Furiosa was great, it felt like a director made it, an actual director. I can't think of anything else to mention, that I've seen, so that's very telling about this years offerings.
I watched the beast three times in cinema, I can’t stop thinking about it. I feel so connected to Gabrielle’s character I’m so glad this movie exists I can see myself rewatching it for comfort in the future which is wild considering what the film is but I can’t explain it, something about it just clicks for me fully and I just want to bathe in it all.
Havent seen many films at all this year, but id say Dune Part 2 is probbaly the best cinema experience I had at least, purely based on spectacle. I saw Kinds of Kindness yesterday and I wasn't sure how I felt about it but I can already feel it growing on me the more I think about it.
The Beast was one of my most anticipated and absolutely came through for me it blew my mind, cannot wait for a rewatch. Felt like I was watching something transcendent in real time. Kinds Of Kindness really worked for me, for some reason I love the desperation and misery - I think it hits on this extreme almost punk rock feeling that we all have deep down but can never really express. Not to the level of interpersonal toxicity in the film lol but just some primal untapped extremity within us. I loved La Chimera (would love your thoughts on that), Challengers, Dune 2, The First Omen, Kingdom Of The Apes. I can't find a way to watch Evil Does Not Exist anywhere but can't wait for that to be available
Hundreds of Beavers might be my movie of the year. I have seen it three times and I continue to be amazed by the ingenuity of the filmmaking and the comedy.
I made a conscious effort not to watch the full trailers for Kinds of Kindness. I'm very happy that I did. I consumed the perfect combination of substances and it was phenomenal. Sidenote: the film was filmed in New Orleans, and that's where I live. So, that particular film was taking place in neighborhoods where I live and work. Talk about a unique experience; that was like a director I loved, making a film for me in particular. Thoroughly enjoyed.
Furiosa is a visual master work! How it didn't do better at the box office I will never know but hopefully it will thrive on 4K. I also thought Chris Hemsworth was a really nuanced villain, fantastic performance.
Great list! I only have a top 3 movies so far this year. 1. Dune Part Two, 2. Hundreds of Beavers, 3. Furiosa. I am hoping to add Megalopolis as a 4th but I will need to see the others on your list that I haven't seen.
My favs so far (in order of preference): Mars Express (French animated neo-noir thriller) - Red rooms (aka. les chambres rouges) - Riddle of fire - Civil war - Dune 2
I'm usually quite unimpressed by big studio franchise movies but I came into 2024 excited by a lot of the ones slated. Furiosa, Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes, Dune Part 2, Inside Out 2 have all proved to be fantastic. Can't wait for Alien Romulus either. The more obscure surprise of the year for me was The Coffee Table which had so much going for it & was one of the most anxiety-inducing movies I've seen in years, but yeah, whereas my favourite films of the year are usually indie dominated, so far the studio franchise movies have delivered the most in 2024.
Because I trust your observations as being based on sensible reasoning (which you express clearly and competently -- thank you!), I will check out the movies you have enjoyed so much.
Your take on films resonates with me almost 100% of the time. It's only because of your recommendation that I will see The Bikriders. The trailer doesn't do Austin Butler any favors. But, I'm a huge fan of Jesse Eisenberg, and his films feel almost constantly misrepresented in their advertising. Keep up the good work. I enjoy your channel.
I haven’t seen an actual 2024 film, so far. The Promised Land? The Beast? Those are 2023 films. The Bikeriders? That took so long to be released, feels like a 2022 movie. God, I miss the 90’s. So many wonderful indie dramas. These past two years have been like an unending drought for me.
Thank you so much for this list, Maggie. My favorite movies so far are All of Us Strangers (is this one from this year?), Challengers, Furiosa, Daddio and Hit Man.
All About the Dawn by Sho Miyake is my favorite so far. The best uplifting film I’ve seen in some time. Miyake has become one of Japan’s top young directors along with the likes of Hamaguchi and Yuya Ishii
I really haven’t disliked anything I’ve seen this year in the theater and I’m still looking forward to a lot of movies that are coming out. I feel like this year as a whole could be the best we’ve had for movies in a while. I guess time will tell.
