Pessoa lived as a work of art. More than an artist that produces works of art for others to consume, we consumed himself and became his art. Friedrich Nietzsche would have approved of it a lot and possibly envied him a little.
I have loved Pessoa since a copy of his selected poems by Johnathan Griffiths (Penguin Modern Poets) fell on my head in a bookshop. He knocked me on teh head alright!! A true literary giant and intriguing.
Jonathan Griffin, not Griffiths, or perhaps it was a heteronym haha! I met him once at the Whitechapel Gallery in London when he gave a reading of his translations of René Char. His Pessoa poems were given to me by a girl from Lisbon I met picking apples in Kent one Summer. I fell in love with her for the Summer and with the book forever!
The programme was for an 'arty' slot on the BBC where more impressionistic and expressionistic forms are encouraged. I wanted to reflect Pessoa's playful side in sound. I wish I had gone further. Matt
we are all like that but seldom realise it , we behave differently with different people , have controversial ,competing views, sometime left wing sometimes right , but most of us go under the delusion we are one person. Pessoa knew differently and showed us what we are in reality, he was a mirror- the first of his kind, we have psychoanalysts to show us now just how complex we really are.
Pessoa was a mirror man. Inside the mirror, he was us. Out of it, he was invisible.

A shame that the programme was more concerned with sounds effects than it was with conducting good interviews.
