In the day of Suneung, which comes every November, silence falls over Korea. Suneung is an eight-hour marathon of back-to-back exams which students spend literally their whole lives in preparation for this exam. We met with Jihun, a high school senior who is preparing for the "most important exam in Korea".

He was told that this is the single most important moment of his youth and the education and social systems have made it such that his mind is almost completely preoccupied with studying for THIS exam, not for subjects that interest him and that eventually play a role in the career he chooses. He says he'll decide what to do with his life AFTER he gets approved for a number of universities. Instead of guidance early on about the employment possibilities he has in alignment with what he likes, he's made to decide everything in a short span of time without a clear idea of what he can choose from and what each career is like in practice. A comfortable life? Maybe he will have material solace, but can that truly fill a shell that has been devoid of friendship and happiness and has instead been wrapped up in stress, 12+ hours of work and a work environment that isn't remotely close to some of the things he enjoys? I'm not saying that work should be all fun and games, but it should be something that is at least partly pleasant and/or sound with your heart.
Chilling Chill you mean stressful life in one of big corporations working there 8h + extra to show that you are “worth working there” + travel time. If this is comfortable life I want eat instant ramen all my life being free, not a slave

Depends, If you want to have your own company or want to be a freelancer, I highly encourage others to stop after high school or college and pursue your dream. It's very hard to start a company in Korea from scratch, since at a young age you won't get any if not, no investors. In this day and age there are so many online courses where you can learn specific skills that you're interested in to help you get on your way to financial freedom, unfortunately it isn't that easy in Korea because of the set system.

I go to the high rank university in Seoul.
It was an earnest dream when I was a high school student, but after entering the school, I wonder if it was worth it.
I don't know anything but studying that everyone else does, and I don't have a dream anymore.
For Korean high school students, their dream is college.
All Koreans know that the Korean education system is wrong, but it hasn't changed in decades, and probably won't change in decades.

Damnnn u still have to attend an academy 🤧 that wasn't healthy anymore. I go to one of the best universities in the Philippines (University of the Philippines) hahaha I passed the entrance exams without studying (only 14% of passing rate during my batch. About a hundred thousand took the exams only 14k passed) 😂 guess u can call it a miracle. If it's meant for u, you'll get it. Don't study hard, study smart 😉 mental health comes first

If I caricature, the education presented here is more like mechanical training than a pedagogical practice. I find it very difficult to imagine this context of competition. I am a teacher, a mother, and I am surprised by this constant pressure. And the ravages it seems to cause.

Its sad because we are told to live your youth. It's already shown in S. Korea and many other countries of how they consider many of you "old" once you become 30. That's a really short span of time to how much you study, get a good degree and job too.

This is torture, when i was in high school every day after i get back from school i be completely exhausted and go straight to bed. I can't fathom the idea of studying for 8 hours after school that is insane and is no different than torture tbh.
Im not from korea but my country (im asian) has a similar exam to this, and the pressure to score this exam is so much that if you dont get straight A's on the exam your future is pretty well jeopardised , so i had a similar routine to these students as in studying and going to academy after school. it was really tiring. Plus not having enough sleep as i attended boarding school, meaning waking up at 4:30 in the morning and sleeping at 1:00 A.M

I don't think its that tough cause I study for 5 hours a day (I am in 9th grade preparing for an exam in 4 years), I used to get exhausted as well but if you take it slowly, like 30 min in day 1, next 1 HR, next 2 hrs etc etc, I think mostly everyone will be able to make it and some people might even fall in love with studying (I do)

I can’t even imagine how stressful it must be to be a student in Korea.
It must be especially tough on students who may have special needs or some kind of learning difficulty.
This literally reminds me of my high school days back in South Korea. I spent more than 8-9 hours per day only to study.
Finally, I was able to enter the top university in South Korea. But, as soon as I started my day in the university, I had to walk into another chapter of competitions inside and outside of the campus. I hope we can focus on our values more than becoming a winner in competitions and try to be original not to be perfect or better than others. I hope people can cherish many different paths of lives as normal.

The top unis worldwide are in the west, no one needs to study an additional 8 hours a day on top of school to succeed here.
@Inw TH-cam yea that might be true if you ignore all of the actual causes. Bringing up race as the only cause of educational attainment is wrong. Just in America, both Cubans and Nigerians are extremely successful compared to base white, Nigerian-Americans have a higher grad lvl educational attainment than Asian Americans at 20%.

This is just my perception of Koreaboos based on what I see on the internet, but aren’t most Koreaboos simple preteens/teens who develop a fetish for Koreans and have a false perception that everything in South Korea is 100% perfect? we are graded relatively, so in short you need to get a grade thats within the top4% range or above in every subject to get into the top collages

I am not sure he is seriously taking suneung maybe he is 수시(susi), because I and most of my friends studied 14 hours a day during a senior year and did not have luxury like doing interviews.

