    In the beginning of the video, Chelsea says She is Using a Panasonic 12-35mm f2.8. Then she draws attention to the chromatic aberration it produces, then she says that if Olympus wants to get part of the market for high quality imaging, they needed to make better lenses, because "glass matters".
    Those comments would only be appropriate had she actually been using an Olympus lens.

    • @TonyAndChelsea
      @TonyAndChelsea  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      cnocbui Yes, many people have brought up that we were using a Panasonic lens. The point is that the Olympus 12-40 f2.8 has similar image quality, neither of which are any where near the Sigma 24-105, Canon/Nikon 24-70s, etc. In the MFT world, if you want a good quality zoom, you need a speedbooster and the Sigma 18-35 f1.8, and that's clumsy and loses autofocus.

    • @cnocbui
      @cnocbui 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Tony Northrup Have you actually tried and tested either the Olympus 12-40mm f2.8 or the 40-150mm f2.8 and are therefore basing that opinion on actual usage and testing or are you looking at those awfully misleading DXO ratings that are biased in favour of sensor size?
      At MTF50 - Lenstip measured the centre resolution of the Sigma at 44 lp/mm at f4 (24mm) while the Olympus 12-40mm f2.8 achieves 78 lp/mm at f2.8 (12mm)
      At the edge, same focal lengths and apertures, the Sigma achieves 30 lp/mm while the Olympus resolves 69 lp/mm
      Lenstip's measurement of chromatic aberration in the Sigma at 24mm f4 is 0.17% while the for the Olympus at 12mm f2.8 it's 0.041%
      The Olympus outperforms the Sigma optically by a very wide margin. The Sigma only seems decent because of the far greater sensor size and pixel pitch it is projecting to. The fall-off in performance of the Sigma towards the corners is pronounced, dropping to only 62% of the centre performance at 24mm f4 while in the corner, the Olympus retains 81.5% of it's performance at 12mm f2.8.

      "In the MFT world, if you want a good quality zoom, you need a speedbooster and the Sigma 18-35 f1.8, and that's clumsy and loses autofocus."
      Is this some kind of joke? You mention the Olympus 12-40 2.8, but then you instantly forget about it when you say that there are no good quality zooms in the system. The Oly 12-40 2.8 is insanely sharp, blowing Canon, Nikon, and Sigma lenses with similar focal ranges out of the water, while being smaller and lighter.

    • @laurencegr9978
      @laurencegr9978 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Logically, that statement is not incorrect. She clearly stated that the lens is Panasonic while comparing it to the Sigma.
      "...they're gonna need better lenses, too. Glass matters."
      It's not a negative remark at all.

    So Tony concludes with "Best still camera in the world" (outside of medium format monsters), and a bunch of people in comments brush it off with "its a gimmick". For 1100$ you get a light camera for travel and general photography, access to a pretty good lineup of lenses for MFT, ability to shoot good video, and the best still shots. I'd say its a pretty good deal, especially if you want a lighter body than standard DSLR.

      It's very good gimmick/feature, and definitely could work for some landscape or architecture work too (the artifacts can probably be fixed on post later). It's something that will be game changer later on (when olympus will hone it to be handholdable , like they have hinted they will in an interview) but right now this is sort of an appetizer of what is to come in the future. I suspect samsung might pick up this "gimmick" (or feature) sooner than Sony will, since they already have a feature for selecting "best smiles" when taking several pictures and then merges into one.
      This very feature might be a real threat to dslrs if it's honed to perfection and put into smartphones.

    1. The P12-35 is sharper at 35 than 12, conversely the 12-40 is sharper at 12, and is auto corrected for chromatic aberration. If you are going to shoot wide-angle with a zoom the 12-40 is the smart choice. Sensational statements like Oly's glass is bad when you aren't even using it really does nothing for the credibility of the review.

  • @kwacou4279
    @kwacou4279 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    "If Olympus really wants a part of the market for high quality imaging they're gonna need to produce better lenses too, glass matters" As you stated, you're not using Olympus glass but if the test is being done with Panasonic glass, the request for better glass should be directed towards Panasonic. Would of loved to have seen the results using Olympus glass. I believe, Olympus bodies apply some corrections when Olympus glass is attached to their bodies, those corrections not being applied to other manufacturers glass.