The Fall Guy blew me away in the sense that I've always said "You wouldn't want to watch an entre movie of explosions" and it was basically a movie about explosions and I loved it. It's also got people talking about making a stunt category at the Oscar's so lets hope that finally becomes a thing!
It’s a little odd thing but my favorite aspect of Furiosa was how integral the History Man was. He opens and closes the story and it’s kinda meta that a character like that exists
Civil war, omen, furiosa, dune 2 are my favorites from the ones I have seen on the big screen this year. I would go so far as saying the recent Omen film is the best in the franchise, even after rewatching all of them.
My favourite movies of the decade so far are Inside Out 2 The Boy & The Heron Belle Sonic The Hedgehog Avatar The Way of Water The Batman Violent Night Spider-Man: No Way Home Across The Spiderverse
My favourite film of the year is Poor Things (which was released here in the UK in January 2024). Second favourite is The Taste of Things, followed by Civil War, Dune 2, and Challengers.
From this year, I've only caught "Dune II" and "Furiosa". Both great, but I think I'm done with sci-fi epics in desert landscapes for a while. I expect my cinema year will also be backloaded, with films that only release theatricall or get physical releases in the 2nd half. I'm particularly looking forward to joining the conversation on "The Beast" and "Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person", and theatrical releases for "The Substance" and "Nosferatu".
You are correct, Dune is like experiencing the bathroom. Some people like the smell of their own shit, and everyone is universally disgusted by the smell of other people's shit.
It’s a shame more people didn’t go see Furiousa. I loved seeing it in imax and thought it was the perfect companion movie to Fury Road. Reminds me of when Blade Runner 2049 came out and bombed box office wise, but was amazing to see on a big screen.
I’d recommend 2 Bollywood films if you want the feel of a summer blockbuster: Kill and Chandu Champion. Also, side note: I hope you review Long Legs when it comes out. Keep up the good work😊
Society Of The Snow was released in 2023. It has it's theater run in late December and released on Netflix in early January. It was also nominated for an Oscar.
Furiosa Dune 2 Kinds of Kindness Challengers Civil War Maxxxine( with slight reserve, need to see again.) Love Lies Bleeding( not all of it works but it went for it.)
I’m still waiting for Late With the Devil to be shown at my country’s theaters because distributors decided to ignore us. If this movie is half as good as people claim and by reading the premise and watching the trailers, it will easily be one my top 5 this year. Cross my fingers:
Hit Man for me. Just a fun film with actors that oozed charisma. A weird feel good film. I’m really curious of your opinion when/if you see Horizon- I was surprised by the pace and how European it was with the way it tells its story.
@@Thomas15 the way the narrative is told. The film takes it's time... while viewing... kind of a detriment, but the more I thought about the film afterwards the more I respected it and started to like what it was doing... but I'm also reserving total judgement until I see Part 2. But it reminded me of some French films I used to view and even some Russian films with regard to the narrative it was telling.
The only films from 2024 that really jump out at me thus far (and that I'm at liberty to discuss) are Bertrand Bonello's "The Beast" and George Miller's "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga."
Furiosa, yay!🎉 I can't believe that this epic movie bombed 😢 Why? Whereas the terrible , boring, having nothing new to say awful cash grab called 'inside out 2 " made a ton of cash So unfair.... Greetings from Poland ❤️🇵🇱
Go see HORIZONS part 1. I know you don't like westerns but this is an intelligent drama that wrestles with moral dilemmas when there are no easy choices.
Made in England (2024) Scorsese's homage to Powell & Pressburger. Beautiful tribute from one filmmaker to his heroes.
Thanks, I hadn't heard of that one; love Scorsese
I was amazed how many of those movies I had seen and yet never heard of P&P.
I had not heard of this one; thank you for the mention. Scorsese has said P&P's "The Red Shoes" is one of his favorite films...and it is so beautiful.
Furiosa was great, it felt like a director made it, an actual director. I can't think of anything else to mention, that I've seen, so that's very telling about this years offerings.
My favorite of the year so far has to be Challengers. It was such a refreshing twist on the love triangle romantic drama.
Forgettable

