A LONG COLD WINTER! The days when Scottish homes were heated by only one fire!

  • Not that long ago, most houses in Scotland were heated by only one small coal fire. This fire heated the main living room, plus heated all the hot water for the house as well!
So, it could be a long, cold winter!
Watch this video to see how we survived...and did it do us any harm?

We also grew up with those rubber hot water bottles. Nowadays it is an electric under blanket. Love your videos. Regards

Nice to see a new video from you Gordon and loved hearing you tell about how you and the older generations stayed warm. The rubber hot water bottles are still available here in the USA. My parents just wrapped an old towel around them. My great Nana Mitchell had a wood stove and in her youth had the coal fireplaces.
All the best for a great new year!

Good to see you again Gordon!
I had a poorly heated, and poorly insulated, house when I lived and worked on a fish hatchery in the mountains of Arizona. The wall heaters kept the house above 45 F in the winter, so my heat was chiefly from the woodstove in the living room. I'd go through five cords of wood each winter. That said, I could build a pretty hot fire and be comfortable in the evening, then throw on an oak log to burn slowly through the night. First chore coming home after work was to haul wood and build the fire, then I'd take my coat off.

Hard work! We have a log burning stove (in addition to the central heating!) and we just love sitting in front of the roaring flames on a cold evening! I get the logs delivered so not much manual work involved! Kind regards, Gordon

I've not lived in Scotland, but I did live with a wonderful lady in a place called Crater Lake Oregon. The place is famous for very deep snow ( averaging 530 inches of snowfall a year). Her cabin had snow piled up to the second story windows, so it was encased in snow. We only burned a fire in the evenings due to costs. I remember there was actual frost on the carpet as I raced to the shower! She had a very special technique for bed warming. She always found something to do every night until 15 minutes after I went to bed. Then she would dash in a steal the heat! She even put her frozen feet in the middle of my back a few times. Love can make a person very tolerant! ;)

@@gordonsscotland8441 lol yeah it took a lot of it to overcome the deep freeze! I actually just had a lovely visit with her last night on her birthday.

My great grandparents lived in a farmhouse, and they were only able to heat their house by one fireplace. And it was wood-burning not cool. So I can imagine how difficult that was and how cold homes had to have been. They had another one in the bedroom that they would light at night and the kids would all sleep together in that one bedroom. I am so grateful for central air and heat.

      Yup, Monisa, so am I.
But it is interesting that having our houses cooler did not, it appears, radically affect our health. I still like it a bit warmer, however! Kind regards, Gordon

I used to see my breath in the mornings before getting up and the heat went on. I didn’t know the difference but I was spoiled compared to your folks and family Gordon!😂 In the old days of Castle dwelling they used coal bed warmers!

It's interesting, Michele, life's all relative isn't it! What we think is fairly normal, other people can find appalling! As I said in the video our grandparents house was a lot colder than ours, yet never seemed to bother them! Kind regards, Gordon