    • @TonyAndChelsea
      @TonyAndChelsea  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** The point was that the Olympus glass isn't any better (we also have the 12-40 f2.8); you can check DxOMark for sharpness scores. It doesn't really matter who makes it, but someone needs to produce pro-quality zooms for MFT.
      Regarding corrections, I shoot in raw and allow Lightroom to apply corrections, so it's all the same regardless.

    Nice review of both the positive and negatives of the hi-res mode.
    I am curious if you could use adapted lens that could out resolve the sensor to see if it would improve the hi-res mode. I am also wondering what affect the higher end primes - say the Olympus 75mm 1.8 or Panasonic 45mm 1.2 have for hi-res shots.
    For your full review, I am wondering if you could test out both live time and live composite modes, I think it would be interesting to see how it compares to do an in camera light paining or start trail photo vs. doing that post-process.

    nice video, could you also review the grip/battery unit and flash for this setup; as most of us (with big hands, or shooting in portrait orientation) would be using it in this configuration and as this makes it bigger; whether this is a good thing (getting a small camera and adding a grip)- especially price wise.

    Tony, How much does the crop of the sensor impact things? When zoomed out, it looks like the D800 has a little excess on the sides that the E-M5 doesn't have.
    Also, I'd be interested to see mounting a lens to the tripod and switching the camera would impact results.

    As to the weird artifacts on the statute, since it was a static object, they probably resulted from the default in-camera settings which would render a mixture of high contrast/sharpening, Normal to High Gradation (dynamic range control), and/or shadow highlight tonal curve. Next time try dialing down the sharpening to -2 and contrast to -1 or -2 in the selected Picture Mode. Set Gradation in the super control panel to "Low" and be sure that the Highlight and Shadow control is set to default (0,0).

    that is pretty cool results, it seems like it could be used for architecture, and according to Olympus the next generation you will be able to do 40mp hand held, so the micro 4/3 could compete with full frame, but still not in low light, i would like to see a company do this technology with full frame, maybe Sony, and I'm looking forward to seeing what you think of the new Canon 5DSr when it comes out

    Thanks for the great videos. Chelsea is making it even better! .... This seem to be a game changer. I have always been disappointed with Canon with the real ground breaking technology for the price. Sony, Samsung and now Olympus are showing something real, while Canon is only rehashing their technologies. You really get the feeling they are just withholding stuff for the next model. One top reason for me to want to get the 5Ds/r is for product photography. Landscape photographers can rely on using image stitching to get the ultimate resolution. Not that hard to find a good low distortion prime lens, even vintage Zeiss etc, find the nodal point, and assemble a perfect stitch. But this Olympus may be able to do the trick for product photography at less than 1/3 the price. Not to mention the image stabilization. Imaging how good/useful the Canon 85mm f1.2 can be shot with image stabilization. Do you think Canon will ever put image stabilization on their bodies? Nah...... Oh by the way, Nikon is not that much better either.....

  • @hudwa
    @hudwa 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    About the CA from the Panasonic lens, I believe that Olympus bodies don't support automatic correction of CA, vignetting and distortion like they do for Olympus lenses. Vice versa for Olympus lenses on Panasonic bodies. Also, did you switch OIS off on the lens? It's possible the artifacts were caused by the lens compensating for tiny movements in the tripod in the outdoor, public environment.

    hello mr. Northrup, might be a stupid question I am a digital beginner. As you emphasized the sensitivity in that studio product shoot set up: isn't there something like a wireless remote shutter release available? If not, that would surprise me. I am asking because I like this high res feature (I shoot stills of motionless objects on beaches, in particular shells yet also dead fish, turtles and what else, that got landed). and thank you for your reviews and in particular tutorials, very instructive for a 61year old beginner in digital. Your tempo is not too high :)

    Hey Tony and Chelsea, as for the chromatic aberration problem, have you guys tried shooting the EM5 mk II using Olympus' 12-40mm f2.8 rather than using Panasonic's 12-35mm f2.8? The Panasonic lenses aren't being corrected on Olympus body and can cause lots of chromatic aberration in Olympus body.

      Tony Northrup Thanks for the clarification :). Though I haven't tried the Olympus zoom, I have the Panasonic zoom and I agree that it isn't that much sharper when compared to the kit lenses or the Panasonic 14-140mm.

