What's the audio like? Seems it wasn't so good on the 5, some mtb youtubers like "skills with phil" using older cameras for sound and syncing up later.

Dynamic range is the number one issue I have with Hero 5. I have so many clipping white spots in my mountain biking videos. Great to hear that it's been improved.
He's using the words 'dynamic range' but what he seems to be reacting too and showing is an increase in contrast. However, maybe it indeed has more dynamic range.

just bought one after having the old ones this is just superior , and it should be. Gopro have nailed it with this in my opinion
have you dropped it by accident? I mean really dropped it. is it still waterproof? they can nail it via picture and video but the case lacks compared to the 4 series

I Have had every camera since they came out and been blown away with every new model but I have used the 6 once now and its unreal, a bit different in post though, the waveform is a bit weird, Come to Squamish next year and I will take on a killer ride!

Very good info. I am buying one within a couple days. I have not done much research yet, so you saved me hours of filtering through videos. As I am a water sports enthusiast, (surfing, scuba diving, fishing, boating, etc...), I am still concerned of the inherent water leaking issues of the Hero 5 Black. A lot of the good action is in less than 30 feet deep, such as catching lobster or spear fishing, (watch for my videos of that real soon), or at the surface under a bit of pressure while surfing. I can back it up with the super suit, but it is supposed to be waterproof to 10 meters, (33 ft), but a lot of people reported leaking issues from the lens cover and small cover on the side in 1 foot deep water. I would love to have the better sound recording without the super suit, but I might like the security of no water leaking with it in these specific given situations. Thank you very much for the detailed breakdown of performance, it answered many of the questions I would have probably called GoPro to get the answers before purchasing. I am already sold on it, just wanted to be less nervous of doing it. Sincerely, CapnStevo.

Great review as usual, really liked going through all the changes 1 by 1. Changing the chip in the camera is a huge difference that justifies a new model on its own imo

I'm still somewhat disappointed with GoPro not adding ois but this time digital since to be ok. For what I use my GoPro for I do not think I'm going to upgrade but it's nice to see that they are taking the camera to a next level

I bought same camera yesterday after filming 15 min I realised my camera get too hot it was almost start burning from allover even the lens glass was too hot is this normal? Or should i contact with my seller? Oh also there was one more issue i put 64gb card camera did not give any error but not saving any video instead of saving video it freeze to main screen dont even let me turn it off then i remove the betray and start again. Any advice on these issues will be much appreciated. Thanks
No comment on the audio quality and if it has been improved? Seems like an obvious bullet point considering all the complaints about the Hero5's crappy audio. I'm guessing there's no improvement which is why nothing was mentioned...
Very Good Video about GoPro Hero6 Black Review
Great Review. I had an action camera of another brand. Pretty decent for the price. But nothing beats the Gopro 6 for battery life, decent night photos and videos. The ability to extract good still shots from the video via Quik is a super bonus. But the Quik software can sometimes be a sore. The ability to use screen to zoom and move around in menu is excellent too. Of course my APSC with its lens gives me more control. But the Gopro 6 is a discreet little machine that takes amazing videos and photos.
How do you find all the time to test all this tech and gizmos?
Do you still need the gopro offical microhpone adapter in order to use an external microphone?
I only have an official one, so let me try and find a non-official one to validate (though I suspect the answer will remain the same).
Hi Ray. Did you manage to find an alternate mic adapter to the official GoPro one?
At least with the newer software update versions, the answer is a resounding NO :( This seems to be the GP reasoning.
1. The port was designed to enable various audio signal boost configurations using the amplifier in the external adapter
2. The signals that pass through the port have been assigned by GP, therefore other companies are unable to make the proper interface (i.e. PROPRIETARY)
3. Thus, the GP software turns OFF the menu item for the external port when it does not recognize the official microphone adapter :(
4. So bottom line, without the official GP mic adapter, the audio is routed to the internal 3 microphones - no matter whatever other USB-C to 1/8" (10mm) cable you try.
5. If you think your USB-C to 1/8 inch cable and 1/8 inch microphone seems to be working - SURPRISE ... NOPE, you're only recording from the INTERNAL mics - GP fooled you :(
Great review! some of the new features sound good, I have only had the Hero 5 for 7 months, I am interested in upgrading to a 6, but setting up the 5 cost me big bucks so I only want to upgrade the camera and sell the 5. I regularly use my Hero 5 with the Karma Grip, can you confirm that I will be able to use the 6 with the Karma with no technical problems. Thanks.

