Heh, the main reason the Germans "figured out" their torpedo issues after the Norway invasion was they captured the British minelayer submarine HMS Seal in the Kattegat. The Germans found that the British torpedo detonators worked much more reliably than their own, so they copied them!
I'm finding that maxing out sailor assignments to your engineering officers when they are tending to the engines is absolutely mandatory with the Type II. The range boost is nice on the Type VII, but on the II it's often the difference between having enough fuel to complete a patrol or not.
Yeah, adding sailors to officers usually improves what they are doing. You can mouse over their task icon to see what the bonuses are. Assigning sailors to the officers on watch increases view range, assigning a sailor to the officer on the hydrophone increases listening range, etc.
As soon as in international waters, "Take that Flag down." 1st Officer smiles, "We're not at war yet, Sir." "Noted, No.1. Take it down, regardless." I luv coastal subs!
The reason you can't set the TDC to follow the UZO in the Type IIa, is because the IIa doesn't HAVE an UZO. Any deck observations are done purely by binocs and periscope. That's one of the things added by the upgrade. The other variant of the Type II includes an UZO.
Really excited for the series! Just a tip is that you can finish off enemy corvettes with the 20mm deck/aa gun if they don’t sink after a torpedo hit. You can also hail merchant ships before attacking to potentially get the enemy crew to evacuate without having to attack, saving you valuable torpedoes for convoys. Because these series are realistic (one-life iron man), I would recommend leaving "dead space" after the sub is sunk. Otherwise the brain can metagame with the time remaining in the video to break the tension.
Pretty sure this'd have a negative impact on the video's place within the algorithm which could end up affecting Wolfpacks channel negatively, probably best to just not look at the video length.

@Wolfpack345 Using the electric engine interchangeably with the diesel engine is crucial for the Type IIA (I do diesel engine on slow speed and electric engine on half speed)

U-1 and U-4 were probably constructed around or at the same time, so this is really one of the first Underseaboats the Kriegsmarine sent into the depths.
That greasegun is an oilcan. And it used t be an actual thing on some older engines that you had to oil some moving parts like valve rocker assemblies once in a while
The type 2 may be slow, and short ranged, but I aways kind of liked it back in SH3. That small size makes you super stealthy. I could sneak into harbours, do surfaced torpedo attacks at night, and NOTHING would detect me! Of course it also helped it was early war and the AI wasn't fighting with a full deck either. Also because of how Sh3 handled crew training a short range boat that sails lots of short patrolls was the best way to skill up a green crew.
Type II no deckgun.... With the operational range of this boat you are supposed to guide in longrange fire from coastal artillery to substitute the deckgun!
Historicly I am not sure. I know regular maintenance was needed to keep them reliable. But at least game mechanics wise, it will reduce the dud chance of the torpedo.
In the game, you're preheating both steam and electric torpedoes to minimize the risk of faults like incorrect depth-keeping or detonators not working. Realistically you would have very little impact on that, as it's primarily caused by faulty detonator designs straight from the factory and torpedoes leaking their vacuum over long-term storage aboard submarines. Historically, only electric torpedoes were preheated, because their batteries had to be around 30 - 40 C in order to ensure they would travel at their max speed out to their max distance.
In game torpedos need to be heated to reduce the chance of a dud. In reality, preheating was only necessary for the electric G7e and G7es torpedos. The batteries of those torpedos had to be recharged periodically and the engine had to be preheated to 30°C to get maximum range. G7e had a range of 5.000m (cold only 3.000m) and G7es had a range of 5.700m (cold only 5.000m). At least that's what i could find on German Wikipedia. Couldn't find any German documents.
historically preheating electric torpedoes could extend their range by 60% (source: U-Boat War Patrol: The Hidden Photographic Diary of U-564, Chapter 2)
