- Acura's race-winning ARX-06 hybrid GTP car sounds like it has Star Wars' Chewbacca in the exhaust pipes, so we asked HRC US president David Salters to explain the strange sounds emanating from the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship machine, and as it turns out, the answer involves horses.

I could listen to David Saulters talk about his race cars all day long. So passionate and you can just tell he absolutely loves his work. His team built the most advanced, badass GTP by far too.
That's why I absolutely love acura's gtp car. Comparatively speaking, the one with the least budget and manufacturer support yet builds the most interesting engine of them all that theoretically should be the opposite of what you want considering the regulations
He thought it made sense
@@scordatura9259 whats so unique about their engine?
@@GamezGuru1 It’s the unused 2.4L variant of HPD’s Indy V6TT modified for LMDh regs. The sister 2.2L engines are rated for 2500mi intervals in Indy series; Last year’s Rolex 24 alone saw both Acura’s cover ~2800mi. Sure it’s got lower power targets, but it was an almost entirely unproven engine, especially in the endurance sense.
HONDA ALL DAY!!! 🏎️🏁
THIS is the type of content we love - plus the genuine excitement Salters had while talking about the technology is incredible. Hilarious edit, too
I really like how natural it feels, how they talk about their technology. In Formula One is everything top secret. I am a f1 fan, but I have to admit that those GTP cars are absolutely fantastic.
The f1 channel does breakdowns of certain tech like this occasionally....
This is one of the best speaker on racecars I've ever heard, he's Knowable, excited and well spoken. Great interview. 🙂
A very sophisticated hybrid "Jake Brake"... Thats why 18 wheelers sound like that too...
Its actually a turbo anti-lag system that makes the Chewbacca noises. Modern day formula one cars make the same sound on breaking and corner entry
Ehh I'm pretty sure there's actually a mini Chewbacca in there. It's powered by an MGChew-k
@@NicholasReinten I'm familiar with anti-lag. I was under impression that engine breaking and "regenerative breaking" was being used. However, the sound mostly comes from compression breaking from the gas engine.
I hear more of an engine flutter than that destinct POP POP POP from anti-lag.
At the same time, both (and more) are definitely used. Sophisticated...
I love how despite the original comment containing the term 'Jake brake,' everyone in the replies _including the original commenter_ proceeds to use 'breaking' instead of 'braking.'
@@griffinfaulkner3514 Sorry. My bad.
Great to hear the tech breakdown. I sort of wish we could get a sequel to Marshall's tech tours that he did last year of the GTP cars. It would be cool to get some opinions on how the car have developed over the course of a year. I hope Acura can keep pushing and finding more pace with their amazing engine.
Also props to whoever edited this.. well done.
This edit is amazing and it is amazing to listen to David talk about the car to make it easier for non-technologically advanced fans to understand this. If we can have him talk for an hour that would be awesome!
I absolutely love his enthusiasm when explaining the system, thanks for teaching us!
I also love Marshall’s hilarious editing!
The Chewbacca interference was super funny everytime!
I want that HRC shirt🥲
Its an Anti lag system to keep turbo boost pressures up so there is no "turbo lag" or lack of maximum allowed boost pressure per the IMSA rules at all when full throttle is applied and the "Holding the Engine back" for traction control on corner exit is also the anti lag system making sure the engine is still receiving max boost pressure while using the electric motor as the traction control engine brake in the over all system. In passenger cars for years the physical braking system has been used for traction control along with throttle and timing control. The problem with turbo charging is that any reduction in throttle will result in loss of boost pressure with in the turbo charged system. They are simply trying to keep the engine making as much boost as possible for the scenario and max boost allowed the whole time by IMSA rules so the vehicle accelerates as fast as possible off the corner. For comparison, the Cadillac GTP doesn't make funny sounds entering or exiting corners because its not turbo charged. The Ford GT in the old GTLM class made funny noises too because of the same reasons, it had a Turbo charged engine. While the GTLM Ford GT was nothing like the modern GTP class, the turbo charged engines in racing have always had one draw back, loss of boost pressure in corners. Technology from Racing has evolved in ways to over come this issue and the anti lag systems has even become available in some High end Super / Sports cars today, and available after market as standing / rolling anti lag.
"Magic" was the official answer that HPD was giving all of last season...cool to get a detailed explanation of the tech now that the cars are a year old and GTP is starting to mature.
So they're basically using the MGU as an engine brake, and then also using it as a sort of anti-lag to help the turbos build boost
That's hilarious.
Never heard something so technical and so funny at the same time.
Thank you to all of you.
Great interview! F1 should be like this! We see that they enjoy to race and even share this information is funny and entertaining
They literally have a Tech Talk segment that does this exact thing
On top of what MotownModels says most teams also do their own stuff. James Allison for example explained a lot about the Merc power unit.
I absolutely love this. IMSA you guys are killing it with the coverage leading up to the season!!
Yep and it's not the typical hype hoopla, it's actual good tech information for all the different cars. This is why I love constructors series instead of spec series!
"iv been doing this a while, thats definitely an engine"
I love how open he is. I’m also a fan of F1 and I would love to see this level of openness about their tech
Real enthusiast. Perfect for the role. We need this, we need it.
That was the best description I’ve heard for a while anyone could understand this and love the character that David is
Acura ARX-06 "Chewbacca" it's a very good nickname 😍
Absolutely brilliant commentary. Thank you
Amazing they actually do. Love the IMSA videos.
the little chewbacca edits throughout are incredible, thank you
The sound bites are hilarious! Well done!