      Tony Northrup Ee ? Olympus 12-40 is sharper then panasonic. At 12mm and with a disabled distortion correction (which is on a huge side - 8.5%) it produces stellar corner to corner sharpness.

      I was disappointed in your use of the P12-35 as the P7-14, P25, P12-35 all have know chromatic issues with the E-M5. It is unfair that you attribute the CA to the body and not the lens. I would suggest that you reshoot the video using the more appropriate lens.
      It will be interesting when Olympus brings this technology in a hand-held form to the E-M1 mk ii as they said they are working on.

      The Oly 12-40 2.8 is actually VERY sharp Tony. It's pretty much as sharp as some of the good primes like the Oly 45mm 1.8 or the 25mm 1.8
      Even at 2.8, the 12-40 is extremly sharp. And at 4.0 is even better.
      It's in a very different (higher) league than the cheaper zooms like the 12-50, etc.

      They're interchangeable (all part of the MFT system) and have similar optical qualities. We have Panasonic zooms because they have image stabilization built-in and we use it for video. The Prime is an Olympus, the sharpest lens for the system.

    • @CAS3000
      @CAS3000 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Given that Olympus' stabilization happens in the camera body, I'm not sure testing with a Panasonic lens would make too much of a difference in an IBIS test. Even old, manual everything 35mm glass mounted via adapter would make use of the camera's 5 axis stabilization. (Although it's probably already clear, just for clarification's sake all stabilization is turned off during the high res shooting mode as the camera is using that mechanism in reverse to grab its multiple shots. I'm assuming in your follow up post regarding IBIS you were we're talking about other non-high res still use of the camera or for video shooting. Also assuming, as the camera was on a tripod here, all the Panasonic IS was also already off in this example.)
      That said, I DO wish the outdoor portion of the high res test was done paired with an Oly lens just to keep things cleaner and on the chance Olympus is eking a little something extra out of its own hardware as they do with some correction for their own lenses. Would have been nice to see it with the 12-40 2.8 pro or some Oly prime under perfect-ish weather conditions just to see what this high res process could do at its best outside. Would be nice to push it to find the edge of its useful limits (limits that I'm still holding out hope are at least slightly beyond the studio).
      Actually got this camera body just a few days ago, but haven't had a chance to play with this feature yet beyond a couple of quick shots of random junk already on the table in front of it. No tripod, decent light, etc. High res wasn't the primary selling point of the mk II for me, but it's nice to have around. My potential use of the feature would be primarily studio still life/product type things, so the review has still left me pleased with my purchase. Where outdoor high res is concerned I assumed from the start it'd carry the same ghosting type shortcomings that any bracketed multiple exposure composite type thing like HDR would entail.
      Thanks for the video, T&C. Am really looking forward to the more in depth review of the camera. Really enjoy all the work you two do and appreciate you putting it out there.

    Having come from a background in large format cameras, I still wonder why so many cameras make such a big deal about mega pixels.. Having owned both a Mk1 and a Mk2, I have not bothered with the so called 40MP option.. because if you know how to a take a real photo in a JPEG, you will get the quality you need without having to rely on a RAW file and Photoshop.
    Way too many people these days are lost without a computer and yet I am able to produce A0 size prints using the best standard setting on this camera and the results are impressive.. and at a smaller A1 size the results are stunning.. so I would always encourage people to learn how to interpretate light, get a grip with their exposure and save them selves loads of money and time

    I have something for you to test that I haven't seen *anyone* else do:
    Which lenses are the best to use with macro extension tubes? The good old Canon 50mm f1.4 is pretty good with the macro tubes. I get good magnification, likeable bokeh, and a workable distance between lens and subject. But, I only have a handful of lenses (and no Nikon gear). Knowing which lenses are good with macro tubes could be a deal-breaker for those who are torn between two lenses.
    Does that sound like something you might do?

    Maybe you did, But I'd like to see the single 16mp Raw compared to the 40mp super pixel blend. I am quite interested in lens resolving limitations. I'm planning on getting the 50mpx next gen Sony. But wonder if the lenses will even show a difference?

      FilmFactry I should have included that in the video (we will for the full review). The difference is profound, though. It's not just a megapixel increase--each individual pixel can register red, blue, and green spectrums, which is why it produced so much more detail in the orange label than the D810.

