What saved the dropdash for me was that you can actually use it to bypass the shields of the swords enemies instead of disabling it with cyloop. Hitting multiple enemies with a clean drop dash is super satisfying and sonic.. sonic-ky

I was really excited for the Sonic corruption thing. They played it throughout the whole game, showing him slowly deteriorating until he finally lost the battle and got stuck midway realities. And then it gets solved in the same cutscene 2 minutes later. I do like how Amy, Tails and Knuckles sacrificed themselves to save Sonic, but I wish it was padded out a bit more.
Regarding the cyber corruption storyline, I think it's possible that Amy, Tails, and Knuckles being playable characters was something planned for the original campaign. Maybe the new story content and playable characters coming in 2023 were what was originally meant to be the final island: Sonic's friends have to find the Chaos emeralds to help him fend off the cyber illness, which could've resulted in a Cyber Sonic.
It'd certainly be a lot better for Tails than him basically breaking the fourth wall and saying what me and a friend say about him being stuck on the sidelines, ever since 06. With the scene of him having a crisis of confidence kinda comes across as Ian Flynn "I shall have have Tails have a crisis of confidence and then... I will do nothing." Had Tails been playable, it'd certainly give off more of an emotional pay off if we actually saw him doing things and proving just exactly why Sonic counts on him. Like Sonic and Tails R did, even if it was a radio drama rather than a game, given it had a scene of Tails voicing concern about slowing Sonic down, in the Emerald quest.
I still thought it could of been possible for them to just add them to the campaign as a bonus. Maybe to further the story line We know how each character would work within the gameplay
@@zalz I think it comes down to the time and resources they had, and it's clear Sonic Team was running short on both. Considering they are currently making other playable characters, perhaps Amy, Tails, and Knuckles were (as you said) a bonus to further the storyline, but we'll have to see when they drop the DLC next year.
Hey, what if they have the cyber Sonic become The End's minion and have him chase and attack his friends as they try to gather the Chaos emeralds or have some kind of boss fight? Maybe too ambitious to Sonic Team for DLC.
For the parry mechanic, I’d give it the leniency of the parry in Metal Gear Rising, where you still have to time it, but it’s not super strict. Having unlimited timing pretty much defeats the purpose.
exactly, and like in mgr, if you don't time it perfectly it will just block the attack, but if you time it perfectly raiden will use a counterattack. Kinda wish it worked like that
8:12 the bar on the side is the quick cyloop charge you need to fill it and it will deplete after every use it’s not broken you just didn’t pay attention
I read on twitter that a cut explanation for the end is that it’s a manifestation of one’s fear. It’s a being which has no form but rather presents itself as whatever someone fears most or something like that. Sonic’s fear is a dead planet hence why the end takes on a purple moon aesthetic. I think this is a really cool idea and wish they managed to include it somewhere
@@Riannalynn123 yeah I’m guessing sega couldn’t find a way to implement that explanation because the moment the end is revealed to us is the moment we fight it head on so an explanation couldn’t have fit anywhere I’m guessing. The DLC could totally expand upon that though and hopefully it does
This is close. It's actually meant to be a representation of death, and The End takes on different appearances based on how those that see it perceive death. The purple moon is meant to be what we the player see as death (this is a Japanese culture/mythology sort of thing). What Sonic and Sage see isn't known, but it's interesting that Sonic seems to identify it as strictly male, whereas Sage does not imply any specific gender to it.
Another point related to The End is that this is pretty much the best they could do with such a limited time apparently, so it's kinda sad that it's not fully realized
if i’m not mistaken, i believe it’s implied that the ancients didn’t “die out”, but instead evolved into what would become the chao. it’s why chaos resembles them, as he is a mutated chao, which caused his appearance to revert back to what his species looked like pre-evolution. this is really more speculation, though, since its a conclusion you have to reach yourself
One of my biggest nitpicks for this game which carries over from forces is that jumping on enemies kills your momentum, it was awful in forces and it’s awful here
Yeah but at the same time it helps you to kill the heights with that super bounce glitch. Like you do the stomp attack thing, you go so high and the only way to cancel it is with double jump because it kills it, so in a fun way it's awful but for speedruns it's good
@@najibosman6497 Debatable. Spin jumping always put a halt on your momentum in boost games, especially Generations. The only game that really beneffited from jumping on enemies is colors, that game had absurd launching properties.
13:10 According to Ian Flynn on the Bumblekast that Amy's characterization was due to needing to fit the somber tone of the first island and would've been more bubbly if she was on one of the later islands. Personally I think Tails might've been a better fit for the first island, but that's just my opinion.
Pretty sure the parry was intended to be timing base, but since they had the genius idea of making it mandatory for some of the boss fights like Wyvern and the Knight, they probably had to make it super easy so little Timmy can finish the game.
@@Handepsilon true they should fix the floating parry thing but for my opinion, i think in the future there should be an option for a hold parry and a timed parry
I hope in the future they can change the inputs for some of the combat moves. For instance, the Spin-Slash is activated just by pressing the Jump button, but once you have it unlocked you can no longer just jump normally mid-combo. There were countless times where I would instinctively jump before using a Homing Attack and it would just lock me into Spin-Slash on some other enemy. For some reason, it also completely removes the ability to use the Drop Dash in combat as well. If you Drop Dash into an enemy, it will just make you do Spin-Slash, even if your combo meter is at 0. This applies to almost all the other moves in the game too. Regardless of if you've actually started a combo, just pressing the input when an enemy is around will make you do the move. You can't normally Stomp on enemies, you can't use the Air Boost to close the gap if you've launched them away without activating Loop Kick or Homing Shot. Perhaps instead of using single inputs for the attacks, Sonic's traversal and combat moves can be more intertwined. Keep the punches and kicks from the Homing Attack, but maybe bring back the Spindash so you can launch enemies. Sonic Momentum has a similar idea, and I think it works great there.
My biggest "nitpick" is the fact that we waited 5 years for a game that amounts to "a step in the right direction". Like, between Forces and Frontiers i started and finished university so it's hard to feel like the wait was truly worth it. I sincerely hope SEGA gives Sonic Team the manpower they need, because I don't know how I feel about having to wait another 5 years for a game that might suffer from the same issues
The cyloop spots in Chaos Island could have easliy used an exclamation point on them instead of a treasure chest. The challenge spots already use a question mark so it seems like it would been a no-brainer.