Sounds like blown diffuser
Its very similar to what honda is doing with their f1 engines
Ohh it sounded like the Honda F1 engine, lovely!!
So it has a Jake Brake on it for the first part then all the traction control and everything else. Nice simple explanation.
Please, please can someone enter one of these Acuras into WEC?!
Tremendous insight on this 🙌
The ARX-06s need to prove themselves in the WEC Hypercar class as well as GTP
Great video 💯 Mr. Saulters explained it perfectly 🔥🔥
more of these videos please!
Hell yes - love videos like this! Fun and you get to learn something new. Keep it up, IMSA
That was some great content. Loved the editing and both David and Marshall are awesome. :)
i love this approach - the BMW GT M8 some years ago had next to no cool sound on full throttle - but sounded great when going of throttle - exactly like a podracer - so is ANTI LAG = Pro Starwars ?)
That was cool. Thanks for sharing
Thanks for the lesson and the entertainment! The more you know...
Love the passion!
Love this, love the passion and technical insights. More more more!
Man. Love this guys enthusiasm.
Outstanding. Period. Love this tech and the obvious joy that he shared with us.
Yo where did such creative editing came from? I loved this
5:08 perfectly placed chewbacca noise
I was always curious about how it works and amused by that sound
I don't know if the Acura is my favorite GTP, but I always thought it was the coolest sounding. Thanks, Broughy's dad.
Lovely stuff!!!!
That was awesome! Thanks.
That had to be the best and no b/s explanation ever…very entertaining 😂
the editor diffidently had fun on this one. love these episodes.
Chewbacca: Why, is there a race car that sounds like me?
Sounds kinda like a blown diffuser! Love it!
Ha! I joked with my son about this at the roar before the 24 over the weekend!! We noticed that only the acuras made this sound. I thought maybe it could be some sort of braking regen.. since Honda has regenerative braking but wasn't absolutely sure....thank you for doing a tech breakdown on this! Awesome stuff!!
Nice explanation!
Off the charts cool
For me this is the most successful and promissor GTP all the time 🤩
I love it ❤
So its an anti lag system as well as a jake brake in addition to traction controll. Nice, the koenisegg jesko and i believe some ageras( i know the one:1 for sure) has an extremely sophisticated traction control system where it sounds like a semi auto rile going off.
Good to see hrc using all the different drive train components and technologies to make the car as fast as possible
I am sure there was a more complicated way to make the sound, but they have probably not found it yet. Working on it.
Chewbaca? More like a race to the loo after eating too many black bean tacos, or a semi’s Jake Brake.
That interview was a hoot!
Marshall is IMSA's own Chewbacca
Awesome content and I will definitely keep it all secret 😂
Leave it to IMSA to introduce the "Jake Brake" to auto racing
That one was good thanks
Awesome
What an awesome video! Thanks to David Salters, and HRC US for this!
Will we see a Chewbacca livery this season? 😂
I loke those odds
Nice one Salty!
I noticed the Acuras last year at Indy making this same noise.
This is the BEST racing video I have ever seen! Thank You MP!!!
I thought that was Eddie Jordan in the thumbnail LMAO
He most likely talking about what’s known as a Jake brake and then also anti-lag
I need onboard footage…
So it’s the Force. Got it.
SkySports never realise to ask this question. But this V6 noise not new it already have it since F1 Mclaren Honda 2015 until now Redbull but not as loud as before.
Oh shit they sound like the 2010 red bull i think might be doing something like that with the air stalling.
That collar around the driveshaft at 4:34 - is that a torque meter?
So what I gather is that the drivers can control how much engine braking the car does (like on an F1 car) and that influences how much of the Chewbacca sound it makes. Am I wrong?
Brilliant!
Was there ever an explanation of the odd onboard noise that the Ford GT GTLM cars made?
No technical explaination that I can remember, but it was always assumed to be the turbo anti-lag system.
Might have been the air compressor for the gear shifting mechanism as they are operated by compressed air solenoids.
Makes sense to me but I'm glad my NSX doesn't sound like that.
What a fun explanation...so good!
"On why we ended up with Mr. Chewbacca in the car." First and most importantly how did he fit? Lots of seat adjustments I assume. I mean you spoiled the surprise for the 24. Having Bronze level driver Chewbacca participate putting in some drive time would of been epic.

Chewbacca was played by an ex Aussie NBL player who loved around the corner from me
had a fall from grace after being caught with drugs
David What a brilliant way to explain this. In the comedy factor of course. But most importantly I kinda understand the system better now
Love Star Wars and IMSA… but this is reaching
And I'm here thinking it was using blown diffuser like F1 cars
This has nothing on VW's VR6 engine. That's Daddy Chewbacca..
The ARX-06 must be a Baby-Chewbacca 🤔
The original wookie
Pilot and Traction Control Fighting to death controlling the engines, brakes... -People: It's Chewwie !!!!!
Mclaren Honda F1 (2015): Way aheada ya
Awesome
This video is better if you play it at 2X speed. Saves time, too.
Amazing 🫡🤭
I want to work for that guy.
The employee who came up with the idea to start posting videos like this trying to reach a new crowd deserves a raise.
I absolutely love the Acura Arx-06 it looks so sexyyyy
@marshall pruett this is click bait if you've ever experienced a VR6 with a proper exhaust... Or heck, even with a straight pipe... And here I thought I was going to hear a VR in a Honda😅
He seriously does look a bit like Peter Mayhew