    Nice video Tony and Chelsea. Very curious to hear your thoughts on this camera as it represents another step in the maturation of M43. It seems like you guys getting more and more M43 stuff between the GH4, EM10 and the handful of lenses you have. That 75mm f1.8 is one hell of a lens, isn't it?

Not sure if it's too much of works for you, but is it possible for you to do a quick side-by-side comparison of these 2 lens? I am curious how much sharper can the 18-35 go! :D

    Just a suggestion for the full review, use the Olympus app on iOS or Android, and you could use your phone as a shutter release... Very important for the MkII high res mode as the slightest movement could effect the test.

      Jay Soriano We used a 4 second delayed shutter, which is plenty of time for the vibration to disappear.

    • @paristo
      @paristo 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tony Northrup Yes, but you had strap on the camera, and tripod center pole extended, causing problems. The HRS mode requires very sturdy tripod outdoors and no straps in camera. The sensor shift movement is so small that even the slight wind hitting to tripod easily gets it cause blurry shot.
      It needs to be handled outdoors like a technical camera. There is reason why photographers don't use straps in their cameras if they are using tripods, or doing landscape.
      Sure it looks you didn't have wind, but that is just the thing that needs to be taken care in outdoors with that camera. And on many situations you need to set Anti-Shock to 2-4 seconds as if there is people walking near by, the vibrations can be transmitted trough tripod to sensor. It is very delegate technology and requires really good handling. The thing is that the camera placement is the problematic, not the subject motion. Same thing happens with any high resolution camera like Nikon D8xx or Sony A7r or coming Canon etc. Sturdy tripod and remotes, no straps etc etc required to get all out of the sensors.

    you noted the chromatic aberration on the lens, if you were to use an Olympus lens there are profiles built into the camera body that are designed to eliminate chromatic aberration and diffraction with Olympus lenses. It may be worth testing an Olympus lens vs a Panasonic lens especially in the 40MP JPG / 64MP Raw mode

    • @TonyAndChelsea
      @TonyAndChelsea  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      James L Sure, but those profiles are only useful with JPGs, and we shoot raws. Chromatic aberration, sharpness, and other aspects of image quality are pretty consistent between the Panasonic and Olympus lenses. Regardless, CA isn't a huge deal for us--it can generally be fixed in post.

    the panasonic 12-35mm like any m43 lens is depending on in camera lens corrections to get rid off chromatic aberations.
    Buyers should invest in the 12-40 Olympus instead. as it is sharper and does work with the in camera lens corrections.
    I am actually pretty impressed by the technology of the em-5 mk2.
    With faster burst speeds and readout speeds this might actually become a lot more useful in the future.

    • @paristo
      @paristo 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      atyl1972 You will be amazed how uselful that HRS mode is, as you are not limited to studio or macro. You can get very awesome landscape photographs as well. As the HRS isn't limited to ~1 second exposure, your limits are 8 seconds per frame, taking 8 frames. You can easily use just 3 or 4 stops ND filters to achieve same results as using 8 or 10 stops ND filters.
      Reviewers are just too attached to the guideline "Camera needs to be on tripod" that it is meaning you can't photograph anything that is in motion. FALSE!
      Creative mind seems to be needed to reveal the HRS mode usefulness, sad that most reviewers doesn't have that.

  • @janohaluska6117
    @janohaluska6117 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Tips for shooting landscape:
    - for the chromatic abberation - it is usually better with higher F number; 5.6 may be better than 3.5, which was used (note: background was blurred more than Nikon)
    - for the artefacts - (because it appeared in the sculpture) it may be caused by the wind; you should block the wind with your body to help the tripod; maybe also increase shutter timeout should help (you used 4 seconds)
    Could you repeat the test if it helps?

    • @TonyAndChelsea
      @TonyAndChelsea  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jano Haluška I thought about the wind moving the tripod, too, but there are parts of the picture with no artifacts, and we took MANY pictures at that scene and they all had exactly the same artifacts... Wind would have been less consistent.
      We tried to match the f/stop and focal length equivalents, but the cameras have different aspect ratios, and clearly we weren't exact with the DoF.

