Opening with urgency and drum-roll trills, “CUTOUT: Creole Dancer” is an electric way to end Matisseries. The caprice is inspired by Matisse’s 1950 cutout of a spindly dancing figure amidst blocks of bold colors. The entire movement dances and propels until the very end.
Matisseries was dedicated to Trudy Kane upon her retirement as Professor of Flute at the Frost School of Music, University of Miami. Kane spent eleven years teaching at the University following her thirty-two season career as principal flute of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. Kane premiered the work at the Portland Flute Fair and the Seattle Flute Festival in 2019.
Program notes by Emily Bedard Dierickx
Coleman performs the second version of the original flute solo written by Valerie for Trudy Kane, former Principal flutist of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, who introduced Valerie to the painter's works.
