When Alice goes on her jaunt through Wonderland she meets all types. The white rabbit, the Queen of Hearts and a Cheshire Cat. Curiouser and Curiouser is the programme that’s enjoyably ripping out themes from Lewis Carroll’s book and going in search of their counterparts on the wilder shores of British life. In this episode, we finally come face to face with the Dormouse, and yes it‘s asleep.
Like squirrels, we now have two species of dormice in Britain. There’s the edible dormouse - both the Romans and homeowners in Herefordshire seem to swear by it. Then there is the common dormouse which like all animals called common doesn’t seem to be so anymore. And there’s the Berne Convention a European Directive which could have been drawn up by the Mad Hatter. What should have been quite simple becomes quite, quite confusing and the only thing for it is to reach for a loaded rifle.
All becomes horribly clear on Curiouser and Curiouser Sweet dreams.