I thought for sure that AUDIO would be an area of interest among the 15 things to know , but no such luck . Its baffling to me that review after review seems to be completely avoiding the audio quality or lack thereof as it was such a major issue for so many people with the GoPro Hero 5 . Hey, I just thought I'd mention... The way you say that "in 4k @60fps we can't do linear mode" is a bit misleading. It had me thinking it was possible in 4k @30fps when in fact it is not possible in any 4k mode. Otherwise, appreciated the review! Thx.
I'm kinda on the fence on buying this camera. I'm hearing it gets very hot after a while. Any comments on this would help.

Great video! Was really helpful, especially seeing some of your low light footage, so thanks for showing that. It would be cool if you were able to compare the same scene there with an earlier model as well next time in future videos to really see the improvements in the models.
Also, one thing I really thought was important to point out here though both for you and the viewers is about the WiFi 2.4/5 Ghz that you talked about. It should be noted that 5 Ghz definitely does not mean double the download speeds as you mentioned :)

Thx Sir, for the extensive review & opinion on the GoPro Hero 6 which I have recently became a proud owner of. I had in the past considered purchasing an action CAM because of it size & versatility but very glad to have waited for this one with more future proof features than previous models, I'm so stoked with this camera that I've almost been using it on a daily basis "my very first" ever action cam before was solely recording & photographing with smartphones. I have encountered difficulties with pairing/connecting to GoPro (capture) App installed to my smartphone, it seems to indicate a WiFi connection on the camera but phone says no network connection & my phone suddenly automatically disconnects with WiFi when pairing with Hero 6. Please advise me on what I had done wrong & with regards to question on video recordings seems to not have pause functions, have I over looked such option or non exist? Finally is the micro HDMI the only output to TV monitors? What about lens & screen glass protectors? Cheers!

I'm debating upgrading from my dependable old 3+ Black. I've used it since its inception without any issues. I primarily use it on a motorized gimbal to record vacations and low-key outings (I'm not a scuba diver or skydiver or trick skier by any means) to post to Vimeo and TH-cam, and typically only shoot 2.7k 24-30fps in ProTune mode because my dinosaur of a computer lags trying to post 4k in Premiere Pro. Realistically I will never use the 4k 60fps because I don't need it for my purposes (even when I eventually invest in a new computer). The biggest draw to me about the 6 is the stabilization so I can leave the clunky gimbal at home. I'm also intrigued by the new video and photo formats and overall image capture. And, I love not having to carry a separate viewfinder and all those housings. But ... I'm reading a TON of negative reviews about freeze ups and people getting home and downloading black video after their vacations. I write off some due to user error, but there are too many of these complaints to ignore. Do you have an opinion on that? Would a 'recreational' videographer such as myself be crazy to shell out five hundred bucks for the 6?
Hero 5 had a big noise problem for being too sensitive. Has this been fixed in Hero 6?

2.4ghz to 5ghz isnt related to speed, it's the frequency in the electromagnetic spectrum that it operates on. 2.4 is fine, but there is generally more interference with it (ie lots of other electronics operate on 2.4ghz)
That's not true though. 5Ghz does implicitly indeed allow faster transfers at shorter ranges. Specifically because 5Ghz is supported on other WiFi protocol types at higher data rates (802.11AC). So while there are elements that can be replicated on 2.4Ghz, the additional channels on 5Ghz is really what gets you the other speed. Thus, it's very much true in this case that when you use the toggle option to choose 5Ghz within the GoPro Hero6, that you are in fact increasing the speed.

How about mentioning that unless you have 2017 processor in your PC or MAC or A10 in your ios device you won't be able to play HEVC format videos on it. You know, the format that Hero 6 uses to compress all those nice videos! Or how about the fact that 1.51 version, current one (November 10th 2017 comment) is full of glitches and bugs! Blue tint in low light videos, grainy images (both videos and photos) etc........... THIS IS A RAW PRODUCT!!! GoPro rushed it trying to close Q3 nicely (failed!!! they still lost over 10% per share). Shame on you GoPro! This isn't worth $500 as it is right now.
THE ZOOM IS WORTH IT FOR ME. DO YOU NEED A SPECIAL MICROPHONE ADAPTER TO USE AN EXTERNAL MIC ?

