I too set up and launch from a rocky beach, and I do most of the same things you do, including the use of a buoy and anchor, etc. As to what to do with the car key, I find it most convenient just to keep one tied to my PFD. And as far as head protection is concerned, I wear a hockey helmet with metal face guard; foil boards do occasionally flip, and eating a foil could wreck your day 😢
Thanks for the added suggestions! How I wish my key fob came with a removable valet key thingy :/ Yes, initially I was keeping mine in a double ziplock baggie, which would probably work just fine today but not so much when I was initially learning and spending as much time in the drink as out of it. Did that one or two sessions too often and it ended up totally flooding my key fob ($500 to replace, no thanks). Hockey mask, I love it! I haven't tasted my foil yet (knock on carbon) but I know one or two dudes who have. Yep, for what you'd spend on the corrective orthodontia work, you could buy a whole brand new foil setup!
Fantastic practical tips, sir! Our venues are radically different, I'm in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, but I can definitely use some of your wisdom to make my wingfoiling easier. Much respect, we seem to share common a philosophy towards water fun.
Appreciate it, Highrocker!! Well, your venue will seem a lot more appealing to me in another 2 months lol Hopefully, some of our seemingly odd practices will be something you can use or adapt to winging in beautiful BC! Let us know if you ever come down here during the Winter and we'll get out :D
Anchor is also good for clipping my wing (flipped over). I have a 5L water bottle with a hose attachment and hand pressure pump I use for spraying sand off my wetsuit booties and board.
Thanks, Jake! Yes, I'll sometimes anchor the wing off, too, but I usually like to just flip the board over when I'm taking a break or getting ready (or ready to break everything down), and so the idea of the wing (even flipped over) so close to the foil weirds me out a bit. Weird stuff happens with the wind, as you know! Love the bottle with hose idea, though. Really inspired. I'm definitely stealing that one haha!