You know what, I studied hard and entranced top4% university in Korea but after losing my fingers in military, I cannot get any job, part time. So funny! I had to go military for 2 years by force but government only gave me $1000 for my lost fingers haha. This is Korea! Now I hope to have a brave to kill myself.
I am a Filipina married to a Korean man since 2011. We moved to Korea in 2015 when our eldest child was only 2 years old. He is in the 3rd grade now. I promised myself that even though my son is studying in Korea right now, I will not allow myself to be one of those Korean parents who put too much pressure on the kids to do well so they can go to prestigious universities. The suicide rate among kids who suffer from depression because of Korea's education system is really high. As a mom, it breaks my heart to see children study until 1am then wake up around 5am to study again. My husband and I own an English academy in Busan. I feel sorry for middle schoolers who come to class exhausted. They couldn't focus on the lesson anymore. These kids need a break!

It’s more stressful to have these tests in seperate days, believe me. I live in Turkey and we have this kind of “seperate classes, seperate days” tests so we ended up taking 3 to 5 tests in 2 weeks. It sucks.

To be frank, Koreans are taught to respect the elders, in fact they got a age based hierarchy of respect outside of the corporate based ones
Even if it was based on hierarchy,; it's obvious to see that his parents give him so much love that he wants to give it back.
I don't get it. Making breakfast (feeding) your unemployed kid and driving your kid to school (if possible) is the basic responsibility for parents, where I live. Everyone who has failed at doing this has failed at parenting. It should be appreciated by the kids, of course, but if the parent's are not ready to go that far, they aren't qualified to be parents at all.

Lots of people commit suicide because of the crappy education system their country holds. Finland doesn’t give their kids homework, yet they have one of the highest academic ability rates in the world. This test is not about how knowledgeable or intelligent you are, but testing the memory and endurance of your mind, and how well you fit into society and the korean education system.

@@onemanenclave Not all of America. I had a learning disability so I had to study for hours, using assisting websites, flashcards, re-reading over and over right up until the minute we took our test. I would be crying as i'm answering questions during my midterms and finals. I always walked into those big test with a tissue because it stresses me out so much. Even with a learning disability and being in special classes I ended up with all A's and a 4.2 GPA. There are hard working people out there that care :(

I feel bad for anyone who has mental illness and has to endure that. Especially those with ADD/ADHD.
In Korea I can assume a lot of kids actually go undiagnosed and not medicated for their entire lives
I live in turkey and here we also have to take an exam to determine which highschool we go to in 8th grade. Bruh i am an abnormally short homosexual with adhd and anxiety problems. The schools with lower scores are usually filled with ignorant and probably homophobic people so i knew that the course of my life depended on this exam. I basically had to fricking bust my ass in 8th grade to get into a good school so much so that i became clinically depressed, IN 8TH GRADE
Yes I have ADD and I’m pretty sure in South Korea they don’t do out of room testing.For kids like me I would get super distracted especially sitting there from 8 am to like 5pm.J couldn’t stand it.

Sad that these things are taken seriously in only the western world, and not places like Asia, like Korea, India and all.
I have many examples from India (where I live) where nobody considered these and even depression to be serious, and people suffered or commited suicide

Regular Sin yeah as a Chinese person, majority of us know that our grades aren’t necessarily bad, it’s just bc of the very intense peer pressure that pushes us to do better than each other .It’s an extremely insane and sometimes toxic environment which I’m glad I got out of by transferring to another school where I’m having a much more enjoyable high school life :’)

As a high school student in Korea, I can definitely say that Korean CSAT(수능 Suneung) and school education system are not for teaching students new things, but for classifying students with grades so that students can enter the college which fits in their grade.
In Korea, you get grade by system below:
Grade 1: ~4% of students from above
Grade 2: ~11%
Grade 3: ~23%
Grade 4: ~40%
Grade 5: ~60%
Grade 6: ~77%
Grade 7: ~89%
Grade 8: ~96%
Grade 9: ~100%
Only students who got Grade 1 or 2 in every subject can enter good colleges in Seoul. And if you get wrong just one question, you can get lower grade, as competition is fierce.
In March, June, September, and November of every year, before Suneung, you have chance to have 'simulation exam', which can allow you to predict your real score in Suneung.
I'm going to participate in Korean CSAT(Suneung) in 2021, and hopefully I want to go to college in 2022. Please cheer up for all Korean high school students!😀

I edited this to clear up misunderstanding. The Grade 1~2 which I mentioned above is average grade. There are 6~7 subjects which you have to study for the exam. They are Korean, math, English, Korean history, two subjects from science/social studies(physics, chemistry, biology, earth science/ethics and ideas, politics and law, economy, world history, geography), and 2nd foreign language(except Korean and English, unnecessary).
The standards vary from university to university. But, I will tell you easy example. I saw a college that selects students who got total grade 3 on Korean and Math, and got total 3 on science subjects. This means you have to get Grade 1/Grade 1, Grade 1/Grade 2, or Grade 2/Grade 1 on your Korean and Math test as well as science subjects. But this is very loose standard, which is mostly used in rolling admission. When it comes to regular decision, you have to consider not only your grades but also your scores... because if you want to go to medical school of Seoul National Uni, you can only get one of the whole questions(45+30+45+20+20+20 questions) wrong.

Jihun's mom preparing his smoothies every morning really hit me... My mom used to make fresh orange juice for me every morning when I was in med school, studying all day during finals... Such a simple gesture, but it really made a difference and helped me go through those weeks of hard work.