the frame blending at 01:53 looks horrific (look at the spokes), and youtube's codec doesn't make it better either. don't just simply apply that time interpolation method. the raw footage has to contain the necessary data in order to pull that off or it has to work in your favor (blue sky in the BG e.g.).
You can overlay the GPS data using the desktop GoPro app. It was not working at the moment of introducing GoPro 5, but they added it later.
Of course, but it's horrible compared to the competition. Like comparing a single deformed M&M to a Costco sized bag of perfect M&M's.
It just sounded like gopro cannot do it. I didn't had chance to try different action cameras for this feature, so thanks for info :)
It doesn't do it well (or barely). The lag is horrible too. It can take 5-10 seconds for speed to catch-up, and the editing process is dismal in how you have to deal with adding gauges. :( It's really too bad, given they bought out a company that specialized in it, the resulting functionality in GoPro's native tools is laughably useless.
Where is the video that compares the stabilization of the gopro with sony etc... I cannot find it ?

If I buy the Hero GoPro 6 do you think I still would need a Karma grip? I want to get good smooth stabilization. Is the 6 good enough to not require a Karma Grip?
It depends a bit on what you're using it for. For example, rougher mountain biking I'd probably go with a gimbal. Whereas if you're using it for skiing (depending on terrain), you're more likely to get away without it.

I don't expect this year, it sounds like the focus is largely on the VIRB 360 for the immediate moment.
Wondering why GoPro doesn't allow you to do FB Live or TH-cam Live or IG Live from their app. Would think that would be a great feature and not much work to allow me to sign-in FB on their app - similar to Live4

In general, the GoPro makes a horrible camera for taking non-action photos. Whereas, it makes a great action camera for photos. The difference is that it's a very wide lens (even if in linear/narrow, or zoomed in views), so you're unlikely to get some of the more zoomed in shots you want.
@DC Rainmaker - very helpful and informative video, thanks for digging into some of the gory details. I'm most interested in this because of the 240 fps at 1080p for the slow-motion capabilities. But reading the comments below, I'm concerned that those files might not be compatible with my computer. Can those files be transferred easily to Windows PC and imported into Adobe Premiere Pro?

When you say the low light feature is one of you favorite improvements, do you mean when you turn that feature on or just in general. I understood that the low light mode simple changes your frame rate automatically. Please elaborate on that for a moment if you would. Thanks..
Just in general. The dynamic range improves as well as the low-light performance. Nothing you have to do in terms of settings.

No, unfortunately the Hero4 batteries are different than the Hero5/6 batteries. One thing to keep in mind is that you can get 3rd party Hero 5/6 batteries pretty cheap, it's what I mainly use. Here's exactly what I use within the Hero5/6 cameras: amzn.to/2yhVpTz

what aboute battery life?
I’ve own mine for 6 months now and I’ll confirm that the battery life sucks. Fantastic Camera but my only Gripe is the Battery Life.

that just kept me from even looking at it anymore. thanks. I have a GoPro 4, and the battery sux, so if all they're improving are other features I'll never buy one again. NO battery life = basically useless.

Stabilisation...: the stabilisation on the H6 is software based... any chance that the H5 gets that ‘software update’ for a better stabilisation??? Would be perfect for me 👍
Massimo Saracino Hero5 can't get the stabilization of the Hero6 due to the different processor and build. If you need mounted or hand held stabilization, you might want to sell the Hero5 and get the Hero6. I have both and like the Hero6 much more.
Is this good for recording sick soccer videos
Wifi at 5Ghz has nothing to do with transfer speed it is only the center frequency. There are a lot of factors that are responsible for your wifi speed. There probably was less interference or you got a wide channel at 5 Ghz what resulted in faster transfer speeds. But it is absolutely incorrect to say that wifi at 5ghz is twice the speed then at 2.4ghz...

Everything I shot in this video from the GoPro Hero6 is with ProTune off, with no corrections in post. Straight out of camera.

Avrei preferito che fosse possibile anche un collegamento tramite ANT+ ma vorrei capire quanto il collegamento ad esempio a un Fenix 3 HR (a cui a sua volta siano collegati un misuratore di potenza, uno della cadenza/velocità, ecc.) possa influire sul consumo della batteria e quanta sia in fase di editing la reale precisione della sincronizzazione dei dati acquisiti.

Why doesn't GoPro have an audio meter on the LCD so you know that an external mic is working, instead of finding out you have no audio after the fact :(

so you never answered the questions about the sound issue. with the frame on it muffles the 2 speakers on the camera. you need to drill holes in the frame, or maybe gopro should have addressed this
