    For a person who has never owned a gopro and looking to buying one, the 6 definitely looks better imo

    I don't think that difference between 5 and 6 is worth 200€.

    The picture is far brighter with the Hero 5 than 6.

    Its good and all, but honestly TH-cam kind of limits the quality of video where you cant really see the difference. That being said, when you look at raw footage straight from the camera to your pc; It looks a whole lot better.

    Good comprehensive and honest review! Just as an FYI, if you turn sharpening to low in protune it helps the look of the 240fps. Also in Quik if you go into the clip settings of any individual video clip there's a duplicate button which will copy the clip over. Lastly I might expect some of that purple fringing look to be fixed in software update in the coming weeks. Heard there may be some minor tweaks coming in a small update.

      Thanks Abe! It's always great hearing the comments - because I only have a limited time with the product, so I can't investigate every nuance. I'm learning a lot more about the product through everyone's comments and hopefully the other viewers are as well. Thanks again!

    Hey, I'm using Quik for over a year now and you can split videos easily and then re-arrange to cut between two videos. The cuts are based on the music, and after a couple of edits you know how to mangle it to get a decent result. You can also mix in non-GoPro Video.
    I love it to do preview cuts of something I might want to edit further ... and the time for a Quik video is for me about half an hour ... while doing the same in Premiere takes me 3-4 hours (yes with abetter result) but sometimes you want to share quickly

    • @vistek
      @vistek  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your insights, Frank! I was told that Quik was a new feature, and had never heard about it before. Great that you were able to figure out how to get the most out of the app. Certainly it's baked in transitions are a huge timesaver. It's a great app, and I hope your comments/insights reach our viewers.

    I've just got done filming with the Hero6 and comparing it to the Original Hero HD, Hero3 Black, Hero 3+ Black, Session (H4), Hero4 Silver, Hero5 Session, and the Hero5 Black. I also filmed with the Hero5 Black and Hero6 in the Karma Grip and also with both with the GoPro Color and Flat profiles. Obviously I have a lot of footage and editing to do but hope to have some videos up soon. Looking at what I've got, the Hero6 is clearly in a class by itself. It's soooo good.

      So would you recommend hero6 with karma? or is the karma grip unnecessary anymore, because hero6 has its internal stabilizer? Or would hero5+karma grip do the job?

    all the gopro's had a base ISO of 100 as well, not just the hero 6. It's just that you can choose a minimun ISO in the hero 6, but you couldn't choose that before.

    The right arrangement of exposure compensation, ISO and WB is touchy between Hero 4 and Hero 5. So I expect some of the unexpected color discrepancies you mention at minute thirteen are explained in the combination of these parameters between Hero 5 and Hero 6. I harmonize with Steve Hutchesson who wrote this above "tweaking the gamma in post editing up to 1.3 solves the contrast range so all in all, the Hero 5 black works OK if you massage it slightly" Yes massaging the images can get you there.
    Also I swear the Gopro studio software, when converting the the Cine format, alters the color as well.

    • @vistek
      @vistek  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Tippy. I don't know - but I will say the stability in this video was all done handheld - no external stabilization. So if you didn't find it stable enough, then get the grip. If you found it stable to your liking, then you don't need the grip!

    • @JudoSurfer
      @JudoSurfer 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a Hero5 and Hero6. For the H5 the Karma Grip is a must. For the Hero6, you can get away without the extra stabilizer. The stabilization on the Hero6 is amazing.

    Sad to say I have just bought a Hero 5 Black but I am very pleased with the linear mode for 2.7k and 1080. Stabilisation is so so but I aim to get a wearable gimbal. A polarising filter improved the "white out" effect in very bright sunlight and tweaking the gamma in post editing up to 1.3 solves the contrast range so all in all, the Hero 5 black works OK if you massage it slightly. 4k looks great but the file size kills it for posting on the internet as many don't have the bandwidth to watch it. Thanks for the revue, useful and informative.

    I agree with you, on every point actually. The 240fps could be better, but GoPro really did have to move away from being limited to cropped 720p at 240fps. I think GoPro is finally moving forward, and taking the right steps.