    You could argue that the D810, or any other camera, could also make super high resolution images by zooming in close, taking a grid of images (giga-pan style), and stitching them together afterwards to make a HUGE file.
    Which is what the Olympus is presumably doing inside the camera. It feels like the reverse of a panorama mode, where it takes a bunch of photos and stitches them together to make a wider picture.
    One important question: does the Olympus generate a RAW file when it's in this mode, or is it just a big JPEG?

    • @TonyAndChelsea
      @TonyAndChelsea  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Richard Dufault Yes, panoramas increase resolution, too, but require even more work. The Olympus isn't making a panorama, it's moving the sensor around in half- and full-pixel increments. It generates a RAW or JPEG.

    Hi T&C, If you have any older non-native lenses; Canon FD or EF, or Nikon's, and their associated adapter, it would be cool to see how the E-M5 II manages 'focus peeking' and stopping-down the older glass. Thanks, looking forward to the complete review, it sure looked cold, yikes...

      @TonyAndChelsea  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jerry Johnson Heya, Jerry. This video addresses that pretty precisely: th-cam.com/video/HhgLN_AO-S4/w-d-xo.html
      Focus peaking works, but it's not very precise... it's better than nothing, though. And old full-frame lenses on 2x crop bodies are remarkably unsharp--so much that I personally didn't enjoy using them. A Sony a7 would give better results.

      @StillFingers 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tony Northrup Thanks for the link, Tony, I've looked at the a7II and am seriously considering it. For now I'm going to play it safe and get a 6D as it will give me what I need for the moment. • @StillFingers
      @StillFingers 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tony Northrup My only gripe with the a7's is no touch screen, one would help so much, the Oly's touch screens just seem very usable...

    • @StillFingers
      @StillFingers 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the link, Tony, touch and a wired remote for me are near mandatory, and the remote needs to be small enough to be used in-mouth with my tongue, so far only Canon has remotes I can actually use comfortably, so for now I'll move to FF with the 6D. If I'm able to use WiFi effectively, then I can move to Canon's M3 and either use touch or WiFi. As for my old glass, I'm just experimenting with the intent of selling most of it in the near future. The older I get with this disability the lazier also, stopping down a lens with these cokebottleglassed eyes and my still fingers isn't much fun. It's become a been-there-done-that PITA kind of thing, not worth my time. It's the macro lenses; FDn 50/100//200, even the bellows that most interest me but with the EF 100L IS I'm a happy camper. Cheers!

    I had to watch this video a few times, just to see that side by side with the D810, I keep feeling like something has to be wrong, because the EM5ll 40mp shot looks so much nicer than the king of resolution D810, and I don't get why there is such a difference, it's only 4mp, is the micro 4/3 lens resolving more mp ? what lens were you using ? or was something wrong with the D810 settings, it just seems like somethings wrong, but i'm not saying the test isn't accurate, it just feels like something must be wrong, anyway, there are allot of outdoor shots that could be taken with the EM5ll in the 40mp mode, that doesn't have anything moving, like rock cliffs, or buildings, I think there are many times that feature could be used, and i am sure some eyes are opening in some other camera companies with this technology, you could have a camera like the Sony A7ll, that could also have this sensor shift technology, it would be amazing, especially in a year or two when the tech has evolved, so the sensor shift is so fast, it can be used hand held, you have to hand it to Olympus for once again coming out with something that shakes up the camera world

    • @TonyAndChelsea
      @TonyAndChelsea  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      GuerillaRadio It's not that sharp. It gets about 9 P-MPix on an E-M1, which is about the same detail as the cheapo Canon and Nikon kit lenses.

    • @1barnet1
      @1barnet1 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Tony Northrup
      These lenses are sharp wide-open across the frame.
      cheapo kit-lenses can reach similar levels of detail on larger sensor Apsc bodies.
      But only when stopped down to F6.3 and up.
      Which in turn leads to more noise if you need the light.
      The 12-35 is also rated at 9 p-mpix. but look at the field map on Dxo. It's less sharp at the wide range of the olympus.
      Being better at just the 35mm setting.

    • @paultaylor5513
      @paultaylor5513 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tony Northrup Only uses DXO to compare lenses/cameras and not his EYES like everyone else. He lives in a matrix like world where he can see flowers and clouds in a stream of green characters running down the screen. The 12-40 is razor sharp and can produce very large prints on m43 bodies.

