Can't wait for the drag race video. Always tysm Grim Reapers for your fun vids.
Drag races in helicopters....now THAT would be fun to see!

Two things brought me back to DCS last year: Grim Reapers videos and the impending OH-58D release. As a former OH-58D U.S. Air Cavalry pilot with almost 5000 hours in this aircraft, it's hard to express how happy this video makes me. Hoping to fly the Kiowa Warrior with GR someday.
Awesome to hear.
If you aint Cav......
Hey Cap. I was an Avionics and weapon systems instructor on the Kiowa during my service in the US Army. If you need more information from a first hand user of this aircraft please let me know!
Thanks!
I'm glad they added this module. It brings me back to my youth when I got to go for a ride in one of these(CH-136) as a cadet. I can't remember the squadron, but it was part of 1 Wing RCAF. I can't ever forget that experience. I returned home with a MRE in my hands, and a smile on my face. I love cold war era military aircraft.
@CAP and GR, I was waiting for your video to explain how to use the Hellfire in the Pilot seat with Co-Pilot controls. GR explained it in the most simple form , dare I say better than the pre-release videos . Thank you for simplifying some of the mapping and controls. The Air Bags are a Surprise when they pop out. Keep on Keeping on. :)
Casmo has had the prerelease version for a few weeks now and has a series of tutorials on all aspects. He’s a former Kiowa/Apache pilot with tours in Iraq (I think) and he can not only tell you simply how to use it, but what how they used it in real life. Like small details about how he would always cock the machine gun prior to using just to make sure it was ready, and why the gun is on the left side and why the Hellfires shoot the inner station’s first because if you jettisoned the missiles it could damage the skids. Just all kinds of stuff like that. Fascinating. If you want a deeper dive but not crazy deep, go show him some love. If you’re a DCS fan you should already be subbed to him. Cap, you did a brilliant job with only having it for such a short time.
I saw a few videos with a test pilot during development... The guy was really good and the flight model seemed top notch.
You could do a revision of the Vietnam scenario where you guys used OV10s and see what if the US Army had Kiowas for observation. It would also be another chance to operate the new F4E. Could even try lasing with the Kiowas and using laser guided bombs on the Phantoms. I'm not sure if that would even be compatible.
very cool. will buy thank you for the quick intro
Kiowa - To light to fight, to slow to run. ;-)
True, but that's why we mostly flew at night and 5 feet off the ground.
Looks like a fun little bird Cap ! Well done :) Still prefer my Hind but its a great module to add to DCS for sure :)
Looks fantastic ❤
Oh thanks god that you are making this, i was afraid you didnt and i needed to see others videos. I like yours torturials the most, so thank you.
I don’t have a booty picture but I think your videos are witty and fun😂
😂
When the AH-64 Apache first came out it did not have the FCR , so they they had to utilize the OH-58D to find and laser the targets for the AH-64. Then the Army decided to put the FCR on the Apache which became the AH-64D Longbow and it made the Kiowa's obsolete.
Thanks Reapers!
You're the only person I've seen using the HUD/Gunsight. The Kiowa is very much a no-frill aircraft and the operational pilots never used it, relying on a grease pen mark on the canopy, and sometimes not even that.
Looks fun
Can't wait for some GR helicopter action with AH64/OH58 hunter killer pairs and/or OH58 battle royale dogfighting!
Looking forward to seeing this in future videos. Would love to see it in combination with the Apache.
Cool new heli reminds me of watching Firebirds they had one just forward scout using that dome to look for baddies. They do go make it very detailed which is great to look over but so many buttons etc at same time lol, Hope to see it used in both scouting and light attack roles in the future.
Definitely my favorite US helicopter. In my limited experience with them before they were phased out, i can definitely tell you its weird shooting your M4 at the guy in the helicopter, and hes also shooting back at you with his M4. But also having them on your side during route clearance and patrol is definitely a good feeling. Too bad they dont have an option for CS gas grenades as well as the smoke.
That kind of AI flying assistant should be implemented on all multi-crew aircraft IMO!
