Tengger held a concert in the United States on September 14, 2001, shortly after the September 11 attacks, during which he dedicated his song "Heaven" to the audience to pay tribute to the victims.
This is a very powerful song to me and always reduces me to tears. I love Tengri.

Tengri performances for the rest of the show is well worth seeing on this show. He came in late part of the show put gave a very good competition. Hua so respected and admired Tengri's technique that he learned a vocal technique from him in which he used in few of his performances. This show really showed a lot of well respected performers with so many versatile styes which many outside of China wouldn't not see.

I heard someone else (I'm so sorry I don't remember their name) comment about this performance that "in his 30s, he sang this for his country; in his 40s, he sang this for his daughter; now, in his 50s, he's singing it for the world." I heard that he changed a few of the lyrics after his daughter died, but I don't know whether that's true.

Teng Ko Erh (AKA Tengri, Tengger) did have a daughter who died in 2010 at 6 years old; she had a congenital condition and Teng Ko Erh spent the last two years of her life out of public view as he helped care for her. Her name was Gajir, which means "earth" (interesting, because his name means "heaven").
In addition to his singing career, he has enjoyed success in films.

It's such a fascinating style to sing in. The catch-and-release effect sounds like a controlled and deliberate recreation of when you get emotionally choked up and your voice gets caught in your throat. And the chorus has such a feeling of anguish and pain. I'd be hard pressed to find another song that was so genuinely evocative to me.

Sorry--just one more comment lol. Tengri (I've heard his name pronounced Ten-gri, but I'm sure that's Westernized a great deal) does a stunning duet with Dimash, called SwanGoose (I haven't been able to find English subtitles for it but I made my dad watch it and he used to be able to read Mandarin, so I know it has to do with their love of their homelands).
Also, I didn't realize there were different types of Mongolian throat singing, but it makes sense, because the gentleman who does the throat singing in SwanGoose is markedly different from those who performed here. In the other performance, it took me a minute to realize he was even making the noise--I guess you could say it's a little more subtle? In any case, all the musicians playing with them in that performance are outstanding. Thanks again xo

Tengri is a highly respected veteran musician from Inner Mongolia. Girl probably referred to his deceased young daughter who died at the tender age of six because of illness. He stayed away from show business for many years after the passing of his daughter. Singers producers tried to convince him to join their shows for years which he finally did in Singer 2018.

I had heard Hua’s version first as he was challenged to rearrange it in The Next in 2017, both versions are so different, I don’t think they can be compared, but both performances are a prowess. Hua’s version went immediately viral right after he performed it and Tengri complimented him about it in The Singer, I hope you would check it, it might need some editing though as it’s from the Next... Tengri's Heaven is definitely one of the greats in Chinese music with Mongolian influences. But another less know Mongolian singer worth checking out is Daiqing Tana, especially when she sings Ongmanibamai or Silent Sky. To me Ongmanibamai is an incredibly emotional and spiritual song that touches the soul with simple lyrics. Granted the word Ongmanibamai is a Buddhist mantra, but the rest of the song also alludes to a spiritual essence without coming off religious. Would love to see you reacting to her song too and spreading the peace this song brings to the soul.

His daughter is the homeland and the heaven for him, not just the exact homeland and heaven from Inner Mongolia. Lots of pain in his chest.

For a demonstration of the type of polyphonic overtone singing the man on the right is using in the intro on TH-cam, see "Anna-Maria Hefele - polyphonic overtone singing. She says it a Tuvan style. You'll see she has videos where she tries to teach it, and she also gave a Ted talk where she shows the spectrum of overtones on a big screen live, and a video of a functional MRI where you can see how her tongue position changes as she runs through the overtones. Besides references to his daughter, the song would seem to be a plea to stop the over-industrialization of his homeland, and as the lyrics say, to let the land return to the way it was.

Josh, thank you for the reaction. You might be surprised to know that Hua Chenyu sang this as a cover a year or two before Tengger sang it here; it partially explains Hua's reaction, as he obviously has a lot of respect for him. I think you will love Hua's interpretation.
One other thing of note; I do know this song was originally about his homeland of Mongolia, which has been rich with strife and chaos. He is singing about how much he loves his land even through the rough times. He changed some of the lyrics later after his daughter died.

How could there be a war?I am Chinese, how come I didn't know there was a war in Inner Mongolia? There has been no war since the liberation of Inner Mongolia, which was more than sixty years ago. It is worth noting that there was no Tengger then!!Mongolia is different from Inner Mongolia. Inner Mongolia is a province of China and Mongolia is a country. China is not as peaceful as Europe or South America.I suppose you read the so-called facts reported by your side of the media, the Western media...ridiculous
。。。可笑

Love your reaction so much, I was so moved by your empathy and sincerity. I had a special feeling for this song since my hometown is Inner Mongolia where Tengeri comes from. I grew up listening to this song. Also, if it possible, want to know your reaction and your professional comment to the song 'Nine girl' (jiu er/九儿)sang by Tan Jing. It is the ending theme of the TV series "Red Sorghum", which is a tragedy about life, war, passion, and pain. There are only four lines in the song, but Tan Jing was able to express the whole story. The song is so overpowering, solemn and stirring.

Glad you finally found Tenger, one of the older generation of great Chinese singers. Actually, he was a rocker, with dozens and dozens of albums to his name. In a later episode he invited his band to perform on the Singer stage with him. This song in particular, though, always makes me cry. It somehow embodies the spiritual connection to the land, which, as Tenger explains in an interview has suffered environmental damage, which efforts are now being made to repair so it is not just that he has been removed from his homeland but there is grief for how the land has suffered. I recommend listening to Swangoose, which he does with Dimash.