In Brazil we have Enem, which looks like Suneung. High school students of all ages can aply, as much as adults who want to try university or just test how much they can score. We get two days for the exams and a total of 180 questions and a redaction, so I think yours are harder then ours.
When I had my first batch of IAL exams, two teachers prayed for me, alongside many other people in my church, as my name is on their prayer list. My house captain at school gave me a can of coffee to cheer for me. My dad drove me to 8/9 of my exams.
Politics aside.. the cheering and the support is so cute and heartwarming, it must be such a big burden

I'm a French teacher in a hagwon in Korea. I have some high school students who just took seuneung. With everything they had to study, they still took French as an additional language studying until 10 pm with me at the hagwon. I'm really impressed by their dedication. They are very hard-working and put so much effort in.
Haha for a lot of Korean students, learning a foreign language is important because it they fail the suneung, they can go abroad to study. The U.S. has a bunch of Korean students that failed suneung

Je suis en deuxième année de Licence de Lettres et je compte faire un master FLE après, d'après toutes les infos récoltées auprès de ma fac, tu as plusieurs possibilités d'enseignement pour le FLE, en effet tu peux enseigner à un public migrants en France par exemple, mais ça reste plus rare, le but du FLE c'est vraiment de te faire partir à l'étranger. Ton prof a cependant raison quand il te dit que tu ne choisis pas où tu vas. Par exemple si tu passes l’agrégation (en plus du FLE) tu seras rattachée à l'éducation nationale française donc c'est eux qui t'envoient. Cependant si tu envoi directement ton CV dans un organisme à l'étranger, c'est eux qui vont t'engager donc là oui tu pourra choisir le pays. Voilà j'espère que mes infos étaient assez claires haha, n'hésites pas à aller fouiner sur internet, je te dis ce dont je me rappelle de mémoire donc mes infos sont à vérifier.

As a parent and wanting the best for my child I would never put my kid to endure the stress of going to school and then tutoring until 1am. That's just not a life. This young man has very understanding parents.
I too believe in putting yourself (parent) as an example and have done that with my daughter. I will never tell her what she should go to college for because she is an individual and she has her own dreams. You can only guide them because at the end of the day it's their life and I rather have my daughter loving the career path she picks than living a depressed and unhappy adult life.

Your thoughts and belief changes within different cultures, not everything can be understood by one another, especially in Korea you'd want your child to get into the best university for them to have a sustainable future.
I absolutely agree my parents are very strict but also they never tell to be a doctor or lawyer that just the stereotype because that's not what they want to be for me example my parents encourages me, my brother and my sister to pursue our dreams and my dream is to become a race car driver but my parents also told me to find a backup plan and my backup plan is to create video games for a living and my family supports me a lot.
Not everything is easy in life and every kid and adult needs to have a life so that they can go out and do fun and exciting things that they see in the world.

Every year for the past 7 years I sat for a Cambridge exam and in 2019 I sat for 7 GCSE exams and CAE, I passed them all. However, the tool it took on me was huge. Too much stress and anxiety, however, I did it and you can do it to. Good luck to everyone and don’t ever doubt yourself 💞

Yess, here we have every subject on another day. I had 9 exams because I choose more subjects, so 9 days for me. It's such a great solution. Not to mention that for all of them I studied a day before 😂😂

I'm a Korean high school graduate and I took the CSAT(수능 Suneung) in November 2019, and I got the best result possible. There is huge pressure here in Korea to do well, and I am glad that I did well and my good score is effecting my life in a very benefitial and positive way because this means I will go to SKY and also have good job opportunities, however the pressure here is insane and I know people that have suffered a lot because of the system here in Korea and I hope the education system here will change, because I also suffered from depression due to the extreme stress and pressure!!! For the students that will take the CSAT(수능 Suneung) in November 2020, Good Luck! 화이팅!

I got a question bro, So lets say you studied so well on the CSAT test and you get a great score, you get to go to a great college and all. but what about the workload? Homework in high competitive colleges/universities are very tough, In any field the homework difficulty is high in highly competitive colleges. Wow. Imagine getting into the most prestigious university & not ending up even liking your job and regretting not focusing on your meaningful relationships in life.
You should try to understand that in Asia, you don't focus on the relationships with your family and parents, you focus on working hard so they are proud of you and can brag out to their friend. Then you have children and do the same. Not saying that it's bad, just different from what we are used to in Europe or America.

I'm Vietnamese and from my perspective, I would say that Asian parents put a lot of pressure on their kids just because they want their children to secure a stable job and raise their own family in the future. This results in many youngsters (including me) graduating without knowing what they really want to do in life.
Right? That line about wasting time with friends was so sad. I understand that various cultures place different amounts of value on relationships, but it is not healthy to withdraw completely from one's support group while undergoing that much stress.
Ok still better than working as a security guard and being broke anyways who tf said that people who spend their time studying all the time are gonna hate their job that is why there are certain courses for college I like phycology so I can study hard and get a scholarship to UCLA and your highschool friends are not always gonna be your friends your whole life you can always build relationships late in life
