  • The Amazing Spider-Man movies are known for being a mess behind the scenes and not living up to the legacy of the Sam Raimi / Tobey Maguire Spider-Man series.
While it may be a series with it's fair share of problems, it's also a series that had a bunch of -- for lack of a better word -- amazing moments.
So in preparing for the upcoming Spider-Man : No Way Home , we're going to go into the Spiderverse and check out Marc Webb 's 2 Spiderman films.
Let's find out what made The Amazing Spider Man SO Amazing.

There's an interesting thing I've seen someone point out how Garfield's Peter is actualy a lot closer to the comics in terms of characterisation than the other two versions. The Reimi and MCU films both turn Peter into an aww shucks loveable doofas. As oppose to the Peter of the comics who was a snarky jerk with a bit of a temper. Which is an aspect of the character The Amazing films got down.

Also I remember reading that Stan Lee imagined Peter as a good looking nerd. He was a nerd, but he looked alright. Not necessarily punchable, but what made him the butt of his classmates’ jokes was his behaviour more than his looks. I think Andrew nailed both Peter and Spidey. He was/is really living his dream.

Andrew is thin and average, but still handsome (he's not some modelesque guy). It's essentially how Peter was drawn in the Ditko era. And you're right! He was a loner who was snarky and antisocial from the earliest page, it's why Flash and he didn't get along because Peter would snark at him even when Flash and his friends were asking him if he wanted to hang out with him. I love the Raimi movies, but the Raimi Peter WAS definitely given the personality of a lovable goofball, which wasn't exactly how he was in the comics (I give it a pass cause the movies were more lighthearted and him being so pure worked because it balanced it so well with having him also be a man whose responsibilities were weighing on him). And the MCU version is basically distilling his personality into "little cutie-pie" cause literally every line he says is meant to make you think of him as the wide-eyed innocent. That's literally what they want you to see him as and it doesn't exactly read MAN to me, it reads CHILD.

See the reason I like the idea of this “Spider-Man out for revenge” is because in the context of this version of Spider-Man, he never really got that “with great power comes great responsibility” speech in the same way Toby did. When Ben spoke to Peter, Peter was angry, he wasn’t listening and never really had the chance to process Ben’s words, so when Ben died and his killer was never found he pointed his anger in finding Ben’s killer. Its not until the bridge scene that he realizes that his powers can be used for a greater purpose rather than benefiting himself and it’s a logical leap in the context of this universe, that isn’t too far off from what happened in the Raimi movies or the comics, the arc is just changed from happening in the course of one night into spanning weeks, either way, both arcs show us that this is when, where and why he really chooses to become Spider-Man.

Something about Andrews performance as Peter Parker that I have to say is that it was definitely based off of the Ultimate Comics (as well as the overall story in general). That comic run worked to modernize the story of Spider-man to the modern day, and many aspects of those comics were adapted to these movies. Peter in this TASM couldn't be bullied for being a nerd because that hasn't been where most bullying comes from for a while by the time this movie came out. Having good grades no longer ostracized someone, so they needed to find a way to isolate Peter from others. So in this case, Peter is an outsider to others because he has some poor social skills, as well as having abandonment issues due to his parents leaving. No matter how good looking he is, no matter if his hair is styled and looks cool, no matter how popular you expect him to be just by appearance, he's still going to have those issues that isolates him from others.
On another topic regarding his skateboard, it does make some sense when you think about it. It's a cheap mode of transportation that's light and can be kept on him at all times (in case someone tries to steal it while he isn't looking). In the Coldplay scene, it makes some sense that he would start testing out his powers in different ways, including his skateboard. He could probably never do an Ollie or any tricks in general before the spider bite, so he experiments with his newfound abilities with familiar things.
In regards to the initial quest for vengeance, personally, I think it does check out as a Spider-man arc, because he isn't actually Spider-man yet. He has the costume, but in the same sense that he has the powers, he has everything there that can make him Spider-man, he's just missing that one piece that finishes the puzzle. In the typical origin, it's realizing his inaction against the thief was what got Uncle Ben killed, in TASM, it's that with just a hint of selfless values for helping others. After Ben is killed, it makes sense that selfless heroism isn't the first thing that comes to mind, all he's got going in his head is guilt and anger. And he genuinely believes hunting down this specific criminal counts as heroism, that it fulfills his dad's philosophy. But it isn't until he gets a reality check from Captain Stacy that he begins to think about what it is he's actually doing. And when he saves Jack he fully realizes just what he can become, what he can choose to be. At that moment, he truly *becomes* Spider-man.