3:22 I feel the way to fix the way the light speed dash is to have you hold the left stick if you don’t want to go flying and if you want to keep momentum all you have to do is click it.
They fixed the light dash. At least on my console, it works exactly how it should. At first it didnt, but after that first update it seems they corrected it.
15:00 the end is the embodiment of the end of all things (for example death). And the end can look different for everyone. For us(the audience) we see the end as a moon because in fiction the moon represents death. For sonic and sage they see something else, which is why sonic refers to the end as she while sage refers to the end as a it.
13:40 I really think the story would've worked better if Sage had formed a truce with Sonic much earlier on and they'd both be working together for Sonic to free his friends and Sage to free Eggman. Sage would be cold at first, but Sonic actually being hyper go luck and chipper would get her to open up and experience emotions in a more organic way than just watching Sonic and his friends from afar. Have the cyber space levels be Eggman and Sage hacking and gathering information for Sonic to progress through the Starfall Islands. Or maybe people would complain about that one? But, hey, what's done is done.
My biggest nitpick, after Sage's death, Sonic just left without even checking or even caring about what happened to her. Sonic just simply ignored her last dying wish, to take care of father and just went to celebrate with his friends, while Eggman morns her daughter all alone. This is unacceptable in every way. This is not Sonic's character AT ALL. This whole game Sonic was trying to help her and even stopped Knuckles from hurting her. Just so, at the end he can simply walk away. This is the exact scenario from SA2. Shadow sacrificed his life trying to save humanity. And that was a BIG emotional ending with Sonic finding Shadow's ring and giving it to Rouge, while admitting he looked everywhere for him. So what the f*** happened here? What's the difference? Why would such a great storyline in a Sonic game in many years do that? Everything was going great. Why would they fix every other character's past mistakes like Tails but completely ruin the main character's personality? I am pissed with that ending. At the very least, Sonic should have went to Eggman first and told her the harsh truth.
The cyloop doesn’t work half the time because you actually can’t do it whenever you want. There’s a meter on the right that indicates if you’re able to use it or not. I believe it’s also in the move explanation
Here's the thing about the Ancients Nitpick. They do explain or at least hint as to what happened to them after the sealing of The End. Survivors from The Ends second attack fled to what would end up becoming Angel Island. Going to Sage on the last Island tells that the Ancients were only able to find the Starfall Islands the most habitual place for them. Going to the Egg Memos pointed out that the Ancients evolved or devolved due too radiation, later becoming. Possibly. The Chao. With Chaos himself being this odd off spring that's related but different. So WE DO HAVE AN EXPLANATION!!!
With the new update being out I feel slot of people's nitpicks of the game have been fixed since we have, spin dash, momentum not just in the islands but cyberspace aswell and can even edit in the settings of how quickly you want sonic to lose momentum when jumping or when you stop pushing the joystick
The open world's design felt really divorced from the platforming parts of it. Little if any of the islands used platforming challenges as part of the terrain itself, it was all suspended rails and springs. So when you had a waypoint to follow, most times you could just run straight to it without issue.
8:10 there is a guage on the right that tells you how many quick cyloops you have. Red means you got none and have to combo enemies well and build it up until it turns blue. If the guage is full, you have 2 cyloops, if its half way, then you have 1.
About the quick cyloop: The game doesn't tell you this, but when you unlock it a second bar below the phantom rush bar is displayed, and a lot of the time, it's red. You need to fill up the bar by fighting the enemies, and when you fill it up it becomes blue, letting you use the quick cyloop only twice. (you can also cancel nearly every move by dodging, which is quite lenient if you don't want to watch the entire animation)
I get what you mean in nitpick 39 but they can't just give you all the answers, the MEs correlation with the CE will be explained in the next game (probably), and the "ZAP" symbol is meant to represent the passing away, your goal being fulfilled or is the ancients symbol, Eggman states that they couldn't survive, (they couldn't adapt to the new world) a small part of them came to angel island and built sky sanctuary, then they probably evolved into chaos, with a Chao being mutated and having it's ancients genes show up, or as we know it, Chaos, the god of destruction (another thing: angel island at the time wasn't an island but a piece of land connected to west side island and south island or the mainland, with Tikal or Chaos, then lifting it up in the sky) In conclusion, this stuff is not explicitly stated in-game because they wanted the fans to discover/theorize about it
One thing that drives me crazy that doesn't even matter is the quick step. every quick step before forces gave you the sensation of dodging at breakneck speeds with a little animation to go with it. But in forces and frontiers, sonic just moves to the side with no wind animation or after image. Again, it doesn't really matter, but it does drive me insane.
So much respect for this video!! Lots of people seem to think critique is inherently a negative thing. Being hype for the game is cool and all but the game goes nowhere if it doesn't improve.
Okay, to be fair, the 4th island IS basically the 1st island, just the backend of it. You even go through Giganto's arena when climbing up one of the towers
I’d love to see a new Sonic model that gives Sonic a fresh new look while also keeping the modern feel. Maybe since it’s next Gen, Sonic’s quills could be a bit more pronounced like the Sonic movie. Give him more realistic looking shoes that still keep the iconic style instead of the metal plate like things they are now.
My biggest nitpick is how mindless alot of the level design in the open zone areas were. I wish the level assets were built into the environment and not hovering above it. Sonic games used to be really good about that, but I noticed Forces has the same issue of inorganic level design.
I thought the Cyber form was gonna straight up kill Sonic the more I played it. My gripe is I feel like they should've let that moment last a bit longer. Show his friends mourning Sonic is braindead, that their isn't a way to save him, and THEN make them get the idea that maybe they can counteract the corruption Cyber energy
I agree with all of this, ESPECIALLY the combat nitpicks. Towards the end of the game I started avoiding combat with anything that wasn't a mini-boss. Enemies being so squishy and turning into blocks really started to suck the fun out of the combat, because they'd either die instantly or brick up and bring my combos to a disapointing halt. They should have bulked up the enemies, and maybe made it so that if I hit the shell enough times it knocks the enemy out of it. That way I could choose to either prolong the fight for funsies, or end it faster with a quick cyloop. I don't mind the parry window personally. I'd much rather it be too forgiving than have it be as tight as Sekiro or something, though I'll agree it could use an adjustment to add a bit more depth and challenge to the mechanic. Perhaps it could just be on like a short 1 second timer or something; that way you don't have to be super precise, but you still need to pre-empt the attack instead of just holding the move until something happens.
with the story related aspects you mention i feel we will find out more in the DLC and sequel. i cant wait. and im honeslty glad they are still working on the game. They couldnt really do that back in 2006 when Sonic 06 came out.