    • @dream.machine
      @dream.machine 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're welcome! They really are! If GoPro keeps the 2x increments per year, by 2019, we could see up to 1000fps video! The 1000fps video would most likely be aliased, but that is still really good! We could even see 1080p at 480fps as early as just next year, with better 1080p240 and stabilization. I do wish the microphones were a bit better on this camera as well, but for a camera this cool, it's ok with me.

Also, was there purple fringing in the same spots on the Hero5 or just the Hero6? I have never noticed it on the 5. Thanks, again!

    • @vistek
      @vistek  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Rory, Thanks for your comment! I did shoot the same shots on the 5 - but didn't bother posting because from my position the photos looked pretty much identical (in the RAW). So it seemed like it would add unnecessary length to the video when I can just say "Hero 5 photos looked the same."

    • @rorydowdell6392
      @rorydowdell6392 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Vistek | Your Visual Imaging Experts Thanks for clarifying. That's weird. I've never noticed the purple fringing on the 5 and thought it handled scenes like sunsets better than the clips you showed. We'll see how the 6 does, but so far it doesn't seem like the smash hit that GoPro needs.

      @vistek  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi CK - I think I did them both in 1080p for when I'm walking and talking. I wanted them to both be stable and the same resolution. The bike stuff was shot in a tonne of random frame rates and resolutions. If there was no caption then the shots were Hero 6, but I didn't bother mentioning frame rates. I didn't want to unnecessarily over-caption the video.

    Very interesting test, especially the parts where facing the sun. In some resolutions, my Hero5 Black fails badly and blows out the whole image.
    Could you please tell us about the HEVC and the Gopro app? gopro.com/help/articles/block/hevc
    If we record in HEVC, there will be no live preview in the gopro app - even on most recents smartphones?
    I'm already unsure whether my Galaxy Note 4 would handle the H265 files but if I were to get a Note 8 and still be unable to get a live preview in HEVC, that would be a bit of a drawback.

    Vistek - Great job on this video! It has all the topics I was looking for explained thoroughly. My largest question would be how does the H6 handle on dusk-night adventures? Such as hikes, bicycling, and motorcycle riding? How does the different ISO limits hold up n those kind of low light, high action/input scenarios?

    • @vistek
      @vistek  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks John! I was quite impressed with it's dusk performance (as you can see in the video during the high ISO test section). I would probably stick to 24/30fps though. You're likely going to to lose dynamic range at higher FPS, and of course the ISO will bump up because it will need much more light to gain exposure.

    Thanks for your most informative and honest review, I am intrigued by the GP Hero 6 - I have a 4 black and am disappointed in the 1080 at 120fps for the same reasons you mentioned now in the 6...ugly aliasing especially when the light is not great. The 3 black and 4 black both seem to be optimum at 1080 x 60fps... and the push to higher was overdriving the capabilities...where does the Hero 6 sit in your opinion...Can we make the call that the video 1080 at 120fps is optimum or equal to the quality of the 60fps on the earlier GoPros? Would love to hear your thoughts..thanks. :-)

    • @vistek
      @vistek  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jolious, I'll be honest, I have limited experience with GoPros. I used the 3s and 4s when I worked in television for in car stuff, and always found them annoying. It wasn't until the 5 (and the review I did) that I actually spent enough time with one. So, i dunno - maybe I'm too easily impressed with the 6. I really think it's a big leap - especially with stability. I quite liked the 120fps quality. I'm sure if you pixel peep, there is probably some artifacts there, or if you did it in low light - but in 99% of situations I personally think it's great.

    I'm deciding on getting a GoPro but i don't know if i should get the HERO 5 or 6; this video definitely helped a lot. I'm basically using it for marching band, just recording myself on the drum set, and casual videos like family trips. I don't know if it's worth it to spend the 100 for the HERO 6 but I'm tempted too because the audio and the stabilization is better and i feel like that would help with what i using the GoPro for. What do you think is better for me?

    • @vistek
      @vistek  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Chitchard - I think that depends on how much vibration your marching and drumming is going to cause. You might benefit greatly from the new stability. If the camera is not attached to you, but just a tripod - then perhaps the new features aren't nearly as important.

