    Start vertical, scale horizontal.

    Thank you for a great content. I was not aware some of nuances which you pointed. In fact when I started watching I was trying to match my project into one of two types, it was not possible. When you told about third one I sighed with relief, it is exactly type of SaaS I am working on. Almost, because I am still limited to country specific laws and standards - although I still believe I can find a way to make it global :)

    Transitioning from a larger, more developed country to smaller, less privileged ones presents contrasting entrepreneurial mindsets. I'm based in a relatively privileged country within the region, but our fragmented nature limits our reach due to a smaller population. We've recognized that we excel at alpha or beta testing but to truly compete on a larger scale, we'd need to expand to countries like Colombia or Mexico. What vision should guide a business constrained by its borders? Great video! Cheers from Costa Rica!

    Vertical SaaS often has lower customer acquisition costs due to targeted solutions for specific industries, but horizontal SaaS can scale massively by serving a broader market. Choose based on your long-term vision and market research.

    Canva started as a school yearbook design software which is a small TAM but see where it is now.

      I forgot about that! Omg you’re right! And, where it is now, is too big to be bought by Adobe for fear that, combined the two companies would be a design monopoly! Who could have guessed?

    Nice video, but I would probably rename Orthogonal to "Role-Vertical" or maybe "Role-based Horizontal" (which acts more like a vertical). Technically a particular role is in the same "business", the business of doing a particular job, so it's practically a vertical. Thanks for making me think about it!

      I ran through 56 names, and Role-based was one of them. It’s more technically correct, but it’s a terrible name. If you want people to actually use a name you have to balance technical correctness (“role-based vertical SaaS that is vertical and also focuses on a particular title at a company”) vs. practicality.

    We are building an orthogonal saas! I'm curious to know more about this term. Ofcourse the term is coined few weeks back but the mindset would be old. Many founders would have built this in past and seeing it succeed. Can we chat more about this?

      What are you building? Curious to know what problem are you solving?

    I started to developp a saas. At first, I though it was a good idea to go horizontal but then, i am getting more and more request from a specific department. So, i am specializing that H saas into more a V saas. Could it be also a O saas? Isn't it the best strategy: Starting as a H saas then go vertical in a specific niche but still having the possibility to go to another niche thanks to the Horizontal development that I did before? In fact, being very flexible.

    Wouldn’t the more obvious choice have been DIAGONAL? Just sayin…

    • @RobWalling
      @RobWalling 26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Diagonal doesn’t make sense from a visual perspective. It sounds good, but it breaks the visual paradigm.