Actually, they totally could have back in 2006. In fact, Sonic 06 literally did receive MULTIPLE paid DLCs, but you never hear about those. There was no excuse, even back in 2006, for SEGA and Sonic Team to leave that game in the state it was and still is.
In regards to the quick cyloop not working, you need to use the normal cyloop enough to fill up a meter. Once that meter is full you can use the quick cyloop. In the footage you’ve shown, the meter wasn’t filled when you tried to use it, hence it not working.
Randomly going into 2D sections and randomly being launched across the map via automation bothers me to no end. On top of that traversal was rough when collecting certain memory tokens.
The fact that they're honest and kind corrections to make the game better makes it automatically fair. Sonic team should see this, they totally can make it work!
the corruption thing felt like it was either going to be something but they didn't have enough time to actually do something with it, or that the corruption wasn't actually there and was made pretty late so they could excuse why other characters can't help Sonic.
Nitpicking the nitpick! 1. Chaomix not knowing how to turn off prompts??? 3. That will cause a problem within the problem, being that you will double jump when you want to drop dash. (sensitivity) 5. This isn't a debuff, because that stomp isn't supposed to be used for platforming... It is supposed to be used for combat... 27 + 33-40. This is supposed to be honest not opinion lol. The rest are good points, and this game is not good, nor bad. RATING: 70 - 85
To address the Power Boost nitpick, you can actually adjust your top speed in the settings, and dropping that down also drops the speed of the Power Boost.
I appreciate you managing to give valid criticisms to the game without resorting to absolutely trashing it. It’s super refreshing to see. The game is a blast and I love it to bits, but I know it still has some issues that hold it back from being the best it can be. Honestly, my biggest gripe is that the battle with The End just wasn’t quite the final battle I was hoping it would be. I still had fun with it, but I wish that there was just a bit more that had to do with actual combat rather than just being a bullet hell. I kind of get the feeling that they really did want to do more with it but just ran out of time to really flesh it out. Also, I wish there was a bit more to the drop dash. Some of the most fun I had was finding different inclines to climb up to and then just roll down them and go ridiculously fast. There was no real reason to do it other than it was just fun. I kind of wish there were a bit more challenges based around it and that it could’ve been a bit more fleshed out, as there is momentum in the game that just isn’t quite fully utilized. And honestly, that’s it! Everything else about the game I really love and it still ranks as my favorite Sonic game of all time! And considering we’ve already had some people like Kishimoto listening to advice and criticisms about the game, I think it’s only going to get better from here on out. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for the blue blur!
The DualSense controller offers the perfect solution for the Power Boost. Ever player Rift Apart? There's a shotgun that shoots long range projectiles if you hit R2 halfway and short range ones if you press it all the way down. It feels like the trigger has 2 levels and it's awesome. What if the normal boost was activated on a light press of R2, but you could Power Boost by depressing it all the way when you have max rings?
It already actually works like that lol. I know because whenever i don't fully press down on R2 i never get powerboost when i activate it with my controller at least. I don't really use first party controllers anymore for the most part though so maybe its a third party controller bug.
My problems with the drop dash are how consistently unreliable it is; more often than not you'll find that it stops Sonic in his tracks in the 2D sections of Cyberspace whenever you move the left stick in any direction, and it's even worse when going uphill.
My nitpicks are as follows: 1. Sonic sometimes outright misses his intended destinations when bouncing off of springs. Like... He'll hit a spring, and the spring will launch him way over his destination (often times to his doom). Also, sometimes when going too fast, you can just outright miss a spring or a dashy-thing or some other thing even if that thing is right in front of you when you are running. 2. The lag on the steam port. 3. The inability to fight the titans again (aside from Supreme) without starting a whole new save. 4. Also, this is something that I have been missing for over a decade from Sonic games, but I do miss the ability to do a non-homing homing attack (or simply a jump dash) like you could in Sonic Adventure, Adventure 2, Heroes, Shadow The Hedgehog and 06 (and other games for that matter). Basically, I am referring to the ability to dash forward in midair via a homing attack without an enemy or an object having to be near. You should get the picture, but if you still don't get what I mean, think back to Sonic Adventure/Adventure 2 about what would happen if you did a homing attack but no enemies/springs/rails/other home-in objects were near. That is what I miss. Sure, you can still get that midair forward momentum by boosting in midair, but sometimes the boost is too overkill for what I want. Aside from that, I really don't have any problems.
my biggest issue isn't that there isn't a new model, it's that they're not using the old one from generations. the new running, walking and standing animations are all completely inferior, and even sonic's model and colour looks wrong, which is something I expected them to fix from forces
I honestly wish we had a bit more variety in stage layouts and anesthetics for Cyberspace stages. Everyone and their mother has kinda already talked about their gripes with only having 4 themes, but the level asset recycling only being from Sonic Adventure 2, Unleashed and Gens just kinda feels...incomplete. I mean we literally have the first 3 modern stages of Gens in this game, aesthetics and everything. Give me some SA1, Heroes, maybe Colors, or hell even 06 level assets could have been cool.
It would have been predictable, but I’m surprised you didn’t mention the final… “boss”. That was the biggest gut punch for me. I was so triggered I didn’t even finish it and just watched the final cutscenes on TH-cam.
Agree with ever nitpick list you got except kinda the Amy parts. I thought she was fine after being sadden for what happened to the Koco n completely fine with her not trying to fall over Sonic again. Tho I do agree that Amy could have gotten more cheerful or have funny moments with Sonic, still I don't think the writers dropped the ball with Amy. Plus I enjoy the ending where she wanted to continue to help more folks out just like her Adventure days. As for Tails n Sage, ya both needs work. Knuxs, while I wish both Sonic n Knuxs could have less awkward smirk moments, still Knuxs was done right in Frontiers. Seriously I never gave fs for Knuxs since I was a kid so the fact that this is the year where Movie 2 and Frontiers puts respect to Knuxs's character and backstory is honestly refreshing and amazing👏. Honestly can't wait for update 3 for more Knuxs story n finally gameplay of him in 3d. Hope next year or 2, Shadow gets the same respect as Knuxs next. Also one more thing, wish we had more Eggman moments, especially with Sage cuz his moment of feeling depressed over Sage's death honestly felt flat imo. Plus I remember one quote from the devs that they would give Eggman a special moment like Adventure 2 where you get to see his human side. You kinda get that with Eggman's memos but still that's disappointing since you only hear Eggman's moments throughout the memos and barely see Eggman himself.