    Seems Hero 6 has an enormous annoyng stability software issue. When you try to keep the holding steady it's extremely good, but once you pan, slide or you make slow movements image twiches violently. What do you think?

    • @vistek
      @vistek  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Matteo - I never experienced any of those issue, except I may have noticed the pan glitch a couple times. I think there is something happening there - but it only seemed to happen in isolated moments. I found that I could mostly pan without it happening. There are several shots in the video of controlled pans without the issue. I think it requires more testing to see what brings out this effect. Thanks for your comment/question!

    This is a great review! Would love your opinion ... do I buy the hero 6 sometime soon or do i wait and see how Sony responds to their competition? (clearly the little RXO is going to be killing go pro anytime soon). Do you think a new FDRX 4000 or something along that line will be coming out in 2018?

    • @vistek
      @vistek  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The RXO is a very different product with a different market, but interesting none the less. I can't answer your question - because it would require speculation, which I'm not in the business of doing. Chasing technology is a tough thing. I always believe that you should buy the thing you need now. Hope that helps! -D

    funny cuz i just bought the hero 5 black mainly cuz i couldnt afford the 6. but now im considering taking it back and paying the balance to get the newest one. Seems like its got a nice look to it, but then again i dont really focus on 4k. my edit software doesnt really do good in 4k and ontop of that i dont have the best internet so uploading 4k video would take along time. maybe just the 5 is fine.

    Thanks for all the good info. I almost bought a Hero 5 until they released the 6 model. I watched some videos like yours for quick research to save time answering personal questions. I am buying within two days, thanks. I still have concerns of water intrusions into the lens cap and side cover when using the camera bare, (without the super suit). Other people have reported water leakage in still water, (in home fish tanks, etc...), with the Hero 5. I will be surfing, scuba diving for lobster and spearfishing. The good action is 30 ft deep or less and at the surface, (so to speak), with surfing. With all the other improvements, I will compensate for in the water issues that may come up. I am going 4K on my pc soon and will utilize all the features. I also am a youtuber and will be showing my sports endeavors online. Sincerely, CapnStevo.

    AUDIO QUESTION. Hero5 black had terrible audio and did they work on it? Is it better? Did you record directly in your HERO6 with the ugly Gopro Audio-Adapter, or something different?

    • @vistek
      @vistek  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Pedro. The audio seemed identical to the 5. I did an audio test in my Hero 5 review, so I saw no need to do one for the 6. That said, audio will likely remain marginal on all action cameras. It's just simply a limit of the technology and the end-use. This is why I recorded separate audio during the walk/talk.

    • @PedroHofmann
      @PedroHofmann 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      ohhh dammn. So many problems with gimbals and Hero5. Terrible noise. How did you record the audio? Just totally off the cam with a recorder? I did that, but you have to synch.

    • @vistek
      @vistek  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      All audio not on the walk/talk was off the camera. All audio during the walk/talk was a lav mic into an H4N. So yes, had to sync audio. Not the most difficult thing to do as long as you don't have to sync lots of clips. I recorded everything in the walk/talk in one take - so it was easy for me.

    The only real stabilization is when you use a Gimbal. The only difference I see is more contrast on the hero6 but that's not necessarily always a good thing since shadows are darker. What is more important is accurate color reproduction.

      Yi 4K+ $339.98 Hero6 $499. Hardy half the price for a camera that doesn't have all the features of Hero6. Yi 4K+ requires a waterproof (audio coffin), doesn't have as good color profile or Protune. If you scratch the lens on Yi 4K+ you're screwed. On Hero6 the protective lens comes off easy and is cheap to replace. Hero6 has auto on voice activation, GPS, is waterproof WITHOUT a case, auto cloud updating, responsive and bright rear LCD, RAW and HDR photo, amazing image stability, night photo/ night laps, Selective Spot metering/ light balance, Protune audio and Stereo or Wind Resistance, Protune video and photo with adjustable ISO and shutter, and Quik Story. Yi 4K+ is a good camera but it's not nearly as good as Hero6 and not that much lower in price.

    Why doesn't it shoot 720p at 480fps?

