  • A brief first look at a Poulan PRO 18" chainsaw. Bought this as an upgrade from the Poulan Wild Thing that used to serve as my backup saw. I've been considering purchasing this model for years, having been impressed by the Wild Thing's durability. When I saw it being closed out at Harbor Freight for $160, I just had to bite, having already given away the Wild Thing.
    A follow-up video on chain-tightening, warm restarts, and more. • Chainsaw Tips - Tighte...

    Just an update. The unit is still running fine though it doesn't get much use unless the Husqvarna 351 is stuck or being serviced. This was a closeout deal and is of an earlier revision than the current model.

    Just wanted you to know Husqvarna, took over Poulan about twelve years ago. I bought the same saw in August of 2014. Its a fairly popular homeowner saw. When I took the side cover off to the recoil assembly, it had the Husqvarna "triple crown" on it. If you look a the owner's manual, you will see Husqvarna AB or something equivalent to that. I had the saw for three years. My best friend came to see me. Said he wanted something a little bit bigger than his PP3816 so I sold him my beloved Poulan 4218A. It still runs great, he bucked and limbed three cords of wood this past fall. I keep my saws clean and do regular maintence after each use. I missed it so much I bought the updated PR5020 this July, for bigger girth trees, storm debris to accompany my Husqvarna 340, Sthil MS 251 C and Sthil MS 170. Enjoy your purchase!

      Richard Sullivan that's a disgrace to put a poulan next to a stihl, they shouldn't even be in the bed of a truck together

    • @richardsullivan1776
      @richardsullivan1776 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Jody, Poulan may not be a professional saw, that doesn't mean its a bad saw. I know from personal experience. Is Sthil or Husqvarna a better product, sure. When I started out, that's all I had was Poulan. Good saw for general yard work and storm debris. I seem to cut more and more each year so Sthil or Husqvarna is a better choice. I would strongly recommend Poulan, for people who want a saw for occasional use, camp, keep in the toolbox of a truck for emergency use on country roads or even if they want a to limb and buck two or three cords of wood a year. A bigger Poulan Pro is more than suitable for the task.

    Great practical review...been running a se ond hand wild thing moderately heavy for a few months and happy so I also picked up a second hand pro today. I have good expectations.

    Seems like a great deal! I just bought our first Electric Remington Pole chainsaw a couple months ago and I am surprised the power I get out of a electric chain saw! I guarantee you’ll get great use out of that poulan. Great video sir - Doug Turcott

      Thanks, enjoy the variety of your videos, I originated from SE. MI. ( though more from the westside), so I can relate to a lot of what you cover.
      My brother got an electric chainsaw, corded, works well. But if you want any range out of them, the cords have to be heavy gauge. I need a pole saw too, the surrounding trees have stretched their branches way out to fill the clearing around my house (in Dublin MI.).

    Not the once in a lifetime deal I thought it was. Harbor Freight now has an updated version of the same, for only $10 more, I probably should have waited and used a 20% off coupon on the new model. Some cosmetic differences, not sure if there are any other updates on it.

    But I have a pre mixed 50:1 gas that I got with my chainsaw and I am very very confused. That is all I got. I bought a PoulanPro PR3816 today. Do I just pour it in to one hole? There are silicone "pipes" all throughout the inside where I looked and don't want to screw it up. I know more about lawn mowers. On the manual there is something about bar oil and gas, but I have a 50:1 pre-mixture that I bought with the chainsaw today. So what am I supposed to do? Do I have to buy something else? Do I just use what I have? I need some help. I have all the other answers I need but this one. And yes I know what I'm doing otherwise. I'm a strong independent black woman and I don't need no man, I will never depend on a man again. The only thing is I just have a question if someone could tell me what to do about this gas and oil thing? That's all. Thanks, friends! I gotta cut some trees down! No sense in paying crooks to do what I can do for my mother myself!

      Fuel mix goes into the tank by the handle. It should state near it, 50:1 with a fuel pump and oil drop icon. Bar oil which is needed to lubricate and cool the chain and bar goes into the front tank by the exhaust muffler, which it states Bar Oil or an Oil Drop with chain icon.

    • @HillOrStream
      @HillOrStream  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry I missed this somehow but probably by now you found out you need bar and chain oil too, as the other reply explains. I go over comments in Studio once in a blue moon and always find something I missed somehow, YT can be odd...

      @xamot80 it’s a homeowner grade saw but out of the 6 that I purchased for myself and friends, they’re all doing just fine and start up every time. Surprisingly that’s more than can be said for my friend’s MS170. Im guessing he got a lemon of a Stihl.

    I had a poulan wild thing, best saw I ever owned. Having trouble with my new poulan pro when it gets hot it gives out and a bitch to start

    • @TheKrayusKorianis
      @TheKrayusKorianis 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Adjust your coil. I had the exact same problem with a Poulan PL3816. The coil was rubbing the flywheel and cause it to overheat, which made it not start.

    • @HillOrStream
      @HillOrStream  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A pretty common complaint on chainsaws or other 2 cycle engines with a simple carburetor. The higher-end saws usually don't have or need a primer bulb and seem to handle changing conditions better. Try Krayus's coil suggestion, check the spark plug condition and gap, and the air filter. And you probably know not to prime or choke when it's hot. Avoid idling much. Make sure the saw has normal airflow and that it's not plugged up with chips, fins are clear, etc. Poulan saws are designed with a bit of a cross-current across the air filter to help it stay clearer. If it konks out during a hot idle, avoid the impulse to restart it immediately, do something else for a few minutes, move or arrange wood, adjust the chain, whatever.

    Can u add a 20" bar

    • @HillOrStream
      @HillOrStream  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, I talk about that in the video. It would be quite a load on this small-ish engine if you were actually cutting that wide. I do prefer the extra length just so I don't have to bend down so much. Since it comes with an extra chain, I'll run it stock for now, but maybe buy a 20" bar for it eventually.

      HillOrStream alright thank you, I appreciate the response.

  • @DJThorb
    @DJThorb ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I have one I hardly use because of its issues ..... worst being the chain won't stay tight so it never cuts straight and bogs down a third to half way through the cut .... and that's on soft maple. It sputters like crazy and can be hard to restart ..... basically I consider it a cheap piece of garbage that is only good for emergency use . The patented ''easy tightening" system is trash. I much prefer my Makita even though its ancient. The refurbished Remintington with a similar tightening system is just as bad for running but did keep the chain tight longer. Both are cheap garbage.

    • @HillOrStream
      @HillOrStream  ปีที่แล้ว

      Mine doesn't have the "easy tightening" system, yours must be the newer revision. They are selling this newer revision for a little less money so I'm wondering what they cut back on while adding a couple features (like easy tightening). I'm guessing that the "easy tightening" system probably discourages the frequent taking apart and cleaning that conventional saws require.