Agreed, I really liked Amy's character dynamic in this game. Previous games had her motivation as love for Sonic, but Frontiers gives her more depth and makes her more motivated by love in general. I think it's a refreshing take on her character.
What's wrong with Tails? Didn't he rescue Sonic from cyberspace with Knuckles and Amy? Doesn't that show him redeeming himself and not just acknowledging the fact that he should no longer be a coward?
15:00 the end is literally the end like the idea of it but as a physical incarnation all things eventually come to a end the only thing you can do is delay it
About the screen freeze thing, the best workaround is to air boost right after hitting an enemy, or to slide into an enemy because you can immediately boost afterwards
2:36 one thing about the drop dash that confuses me is that when you use it to go downhill, you gain speed. So momentum is in the game and it's just applied to this move? Why?
Another gameplay thing that should be fixed up a bit, is the fact that you only lose rings after hitting the ground when hit. And you can enter the parry stance while flying if you're quick enough and just negate the damage entirely... Hmm... Actually, that's kind of cool. Still makes the Parry too broken though.
I absolutely agree on everyone getting new models, not only Sonic, but Tails, Knuckles, Amy and Eggman. We might’ve gotten better writing but if we are truly gonna move forward and put the previous Era behind us we need new models. Gimmie Long Quills Sonic back and different idle animations, yes I know as Sonic slowly gets corrupted with Cyber Energy his idles change. Big has the benefit of not being in any of the 2010 games (or the Meta Era if you wanna call it that) Big’s model looks great and I love his expressions.
Also, make everyone's hands and feet a little smaller, for goodness' sake! I get that big hands help to make characters more expressive, but when they're the size of foam fingers it's too much. Boom is a good benchmark for how the characters should be proportioned (in terms of their hands, feet and faces)
13:16 she just saw someone die lol. It makes sense Amy would be shaken up by that. I'm more thrown off by her "I wanna share my love with the world" line since she's already a very caring person. She already shares her compassion with others
I found the Giganto battle to be pretty challenging, simply because I only upgraded my ring capacity two times and figure stuff out fast. the rest of the Titans were impossible to lose to, because I had too many rings, which forces Giganto to be the most memorable.
I have a few issues wit the story like wit wut they do wit Tails feels like an overcorrection for the past decade & that part in particular feels like Ian Flynn bein like "HEY LOOK AT ME I'M FIXIN IT THAT'S COOL RIGHT?" Completely forgettin Tails HAS been on his own before like say UNLEASHED. Tails was done "well" for the most part I feel but it wasn't so much execution or intentions but direction that bothers me. Puttin so much attention to the "inconsistency" doesn't help & only tends to backtrack his character to Adv 1 days which now that I think bout it might be the point for everyone to some degree. A spiritual reset that only regards the 2010's beyond the offhand reference cus that's wut ppl didn't like. U can def tell Ian Flynn is tryin little by little is tryin to insert HIS SONIC into the writin & even shows this wit the random refences to boom/idw stuff that wasn't a thing before like tangle/sticks. He's luckily bein held back by the overall plot by SEGA he still has to work under but who knows how long that'll last. Sometimes the writin feels like the WRITERS talkin to u DIRECTLY instead of lettin it jus play out in the story naturally. I'd have jus done Sonic lookin behind tails in slight amazement before smirkin at how focused tails is at the task. The references R great & I LOVE the continuity but that suffers a similar issue to a less egregious degree like when they haphazardly mentioned Dark Gaia jus cus they couldn't find a better way to integrate it. It jus feels so tongue in cheek like "don't wanna piss off unleashed fans"(I'm Unleashed fans & I'm pissed now so good job). Also Sages' relationship wit Eggman while endearin comes off a little cheep & is also HELLA inconsistent wit the egghead for the past 30+yrs(I do like Sage though). Knuckles was good don't get me wrong but he's def the more openly introverted type than Sonic is so him outright sayin he envies Sonic feels slightly out of character & I don't think it would be that hard to "fix" this, jus change/add a few parts while keepin the same overall conversation. Amy feels like her Boom self to an extent which makes sense but I think that's fine since Boom Amy is my fav ver(She actually was wut got me to like/understand main Amy after hatin her for yrs lol)but I will miss her more loud hyperactive self in the older 3D games(such character progression on my part lol). . Initially I was worried for the story CUS It was Ian Flynn, I got a love hate relationship wit his writin in IDW after bingin the past 50 odd issues. He created & I kid u not THE ABSOLUTE WORST "SONIC" I HAVE EVER SEEN IN MY LIFE! I CAN'T EVEN SAY IT'S ACTUALLY SONIC JUS SOME OBOMINATION THAT WEARS HIS SKIN THERE TO FRAME HIMSELF AS SUCH! But aside from mostly that in particular I can't deny he & his team know the characters really well for the most part. He's a really "good" writer but not the best "Sonic" writer imo. I'll say that while NOT "perfect" Frontiers Sonic is technically much better than before(even though I don't hate meta era Sonic lol(aside from Lost world). He feels like a nice in-between of OG/Meta era Sonic which is nice (Meta era Sonic has never outright gone against anythin that makes sonic, sonic & surprisingly keep a lot intact in the most subtle of ways despite the writers mostly never bein that familiar wit the games till maybe forces). This game from gameplay to story is the most ambitious since 06 & the third most ambitious of ALL the games under Adventure 1/06 & Imo it succeeds at it overall & I'm excited for the next thing to come but all this has made me come to a realization... Western writers shouldn't touch sonic games no matter how well they know the universe/characters or how "good" of a writer they R. I think it'd be best to jus leave it to Japanese writers mainly CUS of the way they write (that in particular is somethin hard to explain even if u're a weeb like me lol). They seemed to have a "finesse" to writin Sonic not jus in games but any media by them & always keep consistent to a surprisin degree(there felt like unspoken nuance to it). Western writers can't do it the same cus their priorities R diff. Sonic from the beginnin has always had trouble from the first game wit translatin himself over & funnily enough it wasn't till 06 where that was finally bein fixed for the main games but that only lasted till 2010 where SEGA tried addressin ppl's "issues" wit 2000's Sonic stuff & we're only jus fixin it now after a decade cus they were too afraid. & by usin Ian Flynn for writin it shows they still somewhat R. I jus hope the award they'll get for this doesn't get taken too far like wit Lost-World/Forces but the difference is the issues now will be so subtle unlike before even Sonic fans won't see an issue overall. I really liked the more questions than answers approach lore stuff with the Emeralds. I don't EVER want a true answer on wut they R or where they come from beyond the vaguest possibilities. From wut I can tell the ancients didn't CREATE them they jus used them before anyone we've known up to this point(which kinda leaves the Gaia temples up in the air but whateves ig). & EVEN THEN the M.E. IS STILL a HUGE MYSTERY cus IT WAS ON EARTH 1ST! I was initially VERY worried but save for wut may come in the future I LOVED THIS APPROACH SO MUCH!