  • @cinepaulis
    @cinepaulis 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    The video mentions that the 6 has some color fringing has nothing to do with blooming, these are 2 totally seperate aspects. Color fringing does occur in the 6 and NOT in the 5 as can be seen in other comparison video's here on TH-cam.
    Also, to my humble eyes it doesn't look like the 6 actually has a higher dynamic range at all. It seems to be no more than just a slightly different tweaking of brightness & contrast or exposure as this video shows in the parking lot scene : the grey cars at the right at 4m21s become almost black with the 6 while the 5 renders these more acurately grey. I don't see any proof of a higher dynamic range...?

    • @cinepaulis
      @cinepaulis 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh by the way color fringing is usually due to optical distortion (lens quality?). So either the hero 5 has the same lens but uses software correction to reduce/eliminate color fringing OR the hero 6 simply has a lens that is of lower optical quality compared to the hero 5. Either way : the problem is not visible in the 5 while it is clearly visible in the 6.....that's not improvement.

    • @vistek
      @vistek  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there, I'm not sure I understand the question. Perhaps you can clarify.

    • @slebleu
      @slebleu 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm saying that where there was a clear difference you went with side by side and where they were both bad you went with quick cuts and edits to confuse the viewer.

    • @vistek
      @vistek  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi S LeBleu, I'm sorry to hear that you felt my editing was done to confuse or mislead the viewer. I had like, a day to edit this. When you have a day you don't have the luxury of a fine-tuned edit. My first question that I ask myself is "is this watchable," and I'll be the first to admit this video straddles the line of that. No edits were done with any narrative attempt to hide information or mislead the viewer. In my opinion there is nothing to hide - it's a $500 GoPro camera, why do I care if one camera looks bad or not? Cutting between the two was done when I felt that what I was talking about merited the comparison, going to one was used when I felt like it wasn't. Every time I go to a single, it's a HERO 6. This is functionally a HERO 6 video. So if you see a single shot filling the frame, it's a HERO 6. I hope this answers your question and clears up any confusion viewers may have. Thank you.

    Thanks for the vid, really informative and gives some great examples of video quality. I wish you had addressed the audio quality as this is where GoPro is a joke. I'm guessing you were using an external mic or at the very least you were not using the Karma Grip. The audio with the GoPro 5 in the Karma Grip is an absolute joke. We have to pay $450 for the Karma Grip in Australia and only to find out the audio is totally flawed when in the Grip. Are you able to address this in another video please, it would be appreciated. I am not about to fork out $280 more for the 6 (price diff between 6 & 5) if the audio is the same in the Karma Grip. Thanks bud.

    • @vistek
      @vistek  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Darren. Really appreciate the comment. I'll be honest with you - there are a couple good reasons I don't address audio. #1 is that save for some radical audio invention - action camera audio will never be good out of camera. Mild improvements, maybe. But "good"... likely never. It's just a matter of how sound capture works, where the camera's microphone is relative to what's driving the sound (voice, etc). It's also a tiny camera that doesn't have the space to fit in proper microphone components, or preamps. At some point the consumer has to understand that there is a significant tradeoff with using tiny cameras. I personally think the audio out of the 5 & 6 is great considering what type of camera it's coming out of. I have noticed a great improvement over older or 1-3rd gen action cameras. The 2nd reason I didn't do an audio test in this video is because I did one in our Hero6 vs Sony X3000 video. The audio in the 5 appears to be identical to the 6 - so, I didn't feel the need to be redundant. As for the Karma grip - I'll be honest, I'm not familiar with it as the other commenters/users are. I'm sure it's a great device - but what makes the 6 so good in my opinion is that it does away with the need for extra stabilizers etc. I never used one on this video - using only the internal stability and hand holding the cameras. I was quite impressed with it - and to just throw the camera in your pocket without any additional gack seems like a pretty big deal to me. I know many people won't agree with me - but grab and go functionality means wide market appeal and I think GoPro is pretty smart this way. I hope I've shed some light on your question, or at the very least ... my rather subjective opinion. - D

    • @vistek

      Sorry, you can't. That's not how slow motion works on any camera. There are some apps like After Effects that can help to fake it, but it's no replacement for shooting at a proper high frame rate.
