ate were grass, alfalfa and potatoes. Tasted better than any whitetail out there. But I've had sage brush muleys and you have to burger them they taste so bad.
Mule deer muscle is stringier than whitetails so the whitetail will always be more tender but when it comes to taste it depends what they eat. A pine forest whitetail will be just as gamey as a sage brush mulie. If both spend a lot of time around farmland they should taste about the same but the whitetail will usually always be more tender meat wise.
Eastern Fresno County, the Sierra Nevada : same situation here. Rarely see deer now. Cannot keep dogs outside at night, the cougars will get them. In the last 8 years wolf population went from 2 to over 70 in 8 packs.
I think Fish and Game departments in historically muley areas should seek to extirpate whitetails from those areas to give mule deer a chance for a resurgence. Muleys just aren't robust enough to hold their own, and we've been seeing that for decades now.
Mule deer and whitetail deer are closely related and can breed, although it is rare. A good article on the subject can be found here: www.themeateater.com/conservation/wildlife-management/how-often-do-whitetail-and-mule-deer-hybridize
I've seen in at least 3 instances, mule deer does living with whitetail. One, the md doe was always near a wt batchelor group, and months from the rut. I've never seen it the other way though, where a wt doe is with md.
That really shouldn't be a surprise. How many videos on youtube show exactly this outcome? It just seems like Whitetails have more fight in them than mulies do.
When I saw the title of this video, I actually thought the end result was going to be the mulie pushing out the whitetail. Whitetail are more aggressive than mulies. I live in the southwest and often see mule deer and whitetail intermixing. You can have hybrids when whitetail bucks breed the mule deer doe.
A white tail buck will kick a mule deer's butt every time. White tail mule deer crosses are almost always from a white tail buck breading with a mule deer doe.
Up here in Montana, whitetail have virtually replaced mule deer they (whitetails) are getting wiped out by CWD, as are elk, moose. Soon, there will be no hunting in Montana.
This among other things is a major reason for the down fall of the mule deer anywhere they are competing with whitetail. For those of us who grew up in the high country west this is sad to watch because the whitetail are not supposed to be out here and yet another example of stupid wildlife management gone wrong as the whitetail was brought out west from the east coast to repopulate the deer population following the Great Depression. Ultimately that decision will be the slow and certain death of the Mule deer where ever they have to compete with whitetail for resources
Whitetail deer are native to most of the western states. There are at least two subspecies of whitetail found nowhere else but the western states. The reason for whitetail deer displacing mule deer in some areas is because of the changes to the landscape modern agriculture has caused. Transforming large swaths of the west from prime mule deer habitat to prime whitetail habitat.

The mule deer are 1/3 larger . Whitetails usually do win in fights with muleys. The white tails range along drainages & creek bottoms. The muleys stay in the high country. Most western hunters hunt the muleys because of bigger bodies. Some hunt the white tails because they are sneaker and more challenging.
Whitetail are encroaching upon mule deer territory and displacing them in the west. Whitetail are far more aggressive. They will also fight with bull elk and will run them off too. There is a good video of a whitetail fighting with a bull elk and winning. It's not good for mule deer. Mulies in Idaho are already suffering with low numbers and it might be from habitat loss.

The anters on a mule are spread out designed to fight other mule deer. The whitetail rack is closer and faces straight out. A mule deer has no chance
Will a muley doe allow a whitetail buck to breed her?
With enough alcohol anything is possible.
Yes