      1. Why would Raimi's version factor into what is essentially the character? To made it simple for you, find a video of Stan Lee talking to John Romita Sr. about SM, listen to how he describes the character, and walk off in shame. 2. No, it really doesn't, since I don't remember any skateboards in the comics Stan Lee wrote. I do remember Peter Parker working as a photographer for Daily Bugle trying to make some money to take care of himself and his aunt. Which doesn't really apply to Monsuier "I've never made a movie half as good as Evil Dead; I only make snotty dramedies" Webb. 3. Peter Parker wasn't "flirty" till he went into college. And flirty he was with his girlfriends, not random chicks. Witty? Tobey's Parker got the best joke in any capeshit, "Did your husband gave this to you?" Bodybag for Webb's PC Spidey right there. Angry? I suppose "Then stop pretending to be", or him almost killing the guy who murdered Uncle Ben, or him going after Goblin at the end, wasn't "angry". He should've had skateboard for that to be angry enough, I guess. Decently attractive? Are you saying Tobey Maguire isn't attractive? Then again, I'm a straight guy, so I don't really pay attention to how "decently attractive" my capeshit actors are, but I think a lot of women wouldn't mind letting him smash.
So, all in all, bad faith arguments all around.

Even when he is with Mary-Jane, you can tell he still loves Gwen with all of his heart and if she had never died he would have married her. In fact in The House of M where Wanda gave people the life they wanted, Gwen never died, Peter married her, and they have a child together. Peter also has a tough time with wanting things to go back to normal because it would mean going back to a world where Gwen is dead.

I don't think the 616 comics ever made the romance work after Gwen's death. He and Gwen weren't written perfectly but I liked that she loved him for who he was as Peter and had things in common with him and the chemistry they had was cute. Had the writers allowed her to branch out of the "Kept in the dark love interest" role, it would have been a bold move rather than just killing her since she didn't get an opportunity to evolve past the role. After she died they thrust MJ into Gwen's role and the awkwardness never truly left. Frankly, the fact that Peter didn't chose MJ before Gwen died and they only got together through mutually grieving Gwen's death is just not very romantic. It's always going to put a damper on the relationship and it makes it SO bizarre when writers try to have Peter say, "You know MJ's my truest love," cause this is always going to exist in a world where he caused Gwen's death and feels like the writer forgetting that he has complex feelings for Gwen, a girl he lost at the height of his love for her and whose death wouldn't have happened had she not known him.
The writers also had to kind of overhaul MJ's traits since she was intentionally characterized as the shallow, thoughtless Veronica Lodge type for her early years (she was INTENTIONALLY written to be callous to Gwen and Harry in the early years) to make MJ the Betty Cooper-esque good girl Gwen Stacy embodied. THEN later they have her say she knew Peter was Spidey all along and that retcon just further made the idea of the relationship as a "romance" feel weird since she kept it from him. Her entire relationship with him feels like a hodgepodge of too many cooks.
It's why I prefer other interpretations which have the fortune of being written with prior works to take inspiration from. For all it's stumbles, I think the Raimi MJ comes off as fully realized from the start by Raimi and Kirsten. She's a girl who is from an abusive household who tries her best to be happy and not show her vulnerability. Peter loves her early on and sees that she's a sweet person. She's flawed and the relationship isn't perfect but it still feels like one I can say I root for and see the romance in more so than the comics.

Like for consistency imagine if they had the Vulture (played by Ed Harris perhaps) who wants to take it to Norman Osborn like spectacular Spider-man in terms of reasoning but also for revenge for the murder of his best friend Richard Parker. I LOVE the arc in the first film. The fact that he starts off wanting revenge is COMPLETELY ACCURATE TO HIS FIRST APPEARANCE! Let’s not forget that in his debut, Peter Parker was an asshole with a giant chip on his shoulder. He also became Spider-Man for very selfish means. Him finally becoming a hero on the bridge scene is 100% in keeping with his character. And anyone that says it doesn’t seem like Spider-Man is just wrong. Because that is exactly what Spider-Man was in his comic origin. He wanted vengeance. And learned later on that being a hero is what Ben would have wanted. I think people who say his arc is unfaithful in this movie really aren’t the true fans they claim to be.

