    after watching your monolith vs svs sub comparison video I can see now that the monolith does provide subsonic protection in its THX setting. the big difference is that svs looks to be using a simple second order high pass filter centered at about 18 Hz (about 6 dB per octave reduction) and monolith provides a more complex ledge and smoothing centered at about 25 Hz. i prefer the roll off point and method of the svs, but kudos to monolith for keeping response flat after approaching its excursion limits. this is one benefit of a true sealed sub in that by selection and careful signal processing you can throw gobs of power at them and hit those ultra low frequencies but keep the excursion in check, whereas a ported sub can get itself into all kinds of problems at the ultra low frequencies (especially DIY) if the designer hasn't paid attention to its cone excursion, impedance, and port air velocity.

    It's impressive how little of a dip there is in that 45Hz area that usually causes you so many problems. Also looking at the graphs between this and the dual PB16s there's a SUBSTANTIAL increase above 40Hz as well, making for a remarkably flat room response by comparison. You may sacrifice 4-5db below 30Hz, but gaining 10-15db above 40Hz is a pretty compelling argument, especially when you consider this is a single cabinet!

      Lately, I have been measuring subs on my riser just to the left of my front row seat as that is the best response in my room on the floor.
      I intend on bringing one of the PB16 down from behind my screen and taking measurements on the same day, from the same location, at same volume between both the Monolith M-215 and SVS PB16. That’s the only way to compare two subs as measurements from previous videos could be from a different location and certainly different volumes.

    • @roco9504
      @roco9504 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Peter Otremba from what it seems, there would be pros and cons to both.
      Svs has a great app to help smooth out frequencies and just do adjustments in general, great support/ their Bill of Rights, and aesthetics/ size which is nuts to say considering its massive, though both take up about the same floor space.
      Monolith though has that sheer deep bass where SVS starts rolling off quick (but still it gets deep regardless)
      Both same price, though if bought as a pair you can save $200 through svs..

    • @Youthman
      @Youthman  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Two in a single box is technically considered one subwoofer. The main reason of having multiple subwoofers around your room is they can be used to smooth out the bass response throughout your room

    Hey @youthman. Tell us what you think about Monolith 215. Also, if THX output lower decibels, then can you tell me what is the use of THX. Obviously, if you buy a speaker has 2 15s you want deep bass at loud volume. So my thoughts it is a certain sound quality they are looking for. So if you could let us know what is the real benefit of THX. thanks.

    • @fooschnickens
      @fooschnickens 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It has to do with the THX certification. There's a specific type of response that THX looks for when evaluating equipment, so unless it meets that, they don't get the stamp of approval. So just because it gets louder at lower frequencies, doesn't mean it still meets THX's standards at those volumes. This is Monoprice's way of still playing within the rules to get the shiny badge, but also letting the end-user decide whether they want to abide by THX's standards, or use their own ears. Best of both worlds, really.

    Does this mean that ported (no foam) and extended mode is the best way to use this subwoofer since it will output a higher level of sound? Or why would someone want to use THX with or without the foam insert if they are not getting as loud of a level from the sub below 30Hz.

    • @Youthman

      Youthman sealed should be tighter/quicker bass as the driver now uses the air as a compression spring, down side is you lose SPL, but if you have so much SPL who cares. THX mode to roll off at 30hz is a commercial theatres spec where they are going for tight slam instead of depth

  • @ZebonianJustice
    @ZebonianJustice 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    So the best mode would be sealed extended and just up the gain so it matches the ported extended?

    That THX mode is weird. I bet they tone it down for a technical reason. Perhaps, THX requires a certain level of linearity in performance, so if a speaker exceeds spec, then it has to be EQ'd down. 105 DB at 15 hz. Lol! Thump!

    But how does it sound? Does it tighten up when you seal up the port? I mean, spl is important and all, sound quality should be paramount. You missed the most important part of the comparison the part you put in a SACD or your favorite record and comment on the actual sound coming out of it. Most people that can afford one of these, can also afford two. Spl is, or at least should be, secondary.

      When I see xxxx vs yyyyy, it is usually safe to assume it is a holistic view and no just one single (not very useful) measurement (unless you are the type to compare sizes in the locker room...). If you saw a video called "Lamborghini Aventador vs Ferrari 812 Superfast, and then it was about tire size and nothing else, you might leave wanting.

      Well, except these measurements are for a single location of one given room, and therefore meaningless. Well, meaningless other than for the one thing that the Youthman was trying to show us, and that was simply the different frequency responses one will get by way of those two variables (Ported/Seal & Extended/THX). The results look very predictive, and so hats off to Monoprice for their implementation of these two variables / four tuning options. ...and of course a BIG Thank you to the Youthman!!!

      @@Youthman "Setting the EQ switch to the THX positionto have the subwoofer perform within the THX certified parameters.
      When set to the EXTENDED position, the subwoofer will use your amplifier's equalizer,with the result that the output level will be slightly louder, but with more distortion. " So my question & statement would be along the line of, being that EXTENDED MODE played louder than THX in your graphs, it would be great to run live audio tests with movie clips and see which sounded more dynamic and does the DISTORTION become audible to annoy the listener. And if EXTENDED MODE comes out on top, while pay for THX certification. I know your channel can get to the bottom of this.