    • @1barnet1
      @1barnet1 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Paul Taylor
      Well Dxo does bring us the biggest ammount of measurements we can compare across brands.
      So it's still a very good tool to compare systems.
      But with Dxo like tony has said himself about the sensor scores.you should not look at just a number.
      Take a look at the field maps. And those show really good values for a m43 zoom lens.
      Obviously it won't reach fullframe standards and the sigma 18-35 is in it's own class as well. But the 12-40 is by no means a bad lens.

    • @paristo
      @paristo 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      1barnet1 DX0 doesn't give you the real values, they compensate the values based format, twisting the comparison with non-metered ratios. With DXO you can't compare different formats at all, only same format. Their tests vary radically even with same gear.
      Only good way to test gear is to go out, rent it and do comparison by yourself. Sorry. DX0 charts and numbers are just there to sell stuff, not to valuate qualities.

      @TonyAndChelsea  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nick Dsnik The artifacts are the camera's fault, the CA is the lens' fault... but the Panasonic 12-40 has similar image qualities. There's really not a pro-grade standard zoom for the MFT system. Well, there are lenses that are priced at pro levels... but that Olympus 75mm f1.8 (used for the second test) is UNBELIEVABLY sharp!

      Nick Dsnik
      The TruePic VII processor, used both in the E-M1 and now in the E-M5 Mk2, introduced some in-body corrections for Olympus lenses only and apparently also only when shooting JPG. See www.dpreview.com/reviews/olympus-om-d-e-m1. In my personal experience however when shooting RAW and editing with Lightroom, I've been impressed with the lack of CA when using Olympus lenses on my E-M1, in particular the 12-40 and 40-150, whereas I have often had to remove it when using Panasonic lenses on the E-M1, in particular the 20 and 25. Not sure if Panasonic lenses are similarly corrected on Panasonic bodies, but I believe I have read something along those lines. This approach is becoming quite popular it seems, the X-T1 also introduced something called Lens Modulation Optimizer (www.fujifilm.com/products/digital_cameras/x/fujifilm_x_t1/features/page_02.html).
      Chelsea and Tony Northrup, I love your videos and your style, but would you mind commenting on that statement in your video? It doesn't make sense to tell Olympus to up their game because you saw CA when using a Panasonic lens. I assume the point you wanted to make was that "glass matters", especially for such high res shots, but you made it sound as if Olympus yet had to release any good glass. You didn't even use an Olympus lens for this test.

    • @Augownage
      @Augownage 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Tony Northrup What is funny is that the Olympus 12-40 2.8 is 95% as sharp as the 75mm 1.8. If you actually used the lenses instead of trusting DXO's flawed tests, you would see that at f/4, the Olympus 12-40 2.8 is far out-resolving the 16mp sensor. You yourself say that the 75mm 1.8 is "UNBELIEVABLY sharp!", but yet DXO rates it at only 12mp on the E-M1, which your test on the E-M5 II with the Grey Goose has clearly proven is a false value. Why refer to DXO when your own in house testing is proving their results to be so horribly inaccurate?

    A few of these comments are hilarious. First and foremost, it's a 16mp MFT camera, and from the initial reviews I've read/watched, it appears as though it's a damn good one at that, certainly up there with the E-M1 & GH4. They've improved on everything since the first E-M5, most notably build quality and video output.
    Olympus could have quite easily released this camera with these nice (but maybe underwhelming) improvements (like a lot of manufacturers do) and still sold a bucket load of them. Instead, they've chosen to innovate and include a unique feature that under the right conditions allows you take to a 40mp photo relatively quickly and easily from a camera that is probably a third of the size/weight of a DSLR, and yet people still find something to moan about! What did you expect from a $1,100 compact camera with a MFT sensor?
    The fact it has the ability to take photos that rival (and better) those of $3000+ FF cameras is astounding to me. Can't wait for the full review Tony Northrup

      Now what we really need anymore is a tilt-shift objective from Olympus/Panasonic with a 25mm and 50mm focal lengths. That has tilt-shift travel enough to make radical changes. There is one native Arax 50mm f/2 tilt-shift objective but their 25mm is not anymore in sale. Shift is 11mm and tilt is 8° and rotates 360°. But 50mm focal length is little bit long for architecture photography. Sure I would take a 17mm as well but 25mm and 50mm would be enough.

    mr.tony in DXOMARK this E-M5 II camera only got 73 overal score poin,even this camera more lower then my old camera Nikon D7000 got 80 poin in overal sensor quality,so explain me all DXOMARK are true?or real test more relevant?