I liked CS at the end despite agreein it's the worst part. The reused level design wit these controls is so unique in a fun way despite the awkwardness. That Should prob control either more like pure boost(say colors) or the open zone(FUCK THE DRIFT STAGE THO). No more SS/CP(I've given up on GH lol). While the 2D stages were the worst part of CS(I have NO issue wit 2D in modern Sonic AT ALL) for me I really liked it in Chaos Island(really adds to the Chaos lol) tho I admit it can be a bit much sometimes & ur not always afforded an easy exit when u enter accidentally. Chaos also prob should've had a diff sign to indicate if there was a collectable or a traversal object(i.e. springs etc.) to cyloop on the ground. I liked Unleashed combat more(despite not bein the best at DMC/GoW kind've games) but Frontiers has a mostly simpler "Sonic'y" approach that'll prob work for more ppl especially cus it's more directly integrated without havin to "completely change character/playstyle"(tho the parry is a bit too easy to use especially on hard where at least there they def could've tightened the window a bit). I think the last 2 "Islands" should've stayed as 1 but SEGA prob really wanted that "5 Island" headline as a strong markettin ploy. I also really liked the Final Final boss bein a Toho bullet-hell Ikaruga kinda thing(felt like somethin outta Nier). Though I did get the feelin playin it there was somethin missin(like there was supposed to be 1 extra faze that would truly cap it off that was left out purposefully). I think boost in Open Zone is nice but could do more, 1. Make the "super boost" mode after Ring collectin allow u to walk on water, 2. Let that same boost damage enemies a little(like a combo starter). It's def weird that that the boost won't jus go without needin the stick & I'm not the biggest fan. More carry over from jumps like other boost games would help immensely. Arcade mode could def use additions in the form of Boss Rush, the pinball minigame, & toho space shootin. GIVE ME PROPER DRIFT FOR CS AT LEAST! I got more but this already long so...
Biggest gripe: there're only four stage types in the whole damn game. If Sonic Team is going to use the same excuse that they already used in Sonic Generations, then at least they should recycle _all_ the stage types from previous games powered by the Hedgehog Engine, use all the stages from Unleashed, Generations and Forces.
Watch the Sonic fanbase actually think that these nitpicks are genuine complaints and either exasperate them in order to hate on the game, or rage at Chaomix for not saying the game is perfect.
6:44 the parry is able to be held forever unless as you said correctly your in hard mode then it lasts for around 3-4 seconds, i do think they should make it last longer the lower the difficulty but not forerver
My main gripe was the speed cap on your base speed it was really noticeable when I was running down from the top of the emerald tower on ouranos ALL I WANT IS TO BUILD UP SPEED
14:44 this was actually answered in a recent episode of Ian Flynn’s podcast the bumblekast. The end wiped out most ancients on the star falls islands and the few survivors on the islands died out within a generation. Meanwhile a group of the ancients left the starfall islands and took the chaos emeralds to the master emerald like they said they would do in one of the tower flashbacks. Those ancients made some of the ruins on angel island and eventually evolved into the chao. The game should have made this more clear as it gave off the impression that the ancient won and then just kind of vanished.
Chaomix…. Are you me? Am I you? You’re literally, every single time, the ONLY person to say the things I tell people and express or even say and think things that I think without telling people. I never hear anyone else say them until after your videos. And, of course, the fan base tends to not adopt these things until one of you POPULAR fans says it in a video. I have been calling Classic Sonic from Generations/Mania/Forces “Neo Classic Sonic” forever and finally I heard J’s Review say it so maybe people will start calling him that. lol Anyhoo, obviously, agreed with this entire list. And despite that, I still love this game.
I have to say that I hugely enjoyed this video! I also hugely have to thank Chaomix because he made me realize that some of the stuff that I thought that I was supposed to master to get better at are just flaws of the game itself. Lol I also felt pretty happy that a lot of it was also nitpicks that I personally thought of myself and wasn't alone on even though it was a very obvious nitpick. :) However, one nitpick that I do disagree on is this. I felt like Tails perfectly redeemed himself when he helped save Sonic when he got corrupted by that cyberspace stuff alongside Knuckles and Amy. He even said so himself towards Sonic as he was frozen in cyberspace that this was the perfect moment for him to showcase to Sonic what he himself can do as a hero is by saving him for once and showing that now it was his turn to save him. So to see Chaomix bring up the fact that Tails only acknowledged the fact that he is no longer a coward yet nothing came out of it surprised me because I felt like the scene where Tails saved Sonic with Knuckles and Amy was a perfect payoff of that build up of Tails saying that he no longer wanted to be a coward. So, no offense, but it makes me wonder if I missed something or if Chaomix missed something. Lol
For your nitpicks about the ancients and the end, I think the eggman logs and some in game dialogue explains this. In game Sage mentioned the ancients did not adapt well to the new world having to constantly change their architecture trying to survive. Eggman mentions them dying out within a generation after the war and we also know a small group of survivors went to angel island. The most likely theory is the damage of the war coupled with the living conditions of the planet crippled them to the point of extinction with a few from angel island evolving into the chao(in which case we could assume chaos was a devolution of sorts back into that form.) Iirc I think the emeralds were also drawn to the master emerald and therefore earth so I doubt this was their first choice for a planet. I'm also very happy we don't know much about the end yet, rule1. of eldritch beings, don't explain too much. The end is clearly being setup as a long plan villain and I want that mystery, likewise the master emerald/chaos emerald connection is also being setup, frontiers gives us some answers but also paves the way with more questions. I have a ton of theories on the next game and that's something I've never been able to say about a sonic game before, none of them have had an ending stinger and a promise of a direct sequel and I love that. Also I actually really like Amy's dialogue in game myself, its clear the game is trying to course correct and setup the characters for a new arc and Amy kinda goes through an emotional crisis in this game, it makes sense that she's not her usual bubby self and the current stakes are so bad that I feel cat&mouse with sonic is the least of things on her mind. It probably would've been better for Sonic to point out her change of tone though.