Rapid deployment gear are collapsible gear so they can fit in a C-130, but be rapidly reassembled for use once delivered.
Copy.
Glad to hear your voice again
Can you do a phantom controls setup it would be really helpful
Thanks a lot hop you get better
Omg! I want one!!
22:49 You can't overtorque the engine, but the drive system -everything between the powerturbine and the main and the tail rotor. The turbine engine itself in the case of a helicopter or a turboprop is a selfcontained "thing" that is only there to produce gas with a huge amount of kinetic energy. and the powerturbine(NP) takes this energy that is expelled from the gas producer(NG) through the gas producer's own turbine wheel. This wheel and the powerturbine are not connected, just like in a fan engine. But in a fan engine the wheel that is basically a "powerturbine", is also connected to the low pressure compressor stage(N1) and the fan, in front of the high pressure compressor stages of N2. There the low pressure compressor and the low pressure turbine basically encase the high pressure "gas producer"/N2/the engine core. Whereas in a turboprop, or a helicopter the powerturbine doesn't contribute anything to the compression part of the turbine engine. It only takes the energy out of the highly kinetic exhaust gases produced by the gas producer(NG) and converts it into torque along the drive system and subsequently into NR(rotor) and NP(powerturbine) rpm and inertia as a resultant. If you are forcing a reduction of the rotor rpm(i.e. by yanking on the collective) your torque will rise. If you reduce the rotorblade's AoA again, the torque that got accumulated in the drive system by then gets released again in the form of rotor and powerturbine rpm. But it can take a while until that kind of conversion would result in a sufficent enough NR-rpm(rotor rpm). Aside from that the internal pressure of an overtorque can lead to massive damage along the entire drive system. Particularly inside the gearbox.
You could still overheat the gas producer/turbine/engine core itself though. But the engine and the drive system are more or less two seperate systems. In contrary to a turbo jet, or a fan engine the engines of a turboprop, or a helicopter don't need anything but themselves to function. No seperate low pressure stage/N1. But the propeller of a turboprop and the two rotors of a helicopter obviously need the gas producer/turbine engine to function. The path of direct influence goes only in one direction -from the gas producer(NG) torwards the drive system. This also means, that you can't/wouldn't also reduce the NG rpm when you overtorque the drive system. Which ofc is extremely helpful. Otherwise you could cause an engine flameout, shortly after you've caused an engine burn through.
To simplify things...
The TQ (torque) displayed on the green digits he was showing is the Mast Torque (MQ). Lower down on the instrument panel is the MPD which has the ability to display the Engine Torque (EQ). The OH-58D is power limited due to the transmission, not the engine.
Thanks for the interesting information!
So basically, the gas producing part is a supersized hairdryer blowing against a turbine, which through the shaft/ gear is connected with the rotor? In that case I think there is still some kind of coupling / connection: if pitch of the rotor blade is increased the turbine is putting more resistance to the airflow. So there is more pressure working against the gas stream. Not sure if without the automatic engine controls this could lead to "choking the engine".
@@slowhornet4802 The engine is connected to the transmission via a freewheeling unit. This allows the rotorblades to continue to spin in case of an engine failure (autorotation). Yes, the increase pitch also increases the torque. The OH-58D(R) has FADEC that monitors the engine, torque and power. The FADEC is a smart fuel control that automatically adjusts fuel, hence power, to ensure that the rotors are always spinning at 100% RPM.
@@slowhornet4802 There will be a built up of back pressure the slower the power turbine is spinning, but since the gas producer -like every other turbine engine, is built to sustain a lot of pressure, this additional rise in pressure isn't a big problem.
But the exhaust gases of the engine do not only hold a lot of kinetic energy and the potential to generate a lot of pressure, they also hold a lot of heat that has to be dissipated as quickly as possible. Frequent interruptions, or a prolonged deceleration of the gas flow can lead to a rise of the TGT(Turbine Gas Temperature) inside the interstage turbine area. That's why the TGT gauge is right next to the torque gauge, closest to the pilots point of view. Because they are the two most critical parameters for the two most important systems of the aircraft, the engine and the drive system.
