I read Go Ask Alice when I was a teenager. It was impactful, but I do remember wondering if all of it was true.
I never heard of Jays Journal but Go Ask Alice was a big deal. A movie too, I think.

Read that book in the early 80s. My takeaway was that Alice and her friends consumed all the good stuff and left nothing for my generation

When you mentioned the book, It Happened to Nancy, I had a flashback. I just had to go look that up and the story is crazy. No wonder, it gave me such an extreme fear of randomly getting AIDS from rape.
I speak weekly with my bff from kindergarten. Her memory is so poor it's almost as though she fried her brain in LSD at a tender age lol.
Last year, when Eric teased this interview, I did two things: 1. Bought GAA 2. Asked my pal if she remembered this book. SHE DID.
Not prone to swearing, she said 'That book scared the shit out of me!'.
We're old and probably our school had it on the curriculum when it was first released.
Because 'Alice' was dead I didn't really care if she existed. Beatrice scared me off drugs for a lifetime.

I remember reading go ask Alice in the 80s & having to ask my mom what some of the things meant. My mom had no clue what 'my ass was dragging' meant. I was born in 74 when she was barely 18.
I was one who was afraid of taking drugs for most of my youth. Until I was prescribed meds after surgery.
Read it in the 70’s but I remember a scene w/2 guys in bed together.
I read it too in high school, I'm exactly Marc Groubert's age. I was told the girl was Art Linkletter's daughter? Anything to that?
Diane did some acting but committed suicide by 1969 so I don’t think she’s in this movie
I'm not talking about the movie. I'm talking about the actual girl in THE story.
@@kslinaz5668 Unmask Alice discusses the link between Go Ask Alice and Dianne Linkletter. Short version: Dianne's suicide was attributed to LSD (Unmask Alice points out that later reports stated there was no LSD found in her system, but further notes that no one tested her for LSD) and Linkletter, in his grief, became very anti-drug. Sparks had a tenuous professional relationship with Linkletter and secured his blessing to promote Go Ask Alice, but the book was not about Dianne directly. It's a bit more convoluted than that, but Unmask Alice explains it more thoroughly.
It's in the UCLA library & in Brian Wilson's vault.
Wow, a blast from the past! I read Alice when I was 13 and thought it a bore. Was reading Castaneda and Tom Wolfe around that time, too, so Alice's adventures seemed very tame.

Starting the podcast with some background for the illiterate amongst us would have been nice. I’m 30 minutes in and have no idea what exactly we’re talking about or even why it’s a topic worth discussing. Kind of annoying, tbh.

Without lives. It essentially was a book designed to caution kids on drugs. Yet these dolts make an issue of it.
This is an issue with Eric. He's a good interviewer and I enjoy the channel but I wish sometimes he'd spend a few minutes giving us a bit of background.
It wouldn't take much and it would really improve these shows.

I started reading it again after reading it in highschool... I remember reading it in highschool and being skeptical but halfway through as an adult I'm just like this sounds like a really naive take.... Guess it was because it was written by someone who hadn't ever experienced that life. Makes sense. I was doing drugs in highschool was an addict for a couple years. And I just thought this isn't what drugs are like 🫠
That Alice book was horrible i read it . Total wack job . Depressing not a happy read dont waste time . I still took LSD never a bad trip

That unfortunately will get a user taken off of TH-cam. I know of several first hand. That's a truth that many online sources won't even so much as allow discourse on. In some countries it's a prison-able offense and there are literally people in prison for it. Scary stuff