I was a little worried about these critiques, but now that I saw your video, I AGREE ENTIRELY. ...Well, almost entirely. 38 out of 40 ain't bad. 28: I vastly appreciate the writing for Amy. I think she's the second best game depiction we've had of her, next to Sonic Boom (one of the few good things from that). Her more mature interactions with Sonic are much more tolerable. Plus, I think the cat-and-mouse dynamic was replaced with more of an assertiveness or pushiness that is in line with Amy's personality. The last line of hers, telling Sonic "don't keep me waiting", feels like a girl who thinks she's already won Sonic, as well as her defense of him against Sage's words. (I also appreciate that Sonic acknowledges her ideas and hobbies with "I'll be back before you can do a fortune card reading!"--says that their relationship has evolved beyond Amy chasing Sonic with some reciprocation and not just annoyance. Not sure if this shows up in other games, but that's how I saw it here; Sonic and Amy's relationship is maturing. 33: nope nope nope we don't want to fight the cinnamon roll she is a precious bean
About the Tails nitpick, I feel like that’s kinda the point. Every character kinda has this arc about what they’re going to do /after/ this adventure is over, which can be further shown when Tails says “You’ll barely recognize me the next time you see me” or whatever to Sonic. So I dont really see it as much of an issue we just have to wait is all. Also the end says exactly what it is. Its basically something that cannot be exactly perceived, the moon form is simply a vessel.
I kinda wonder how many gameplay decisions were made because of things they saw during playtesting. Like maybe the parry did require stricter timing until they saw too many playtesters struggle with it. Imagine how frustrating it would be to watch someone never pull off a parry against Giganto.
Imagine if Sonic got so corrupted that he became a pawn for the main villain and transformed into a corrupted super form, then we had to play as Amy, Tails and Knuckles to save him.
Chaomix, everything you’ve said in this vid is exactly what I think most of our nitpicks are with this game. It is a great game, but it’s not amazing by any means. The reused islands, the janky and sometimes awful cyberspace controls, the awkward momentum and the Eldritch final boss being the fucking moon put this game from a 9.5 to a 8 or 8.25 at best. I know the developers were small and they didn’t have that much budget left near the end, but I still think we were robbed of a lot in this game. Where is that new corrupted Sonic form? Where is the snow/water Island? Why is most of Chaos Island 2D? Why is there no Sage boss fight? Why is there no spindash? Questions that we ask and all we keep hearing is “in the next game”. We do that every. fucking. time. Why can’t we focus on what we have right now. I do want to reiterate that I love Frontiers and it brought my hope and love in Sonic back after Forces crushed it, but still….. there could’ve been so much more
About "Nitpick number 22" I'm confident of the fact that during the making of the game the exploration zones were supposed to be a lot bigger. The proof is the fact that island 4 and 5 do not actually reuse assets of the 1st island...because island 4 and 5 are literally part of the 1st island. Island 4 is actually the zone above the waterfall in Kronos island, precisely it covers the north side of the full island, during the first boss fight in the first island, we're fighting in one of the huge holes of the 4th island where there will be a tower we need to climb The 4th island is literally the proof of how, sadly, this game was forced to cut content, there's a zone where there are ruins in a small lake, they look too much like a zone where you could do the usual parkour on some platforms to get a token for a character...which character? I don't know, my best theory is that it had to be Sonic. Probably the idea was about playing as Amy, Knuckles and Tails (which we might be able to play as in an update) to collect his tokens and remove the corruption from him OR MAYBE it could have been Robotnik. My guess on why content got cut is because probably there were problems on loading the objects, which is an issue that happens in the game where they just POP out of nowhere when you get closer, it might have been just for that reason. BUT THIS WAS AN EXPERIMENTAL GAME...so we can chill, this game gave good results, Lost World was an experimental too, it went badly and look at that, we never got a game similar to that one, instead I've heard Sega wants to use the open world mechanic in the future again, which is proof of how this game went really well
I think the best solution for the hit lag with the homing attack is to still have the hit lag, but you can control it by holding the joy stick in the direction you desire. So in cyber space you could hold forward on impact and shoot forward. Or hold to the side and shoot sideways. Or just don't hold a direction at all and get the hit lag to do chain attacks.
i wish the whole ‘sonic and friends having amnesia’ plotline was used since the whole idea of collecting memory tokens doesn’t rly make sense within the game we got i feel like there’s a huge chunk of the story that was scrapped last minute considering the unused dialogue
My biggest nitpick is how SLOW the UI is in this game. Wanna level up with the Elder Koco? That'll be 10 seconds. Completed a challenge to unlock more of the map? There's 20 seconds. Wanna change a setting? That's 10 seconds to just OPEN THE MENU, then once in the menu it feels super janky, then there's like 10 seconds to close the menu, so to change ONE SETTING if you're familiar with the menu it's like 40 seconds! And when you start a race to the goal challenge it pans the camera around for like 20 seconds. If they removed UI animations this problem would be SO MUCH BETTER.
My biggest nitpick for Sonic Frontiers was definitely the anticlimactic ending. SEGA was hinting before the game even got released that there *could* be another form. I was hella excited when I saw Super Sonic getting revealed. I was 100% sure that they wouldn't just reveal the Super form so early, I knew for a fact it wasn't the biggest reveal. Everyone on every platform were making their own designs for the *new* form in Sonic Frontiers. Even when we first save Amy, Sonic literally says the corrupt energy was giving him a *boost*. I was *Super* disappointed when I found out it was just Super Sonic.
What's YOUR biggest Sonic Frontiers nitpick? Let me know here in the comments!

Ikr? I found it really anticlimactic
Yeah kinda wish I knew exactly what happened to them lol kinda how a movie kills a good story at the end to finish the movie
Yeah, maybe we couldve played as like Sonic fighting the corruption kinda like Sonic.exe
game was rushed thats why

Regarding the cyber corruption storyline, I think it's possible that Amy, Tails, and Knuckles being playable characters was something planned for the original campaign. Maybe the new story content and playable characters coming in 2023 were what was originally meant to be the final island: Sonic's friends have to find the Chaos emeralds to help him fend off the cyber illness, which could've resulted in a Cyber Sonic.
