We discuss Andy Johns and Bruce Fairbairn producing For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge and Balance in the 90's. Also why is there such a lack of BASS in the mix of OU812? And is there potentially new remixes/remasters of the Van Hagar albums in the works? All of that and more in this exclusive chat with Michael Anthony from THE CIRCLE!

The nicest, most classy member of VH by far. To speak as kindly as he does about his ex-band mates, even after they knifed him in the back, is incredible. He is also smart and realizes grudges get you nowhere. He made his millions, is still with his high-school sweetheart and still actively tours and is loved and revered by fans-all while retaining his humble attitude and integrity. Michael Anthony is the true success story of Van Halen.

1984... St Louis... I was 16 and a huge fan of VH.. After the concert, me and a few buddy's jumped in my car and followed the limos to the hotel. I had brought my guitar, a red 1982 Dean Baby Z, to try to get Eddie to sign. Unfortunately, Ed's limo beat us to the hotel but then Michael's limo pulled up to the enterance... I waited there with my guitar and as he walked by I asked him if he'd sign it... He stopped, looked at me, looked at the guitar and said, "Shiiit"... and continued walking... Still a fan..!

This is too funny. I cannot just NOT say anything. lol The things I'm going to repeat in this rant are things I've read in interviews with John Sykes, Aynsley Dunbar, and Neil Murray, along with other musicians that were playing in bands, that toured with different versions of Whitesnake during 1987-1988. Some of it came straight from Coverdale's own mouth. I'm writing this as a *disclaimer* that it's second hand information*. The last thing i need is Coverdale's greed ramping up and having him send lawyers after me for being a fan and having a rant about what a lot of people already know!! Again, It's all *secondhand info*, but if you're a fan of Whitesnake and paid attention back in '87-'88, its pretty obvious what I'm saying is VERY factual.
Here goes:....It is kinda off topic, although it is relevant, to the conversation that you were having with Michael about re-mastering some of the Van Halen catalog. At around the 10:20 minute count, you mentioned David Coverdale was toying with the idea of "re-imagining" lol, some of the old Whitesnake albums? This isn't shocking at all and I'm fairly sure a lot of other people/fans 'in the know', will completely agree. I'd bet Coverdale does "re-imagine" the album "Slide it In", but most of all, the 1987 self titled "Whitesnake" album. He'll probably start with as many of, if not all of John Sykes guitar parts/whole songs "re-structured", "re-written","re-imagined" and just enough where John Sykes doesn't have to be given credit for the songs and therefore, Coverdale will no longer have to pay Sykes any royalties for some, or all of those songs that John wrote on/for those albums. I'll give a good example of how easy a subtle change, can cut an artist completely out of royalties. For those who don't understand this type of greed read this... MTV changed the iconic opening bass line of Megadeth's Peace Sells, but who's buying, by just cutting a beat, or two. MTV used that opening bass riff for MTV music news opening credits, Head Banger's Ball, and they used it for many other things over the years. If you watched MTV back in the late 80's, 90's, up to the early 2000's think about how many times that you heard the Peace Sells bass line? Easily thousands, if you had MTV on as white noise like most people did back then. MTV, because of that simple beat cut, NEVER paid Megadeth one red cent for using that music, all of those years. The really bad thing, because of that drum beat cut, they never legally had to, once they "re-imagined" the bass line and the drum beats! Vanilla Ice did the same thing with "Under Pressure" to create the "Ice Ice Baby" thing lol. I cannot and never will call that a song. I don't know what you'd call it, but it ain't music and it ain't hip hop, I don't care what anybody says. lol Vanilla Ice stole the real music by changing the beat in a sample. Easy as that. We all know what Suge Night did to Vanilla Ice though! Karma's a bitch Ice! Anyway, he took that sample and used it. He never owed David Bowie a dime and "Ice Ice Baby" sold millions of records. Now, back to my original point. The main reason Coverdale would do that to those albums would never be what most bands would be doing it for...themselves and the fans, for him, it would solely be for 'new money' off old material. A lot of people-fans, DO NOT know about-(a lot do know) what I'm going to explain next and they should because Coverdale is a greedy, self-absorbed, arrogant asshole for what he did to that band in 1987, but specifically John Sykes. Here's a PRIME EXAMPLE of Coverdale's greed in action : Coverdale was informed by the Geffen label guys that "Is This Love" was going to be another stand alone hit, for the Whitesnake album. To assure himself that John Sykes wouldn't make anymore money than he was already going to make off of the Whitesnake album, he had Adrian Vandenberg re-record the single for "Is This Love", in it's entirety. Recorded as a 'radio single' lol. Yeah, right! He wanted to cut John Sykes out of money anywhere and whenever any chance was available. If they hadn't re-recorded that single Sykes probably wouldnt have to ever work again. I might be pushing it a bit, but he lost millions and Coverdale gained millions, not having to share the royalties and publishing. On another note, Coverdale single handedly ruined what could have been one of the best live tours of the 80's and quite possibly a follow up album that may have blown the Whitesnake out of the water! The Blue Murder album did very well. It had great material and even had a few good singles on it. Would have been even better as Whitesnake material. If you ever saw Whitesnake live with John Sykes, Aynsley, and Neil you known what I mean by a great show! Damn, they were good live! Coverdale's greed and jealousy of John Sykes lead to John and the band's firing. Consequently the hiring of another FULL BAND of hired guns like Adrian Vandenberg, Steve Vai, Vivian Campbell at one point until Vai came into the fold, Rudy Sarzo, and Tommy Aldridge. Those players were hired to replace the previous Whitesnake members and they toured their asses off, pushing the Whitesnake album and making Coverdale rich AF, mainly because he no longer had to pay the guys who wrote the Whitesnake album. I'm sure they got publishing for the songs they were credited for on Whitesnake, but not the money they should have made touring and supporting the album that they worked hard to write and record. I can't even imagine how fevered those shows would have been with Sykes and the other guys feeding off the energy of those songs they wrote together! The hired guns were good live. I saw Whitesnake 4 times with the mix of all those guys. Anyway, Coverdale found out during the making of Whitesnake that Sykes and others were contemplating firing him, from the band. Because Coverdale claimed he had throat problems, was sick, didn't like some of the music arrangements, etc, etc, he wouldn't come in to record vocals when needed in the studio. Sykes got frustrated along with the other musicians to the point of discussing with the label about possibly firing Coverdale and finishing the album without him. Rightly so. We've all heard the guitar masterpiece that John Sykes was writing and recording! Who wouldn't be frustrated with an egomaniac singer slowing its process down. Anyway, Coverdale managed to regain control of his ship and exacted revenge by firing all involved and cutting most out of any and all money opportunities involved with the Whitesnake album. Coverdale reportedly even went as far as claiming that he wrote guitar parts for some of the songs and Coverdale couldn't at that time barely play 3 chords on a guitar, much less write badass riffs like the ones heard on that album! Long story short and to get to my point, if Coverdale does "re-imagine" those two records "Slide it In" and "Whitesnake" and you don't see John Sykes, Aynsley Dunbar, or Neil Murray credited for the music, or songs like they were on the original releases, do those guys a favor and stick it to David Coverdale.... DO NOT BUY THOSE RE-ISSUES!!! It would serve Coverdale a very cold dish, he so richly deserves for cutting those men out of royalties and opportunities to play for fans live on that album! They deserved to be credited on ALL of those songs! Boycott those new Whitesnake recordings, if they happen and those musicians aren't getting their dues!!! It's the right thing to do for them!