      YOLO MAN I recommend disregarding the overall score: th-cam.com/video/MRzONYmjH3M/w-d-xo.html
      Check my crop factor videos for information about why the ISO score is lower with smaller sensors.
      And I don't think DxOMark tests the high-res mode...

    So basically it takes 6 photos, internally combines them and viola, you get a 40 MP image.
    Does that mean my 5D Mark II shoots 132 MP images externally [like the Sony A7s shoots 4K externally]?

    • @TonyAndChelsea
      @TonyAndChelsea  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      sjs Yes, if you can manage to move your camera precisely 1/2 pixel up, diagonally, and to the side.

    • @sjs2657g
      @sjs2657g 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tony Northrup As of yet, I find that way too difficult, but my way is to increase the focal length of the lens, and take a double tiered panorama with 2 sets of 3 photos horizontal. My final photo's MP count is just over 100MP.

    • @CAS3000
      @CAS3000 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      It takes and combines 8 photos to create the high res image. Was just correcting the 6 you mentioned. From Olympus' press release:
      'The 40-Megapixel High-Res Shot mode captures eight sequential images, moving the sensor by 0.5-pixel steps between each shot. Then, the E-M5 Mark II compiles those images to produce a super-high resolution shot that rivals those captured with a 40-megapixel full-frame camera.'

  • @dongee6351
    @dongee6351 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Why are you testing a function that merges several images where a background is moving and then be surprised at the blurr? Then run a test with the sort of flash that very few people would have?

  • @jackthehatphoto
    @jackthehatphoto 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    You don't need better glass for the multi-shot feature. The camera takes 8 x 16MP shots and combines them before downsampling them to 40MP... you're not trying to capture 40MP detail through the lens.

    • @TonyAndChelsea
      @TonyAndChelsea  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jack the Hat Photographic You're still capturing 40 megapixels of detail through the lens.

    • @jackthehatphoto
      @jackthehatphoto 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No you're not, at least not all at once. If I walked around the streets and took 100 separate photos on a 16MP camera you would't say that I captured 1600 megapixels through the lens would you? That's why you don't need lenses that are any better quality than normal for the high-res mode on this camera. It's 8 completely separate photographs stitched together.

    • @hankroest6836
      @hankroest6836 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually you're capturing 64MP of detail through the lens in a SINGLE image WITHOUT MOVING THE LENS. Olympus will announce high resolving f1.2 primes starting at Photokina next month.

    • @paristo
      @paristo 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      EverythingTech Welcome to any any studio to do photography and you are there "jumping many hoops" to get your shot. Photography has not changed, it isn't "point'n'shoot" even today. Still many do it so.
      Sure it has gone easier to see results and use the results in last 10 years alone (compare 2005 vs 2015) at consumers but nothing really has changed in photography itself in last 20-30 years when the first spot metering etc came to SLR cameras (like Olympus OM-4 with multi-point metering function).

    • @everything_tech
      @everything_tech 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, like you said. We don't need another pointless solution that reverses the process of taking photos enjoyable. Limited and pointless me thinks :)

    • @paristo
      @paristo 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      EverythingTech The Olympus HRS mode isn't pointless solution. It is normal every day photography world situation where we use tripods, we use flashes, we use all kind extra gear. You need to lug a tripod in many situations if you want to use your 36Mpix 135 format DSLR/DSLM with its maximal potential and avoid motion blur because taking photos handheld for landscape etc. There is no easy way to deliver high quality results every time when dealing with high resolution.

    • @everything_tech
      @everything_tech 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ok, so is it something that you use all the time? Say, something like a 36mpxl camera where you can choose to downsize for space or workflow reasons. I prefer to shoot at the maximum resolution all the time, in very rare situations I will shoot at a lower resolution. With the E-M5 II it's the other way around. I just don't know if I would go through so much trouble and because of that it would be a feature that it's there but not used after the initial excitement is over. Kinda like the 120fps on the iPhone 5S or the 240fps on the iPhone 6. At least thats the way I feel, I don't know about other people?