It'd certainly be a lot better for Tails than him basically breaking the fourth wall and saying what me and a friend say about him being stuck on the sidelines, ever since 06. With the scene of him having a crisis of confidence kinda comes across as
Ian Flynn "I shall have have Tails have a crisis of confidence and then... I will do nothing."
Had Tails been playable, it'd certainly give off more of an emotional pay off if we actually saw him doing things and proving just exactly why Sonic counts on him. Like Sonic and Tails R did, even if it was a radio drama rather than a game, given it had a scene of Tails voicing concern about slowing Sonic down, in the Emerald quest.
I still thought it could of been possible for them to just add them to the campaign as a bonus. Maybe to further the story line
We know how each character would work within the gameplay
@@zalz I think it comes down to the time and resources they had, and it's clear Sonic Team was running short on both. Considering they are currently making other playable characters, perhaps Amy, Tails, and Knuckles were (as you said) a bonus to further the storyline, but we'll have to see when they drop the DLC next year.
@@dmk_yt hope so. Also gives hope to future games with all the characters being playable
MGR parrying is genuinely some of the most fun I’ve had in a video game
exactly, and like in mgr, if you don't time it perfectly it will just block the attack, but if you time it perfectly raiden will use a counterattack. Kinda wish it worked like that
8:12 the bar on the side is the quick cyloop charge you need to fill it and it will deplete after every use it’s not broken you just didn’t pay attention

@@SilverSpireZ nigga it’s in the move tutorial
@@RaiginAnimator does not tell you its a fill up for a meter tho
I read on twitter that a cut explanation for the end is that it’s a manifestation of one’s fear. It’s a being which has no form but rather presents itself as whatever someone fears most or something like that. Sonic’s fear is a dead planet hence why the end takes on a purple moon aesthetic. I think this is a really cool idea and wish they managed to include it somewhere
That’s actually really cool i just wish they would’ve explained that in the game though
@@EpicFailureFive wait isn’t the voice we hear a female one?
if i’m not mistaken, i believe it’s implied that the ancients didn’t “die out”, but instead evolved into what would become the chao. it’s why chaos resembles them, as he is a mutated chao, which caused his appearance to revert back to what his species looked like pre-evolution. this is really more speculation, though, since its a conclusion you have to reach yourself
One of my biggest nitpicks for this game which carries over from forces is that jumping on enemies kills your momentum, it was awful in forces and it’s awful here
A man of class, I see. Jumping on enemies is instead of homing attack them is very giga-chaddy
Yeah but at the same time it helps you to kill the heights with that super bounce glitch.
Like you do the stomp attack thing, you go so high and the only way to cancel it is with double jump because it kills it, so in a fun way it's awful but for speedruns it's good
Tbf, this is a thing even in games way back in the day. Sonic Adventure 2 had this, and it wasn't a problem. Now, for some reason, it is. :/
@@ar7hur06 yeah and games after sa2 had it where jumping on enemies doesn’t kill your momentum i.e unleashed and generations
At the very least, timing based is very likely to be the case once since you can literally defy gravity by parrying, with no consequences
You're absolutely right. When Forces came out my son was literally only just born, now he's in elementary school. This took way too long.
Or just click it and not tilt it in a direction to stop or click and tilt it in the direction you want to continue at top speed
15:00 the end is the embodiment of the end of all things (for example death). And the end can look different for everyone. For us(the audience) we see the end as a moon because in fiction the moon represents death. For sonic and sage they see something else, which is why sonic refers to the end as she while sage refers to the end as a it.
The game doesn't explain that very well, if at all. You shouldn't have to consult an external wiki in order to fully understand the story of a game.
I get what you mean in nitpick 39 but they can't just give you all the answers, the MEs correlation with the CE will be explained in the next game (probably), and the "ZAP" symbol is meant to represent the passing away, your goal being fulfilled or is the ancients symbol, Eggman states that they couldn't survive, (they couldn't adapt to the new world) a small part of them came to angel island and built sky sanctuary, then they probably evolved into chaos, with a Chao being mutated and having it's ancients genes show up, or as we know it, Chaos, the god of destruction (another thing: angel island at the time wasn't an island but a piece of land connected to west side island and south island or the mainland, with Tikal or Chaos, then lifting it up in the sky) In conclusion, this stuff is not explicitly stated in-game because they wanted the fans to discover/theorize about it
14:50 Master Emerald happened to have similar chaos energy, but was WAY bigger than all of them combined.
Being hype for the game is cool and all but the game goes nowhere if it doesn't improve.
for real, man

@@apathy2454 honestly very tired of hearing "WE WON WE WON" every time they give us the bare minimum, sometimes even less lol
I remember the game specifically saying that the difficulty options are for combat only.
Laaame
My biggest nitpick is how mindless alot of the level design in the open zone areas were. I wish the level assets were built into the environment and not hovering above it.
Sonic games used to be really good about that, but I noticed Forces has the same issue of inorganic level design.
I thought the Cyber form was gonna straight up kill Sonic the more I played it. My gripe is I feel like they should've let that moment last a bit longer. Show his friends mourning Sonic is braindead, that their isn't a way to save him, and THEN make them get the idea that maybe they can counteract the corruption Cyber energy
For the quick cyloop you actually gotta fill up the little red bar for it to work
The jump not carrying speed well
I agree with all of this, ESPECIALLY the combat nitpicks.
Damn 40 nitpicks and not one on how damn hard the game dropped the ball on that the end fight
I had the skill tree completed before finishing the first island, before seeing my first meteor shower even.
with the story related aspects you mention i feel we will find out more in the DLC and sequel. i cant wait. and im honeslty glad they are still working on the game.
My biggest problem was no way to rematch the Titans.
Sonic fans finally understands the how the AC community feels when it comes to leveling up rings from 1 to 99
In regards to the quick cyloop not working, you need to use the normal cyloop enough to fill up a meter. Once that meter is full you can use the quick cyloop. In the footage you’ve shown, the meter wasn’t filled when you tried to use it, hence it not working.
you can actually just homing attack the enemies a few times and it will fill up the meter.