Van Halen with DLR in the early years has always been a favorite of mine for many reasons.
Even though EVH was so incredible, Michael’s bass was better for me personally back in those days because I was a young girl/kid (age 10 in 1980) listening to my older brothers music and the bass were the beats I danced to. Van Halen was one of the few bands of my brothers I could dance to and Michael’s bass raised the bar for my ears to pay close attention to at an early age. Michael Anthony is THE most down to earth nicest guys EVER - always took the high road during the squabbles AND his background vocals are AS BIG a part of the Van Halen sound and what made them LEGENDS as much as Alex’s signature snare sound or Ed’s brown sound tone - I got to meet Mike about 3 times at meet and greets and backstage stuff - once at the Philly Spectrum the VH III tour - sometimes I wanna cry listening to the VH catalogue these days because I’m a huge Edward fan and he’s the reason I started playing guitar after seeing him on the 1984 tour but then I smile real big at the awesome vocals and choruses when they all come in like angels - glad to hear this great interview and Mike’s awesome attitude 🤘🤘🤘

Saw VH in OKC in 1992. Vince Neil opened, and we all sat around drinking beer talking. All of a sudden, the lights dimmed, it was quiet for a sec, and they started playing Mine All Mine. Everyone threw their beers & rushed the stage. We made it to the front (no seating) right between Mike & Sammy. Crazy good concert. Encore 2 was Rockin in the Free world by Neil Young. Sammy would stop the show every 10-20 minutes & make sure everyone was ok because there was so much pushing to get up front. Mike didn’t have his Jack Daniels bass because he had set it on fire 2 nights before in Houston. Thank you so much for the awesome show’s!