Hell yeah. Same
it's just ok for me and I'm a huge fan of Luca Guadagnino
I loved Furiosa too, saw it twice.
Yes, Furiosa, yes. Gloriously berserk genre-popcorn wrought with classical cinematic elegance. Easily the best movie of (the first half of) 2024.
I'm literally midway thru the beast and clicked on your notification 😅.
Maggie, i get so many recomendations from these comment on your Best Of videos. Thanks for creating that community some of us crave for ❤

This was released in ‘22??
My favorites so far have been Dune: Part 2, Lisa Frankenstein, I Saw the TV Glow, Furiosa, and Inside Out 2.
I made a conscious effort not to watch the full trailers for Kinds of Kindness. I'm very happy that I did. I consumed the perfect combination of substances and it was phenomenal.

I have really enjoyed: Dune 2, Furiosa, Perfect Days, Late Night With The Devil, and The Fall Guy
Late night with the devil was pretty good, but it felt like a missed opportunity somehow. Like the main concept wasn't leaned into enough.
Yeah it was good but a little unfocused. The undertones of the themes in the movies were a bit too buried.
Snack Shack is an under the radar little gem. Give it a shot
I recommend you watch "Ghostlight" and "La Chimera" if you haven't.
would love to add ''The Taste of Things'' to these amazing movies
“Stripped down” is not something I thought I’d ever hear used to describe Fury Road 😂
I must admit I've fallen in love with you and this channel over the past couple of months!! love your thoughts on things

1. Abigail

Didn't expect much going into Furiosa and thought it was awesome. I had no idea prior that George Miller was such a great director.
I'm usually quite unimpressed by big studio franchise movies but I came into 2024 excited by a lot of the ones slated. Thanks :) I liked Furiosa too but I think if they cast Theron that it would have been much better. The other actress didn't hold up for me personally.
Great vid as always. One of the people I go to when I need inspiration
I want to shout out There’s Still Tomorrow by Paola Cortellesi. Came out 2023 in Italy but 2024 for the rest of the world and I absolutely loved it

I'm waiting to see your review of Longlegs
Challengers, Dune part 2, Furiosa were all great. Hope to check out kinds of kindness soon
If you haven’t seen The Devil’s Bath yet, I definitely recommend it! It’s on Shudder. Had no expectations going into it but was kind of blown away
I really haven’t disliked anything I’ve seen this year in the theater and I’m still looking forward to a lot of movies that are coming out. I feel like this year as a whole could be the best we’ve had for movies in a while. I guess time will tell.
My favorite movie of the year so far, it's Abigail
I would have loved Abigail much more if the movie description wasn't a spoiler (The less I know about a movie before I see it the better)
The Fall Guy blew me away in the sense that I've always said "You wouldn't want to watch an entre movie of explosions" and it was basically a movie about explosions and I loved it.
It's also got people talking about making a stunt category at the Oscar's so lets hope that finally becomes a thing!
Furiosa
Dune 2
Iron Claw
I would also add inside out 2 to the list liked that one a;it more than I thought I did my daughters loved that one
Ghostlight lures you into a deep human level

Man, no Kinds of Kindness? That's my pick for the year thus far.
Loved Furiosa too. It's currenty my second favorite movie of the year after Dune 2 (but definitly more entertaining than Dune 2)
My favourite movies of the decade so far are
Inside Out 2
The Boy & The Heron
Belle
Sonic The Hedgehog
Avatar The Way of Water
The Batman

Spider-Man: No Way Home

A Valhalla Rising mention; Nice!
My favourite film of the year is Poor Things (which was released here in the UK in January 2024).
Second favourite is The Taste of Things, followed by Civil War, Dune 2, and Challengers.
Cant believe Civil War isnt making any lists. I was impressed.
On 2nd viewing I wasn’t impressed with it as much as first time.
Not sure if you saw Robit Dreams, I didn't catch your review if you have. But that is a move worth watching.

Furiosa, Kinds of Kindness, Love lies bleeding, and Civil War
Such a pity Furiosa bombed. We are probably not gonna see Mad Max : Wasteland
I feel bad for people that skipped seeing Furiosa in the theater.
All of Us Strangers and the last one of Miyazaki are also very good and sensible (in it's best meaning) movies
I loved Furiosa. Hated Dune Part 2, and now retroactively Part 1 as well.
You are correct, Dune is like experiencing the bathroom. Some people like the smell of their own shit, and everyone is universally disgusted by the smell of other people's shit.