Really, you just need to land attacks.
(sensitivity)
5. This isn't a debuff, because that stomp isn't supposed to be used for platforming... It is supposed to be used for combat...
27 + 33-40. This is supposed to be honest not opinion lol.
The rest are good points, and this game is not good, nor bad.
RATING: 70 - 85
ps: when the funky super bar on the right is all blue, that’s when you can use the quick cyloop
you kinda need to charge it
whoops someone commented this already 💀
@@dave9515, Idk. I've been following the game quite a bit and I've never seen any functionality of this sort documented.
8:10 actually if you look, that red bar on screen is the quick cyloop meter. you get 2 uses then you have to refill it
My problems with the drop dash are how consistently unreliable it is; more often than not you'll find that it stops Sonic in his tracks in the 2D sections of Cyberspace whenever you move the left stick in any direction, and it's even worse when going uphill.
My nitpicks are as follows:
My only nitpick is that we don't get Chaomix videos more often 😭😭
It would have been predictable, but I’m surprised you didn’t mention the final… “boss”. That was the biggest gut punch for me. I was so triggered I didn’t even finish it and just watched the final cutscenes on TH-cam.
Nah man Amy was improved so much here
Why did we lose the the chaos emeralds after we fought Knight again?
Being a og knuckles fan hate the new nick name knux
Agreed, I really liked Amy's character dynamic in this game. Previous games had her motivation as love for Sonic, but Frontiers gives her more depth and makes her more motivated by love in general. I think it's a refreshing take on her character.
What's wrong with Tails? Didn't he rescue Sonic from cyberspace with Knuckles and Amy? Doesn't that show him redeeming himself and not just acknowledging the fact that he should no longer be a coward?
15:00 the end is literally the end like the idea of it but as a physical incarnation all things eventually come to a end the only thing you can do is delay it
Even with the Nitpicks,Sonic Frontiers is a Great Game and in My Opinion is the Best Game of the Year that Won Almost Half of the Game Awards.
You don't need to capitalise every word in your sentence.
Yeah, You Need To Stop Capitalizing Every Word In Your Sentence
I hope the ongoing war don't reach here.
Why?
Meanwhile in Sonic Adventure 1 and 2, momentum is everywhere, different from the Genesis games in the sense that you have air control.
That or you could simply press L1/R1 to dodge out of the knockback animation, which is what I always did lol
Great video, Chaomix! I hope someone at Sega sees this video.
I got more but this already long so...
why do you shorten nearly every word
Biggest gripe: there're only four stage types in the whole damn game. If Sonic Team is going to use the same excuse that they already used in Sonic Generations, then at least they should recycle _all_ the stage types from previous games powered by the Hedgehog Engine, use all the stages from Unleashed, Generations and Forces.
Heads up, they did fix the light speed dash and now carries momentum in open zone, though it's not fixed in cyber space.
YES!!!!! I completely agree with everything you said about everyone’s characterization being iffy in Fromtiers and the story being wonky
Watch the Sonic fanbase actually think that these nitpicks are genuine complaints and either exasperate them in order to hate on the game, or rage at Chaomix for not saying the game is perfect.
They *are* genuine complaints, though. Just small ones.

I have been calling Classic Sonic from Generations/Mania/Forces “Neo Classic Sonic” forever and finally I heard J’s Review say it so maybe people will start calling him that. lol
Anyhoo, obviously, agreed with this entire list. And despite that, I still love this game.
Tails did do something to redeem himself when he gave himself up to save Sonic from the cyber corruption.
I have to say that I hugely enjoyed this video!
I also hugely have to thank Chaomix because he made me realize that some of the stuff that I thought that I was supposed to master to get better at are just flaws of the game itself. Lol
I also felt pretty happy that a lot of it was also nitpicks that I personally thought of myself and wasn't alone on even though it was a very obvious nitpick. :)
However, one nitpick that I do disagree on is this.
The most likely theory is the damage of the war coupled with the living conditions of the planet crippled them to the point of extinction with a few from angel island evolving into the chao(in which case we could assume chaos was a devolution of sorts back into that form.)
Iirc I think the emeralds were also drawn to the master emerald and therefore earth so I doubt this was their first choice for a planet.
Soon
I do want to reiterate that I love Frontiers and it brought my hope and love in Sonic back after Forces crushed it, but still….. there could’ve been so much more
About "Nitpick number 22"
I'm confident of the fact that during the making of the game the exploration zones were supposed to be a lot bigger. The proof is the fact that island 4 and 5 do not actually reuse assets of the 1st island...because island 4 and 5 are literally part of the 1st island.
Island 4 is actually the zone above the waterfall in Kronos island, precisely it covers the north side of the full island, during the first boss fight in the first island, we're fighting in one of the huge holes of the 4th island where there will be a tower we need to climb
The 4th island is literally the proof of how, sadly, this game was forced to cut content, there's a zone where there are ruins in a small lake, they look too much like a zone where you could do the usual parkour on some platforms to get a token for a character...which character? I don't know, my best theory is that it had to be Sonic. Probably the idea was about playing as Amy, Knuckles and Tails (which we might be able to play as in an update) to collect his tokens and remove the corruption from him OR MAYBE it could have been Robotnik.
My guess on why content got cut is because probably there were problems on loading the objects, which is an issue that happens in the game where they just POP out of nowhere when you get closer, it might have been just for that reason. BUT THIS WAS AN EXPERIMENTAL GAME...so we can chill, this game gave good results, Lost World was an experimental too, it went badly and look at that, we never got a game similar to that one, instead I've heard Sega wants to use the open world mechanic in the future again, which is proof of how this game went really well
I kind of hate how sonic loses ALL speed INSTANTLY when jumping.
At least there are a ton of mods fixing some of the problems you mentioned, what a nice modding community
i wish the whole ‘sonic and friends having amnesia’ plotline was used since the whole idea of collecting memory tokens doesn’t rly make sense within the game we got
i feel like there’s a huge chunk of the story that was scrapped last minute considering the unused dialogue
The quick cyloop doesn't work all the time because kt uses the bar right below your phantom rush gets used & it only works when the bar is blue
honestly i believe the story dlc will have something for tails to do on his own like he said he wants to do
Babe, wake up, new Chaomix video just dropped
I was *Super* disappointed when I found out it was just Super Sonic.
his jumps not carrying even the slightest bit of speed damn near ruins the whole game feel for me
