It's really interesting to get your perspective on these lighting styles as a photographer. I would say that the broad lighting is creating depth and not widening the face. If you were to take the same image and illuminate the whole face you would in fact make it wider because they entire face is visible.

Chiaroscuro: an effect of contrasted light and shadow created by light falling unevenly or from a particular direction on something.