Love the helo, already went through all of the training and I'm having tons of fun running some custom missions to try to get the controls down on the fly. I am having some issues with performance in VR, but in all fairness, it runs about 12,000x better than the Apache!
Probably just need to tweak some settings on my end.
Looks like a ton of fun to fly. Sad there is no mini gun option though.
Imagine sitting there and a freaking Hellfire starts right beside you...
Sounds fun. What are base are you flying from here?
Did you say Australian Army Fictional? The Australian Army *did* operate these (no MMS) up until till they started using Tiger ARHs
NOICE....nearly pressed buy...then remembered the ch47 is coming.....and ive already paid for it 🤭
Can you do a vid in the action of the Trim? And lasing for a fast mover? Pease.. :-}
Hoping my request for a refund on the SE goes thru, def gonna use the store credit for the Kiowa
I'm thinking flying directly over a missile launcher you just machine gunned might not be prudent. We need a helicopter Olympics to see what model dominates in a multi varied combat environment.
I’m not a whirlybird pilot myself, but I’d still feel unbelievably sexy if a Kiowa designates a target for me with his smoke grenade
My instrument panel has a lot of flickering, very noticeable with the white parts, what should I adjust, in settings please.
Now you can remake the movie Firebirds with Nicholas Cage
Shhhhh, that never happened.
Does the ai pilot work when in sitting on the left seat?
if it's Controls are like Gazelle or Huey then it is 🛸
Say, does everyone's OH-58 have a (R) after it? It's the only aircraft I have that has that....also doesn't seem to show flight time in the log book....
ok my oh58 doesnt have any hud/gunsight!! What am I missing?
All i need is a J-10 and my virtual air force is completely.
Is it more complicated than the Ka-50 III?
It’s shouldn’t be and the ka-50 isn’t too bad, it’s just the start sequence
you should like it more then the gaz its twice the price
You'll have to test the new asset in the Black Hawk Down Scenario test that you developed for the other CAS platforms.
During the actual event, there was one unarmed OH-58D on station.
Good idea!
Is this a free mod or a paid module? It seems like they have a bit of work to do on the cockpit. The lighting looks wonky.
It's a full fidelity module, and it isn't early access, but (almost) feature complete
I feel watching this is going to be bad for my wallet...
Not bad for the wallet of those that got on nonfull release of F-15 Strike Dodo Bird. Sad moment for me. More sad moments to come. South East Asia, Harrier all putting on their Dodo Bird outfits now.
@foxhole99 yeah, ED and loRazipam need to get there poop together and stop with the agro
The chat bots these days… I reported them 😉
I go through and ban them once per day but new ones just come back. Not sure what I'm supposed to do?
Ukrainian Air Force with French Mirage 2000 mission video in 3....2....1...
Gunship 2000 anyone?
Not buying any module until ED pays Razbam. Declaring a RAZBAM SUMMER until ED starts treating the developers and ultimately the customers right. NO new modules from any developer. Make it hurt.
You're just hurting the third party developers, not ED. Good way to kill off more development.
DCS is really falling apart :( It's unfortunate how much they don't care about basic playability instead of just pushing more modules constantly.
Valued viewers are still waiting for a proper F4 Phantom guide. There was no time for F4 vut there is time for this crap? Massive letdown. Not to mention Casmo ( actual Kowa pilot) has already covered this Heli, therefore making it redundant.
Are you okay? F4 vídeos are on the channel 🤔
@@JohnathanMoura Those are only basic 2-3 min videos. I will completely skip the fact there is zero WSO station coverage.
Come on man, be patient. He's probably just taking the kiowa out of the way cuz is a easy module
@@JohnathanMoura I agree. You are absolutely right. I guess I'll just try be more patient :)
Mate HAVE YOU SEEN THE VIDEO CAP RELEASED ABOUT HIS VOICE. Like fr give him some chill. He has a life and a family and kids. I am sure making F-4 vids are NOT his highest priority rn
