    Students are preparing for Hong Kong’s annual university entrance exams, which are set to begin on April 22, 2022. The Diploma of Secondary Education (DSE) exams are among the most important tests for students in the city, since their results determine eligibility to attend tertiary institutions. The Post spoke with one student about her experiences preparing for the tests, as well as a local leadership institute on how it is helping students studying in less-than-ideal conditions amid a wave of coronavirus infections.

      I’ll take that exam in June-July as well, haha🥲(Egypt)
      When I’m tired and feel like giving up I remind myself that I’m quite blessed that I can take proper education in the first place.
      It kinda motivates me to do my best. Maybe if everyone in the society including me work hard, we’ll be able to help those who can’t go to schools.

    I’m one of the students sitting for DSE this year, and truth to be told yes, the stress is up the roof. The libraries closed down, the school too and so most of the learning was done at home. It was really stressful because the change became overwhelming, there were a lot of distractions, lots of “I dont know what I’m doing anymore” and so, the motivation really died down for the most of us. It became harder and scarier to study.
    So, for all DSE candidates, don’t beat yourself too much of you get a low mark. You did your best, and there will always be a 2nd chance. We can do this!

    The level of high school should be so that everybody who graduates high school, can enrol in university without entrance exams. I live in a country where there are only entrance exams for medicine studies. Everybody else who graduated high school gets a fair chance. The Asian entrance exams are ridiculously hard for no reason, the American SAT is racist and outdated. Just no exam is the best.

    • @armathillo1298
      @armathillo1298 2 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      I agree that, ideally, you shouldn’t be required to pass an entrance exam to get into an university. However, getting rid of the exam won’t be easy. Usually, there are just too many participants and not enough seats for them. The universities are forced to make the test hard and competitive.

    • @jakayun4035

      @@armathillo1298 Extremely competitive uni examinations, imo, isn’t the biggest problem, but the social aspect, how family and relatives of the student show their support, and what the student thinks about themselves as well.
      Sadly, many (if not most) Asian parents look at the test to judge their children, compare to other kids and be ashamed if it’s even just average, or fair, which, in many cases, amplifies the stress their children have to go through. As an Asian, I specifically hate the pride culture in cases where a family member needs help but the rest of the family chooses to care about what outsiders think, which may make the problem that member is facing even worse.
      I’m happy to have my Asian parents not stressing me at all on these tests but allowing me to choose what I wanna do.

    One thing I realized is not mentioned is the boundaries.
    The exam board is limited on what they can do about students who have to live and study in poor conditions what the said board can do is make sure that each individual has approximately the same chance of achieving high. Preparing housing for 20 people even though over 30k people may need it is mostly useless however grading the tests based on the families social class and availability is something that can assist everybody more equally.
    Although I am not knowledgeable regarding the education system in Hong Kong, them avoiding to mention it seems like the practice is not yet placed.

      unsure if this is about the student’s chinese or the woman’s english, but usually professionals that speak english in Hong Kong have a bit of a British accent (leftover from our colonial days). there’s also a lot of emphasis on “proper pronunciation” - lots of people pay money to get rid of their Hong Kong accent. There’s a recent poem from Eric Yip about how he was taught proper pronunciation before immigrating that comes to mind.
      if you were referring to the student - mandarin/putonghua is the Chinese dialect most common in China, but in Hong Kong most people speak the dialect Cantonese :) putonghua has 4 tones, while Cantonese has 6, and pretty much every word is pronounced differently, to the point two people who speak different dialects can’t understand each other

Yes, hard work pays off but what’s the point of dragging you too much to the level that affects you mentally and physically. Study moderately and smartly. Go out to the world and have experience. Trust me this cycle of exams won’t end. After high school, there is another scam called university. Just find happiness. That’s it. ❤

    some people in these comments are so annoying lol. Anyways DSE/Gao Kao/Suneung/etc. are way way way way way harder than any western entrance exam especially in the states. we don't rlly have one lol. also those students are truly intelligent to survive that especially in China and still do well. It's really hard. In the states, we are more privileged and America is a self-driven society. When you become an adult, you would have to pave your own path and learn many things on your own in order to survive, while East Asian students have to do that early on which is incredibly unfair.

    • @xinlinliu8631
      @xinlinliu8631 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      also some people lack awareness, the west is also hard to become rich in and so many things are self-driven without guardrails which can make many unmotivated but East Asia has too many guardrails so to speak for young students and then it just all collapses on them if they don't do well. It's so sad because so many people are not privileged in Asia.