Still to this day my favorite Spidey film is ASM 1. Garfield was made for the role. His sarcasm was perfect. His athleticism really made him seem like he had the agility of the comics and behaving like an actual spider was just great. Him using the webs to "sense his prey" and crawling all over Lizard as he webs him is just so incredibly cool and spidery. I have watched many, many classic and modern romance movies and Garfield and Stone's relationship on screen here is arguably in the talks for the greatest on screen couple ever.
All these things aside though, the scene where Spidey saves the child in the hanging SUV is the most perfect encapsulation of Spider-Man's character ever put to film. Every single time i watch it, it moves me.

You liked the "You're a fraud, Spider-Man!" scene? I didn't. Harry's intelligence is so inconsistent in the film. One moment he magically forgets that he has billions and a team of world class geneticists who could process the blood into a cure, and the next, he's instantly able to master the armour, yet we don't know (without the deleted scene) why he actually wants it. And then the Green Goblin was a f*cking disaster. I say that they should have gone all the way and made him a hulking goblin beast, not that disgusting halfway excuse for a design we got. And have him look through the records to find out that the spiders were bonded to Richard Parker's DNA, and that's how he discovers Peter's secret identity.

I know it doesn't exist, but if there was a cut of TASM 2 where Peter finally saved Gwen from falling to her death it would've been incredibly cathartic and beautiful cause the scene of him attempting to save her was gorgeously executed. I think the reason they never made a 3rd TASM movie was because the 2nd movie ended in tragedy. Good as the movie was, the audience is not going to feel satisfied leaving the theater feeling upset. The audiences loved the chemistry and the movie's take on Gwen. The fact that the audience had only a brief montage to get over the heartbreak was jarring. If the death scene happened in the middle of a 3rd movie where the Green Goblin gets full focus MAYBE but at the tail end of a 2nd movie in a franchise where Electro is the primary threat was pushing it. Personally, I don't think Gwen has to die in versions of Spider-man anymore cause it leaves Gwen to be less explored when she's a character who can work well without being set up to die.

Him donning the suit to go after Uncle Ben's killer is something I totally get why people have an issue with. However, in the original comics, he got the suit as his uniform when he started taking on wrestling to make money. So, in both instances, he suited up for selfish reasons. Also, in the Tobey movies, he used his makeshift suit to go after his uncle's killer as well. Still understand why people can have issues with it, but to me it's not too far off from the character

I always saw this peter as an Ultimate Spider-Man peter where he isnt a 90's nerd who keeps getting bullied for being so but instead he's just socially awkward, and it's definitely realistic to assume that he's bullied because of it. You don't get popular off of just looking good especially if you can barely form casual conversation
Also on the point of the revenge story, it's a core paert to the character and origin of Spider-man, especially in these movies. Toby did it for about half the movie as well, but especially here, it works. This is peter's lesson learned in a realistic way, someone tried to tell him before but he was angry and ignorant and it isn't until a dinner with Gwen's father and when he is put into a situation where he could either catch the giant lizard or save the kid stuck in a car. And it's no coincidence that these scenes come one after another. Until he eventually realizes who he is and what he wants to do with his power

Spider-Man in the 1990’s show starts for greed and then revenge in the various flashbacks. I have always believed that was a solid and realistic ark for a teenager given such great power. Before the tragedy of losing his uncle Ben, Peter didn’t know to direct that great power toward something unselfish and greater than himself.
This origin completely works for me. Garfield was and is my favorite Spider-Man and still a solid Peter Parker. Garfield was just in an overstuffed movie run by an overzealous production company trying to jumpstart a shared universe.

I really love Peter’s arc in the first movie. The way I see it, and the way I believe the movie did it, is that Peter doesn’t become Spider-Man until after saving the boy in the bridge. Because that is the first time he is called Spider-Man. It feels more natural to me because of how grief often blinds you. And I believe Peter was blinded by the grief to release what Ben would’ve wanted. And didn’t see that until he actually saved a life.
I also like how Peter is. Because I can relate a lot to him. Peter is smart but doesn’t show it to everyone. I wasn’t at the same level in High School but I didn’t show the intelligence I had. Peter is more or less and outsider because he is socially awkward which I can relate to. It was often the same for me. Personally, Peter is made really well with the same idea but a new execution to make it feel fresh

I feel like it's worth mentioning that Peter in his high school years under the pen of Steve Ditko WAS a lot like Andrew's portrayal. He wasn't ever an ugly guy, he was plain and on the skinny side but still handsome. Andrew's a very average looking guy and his take on Peter was shown to be a loner who doesn't socialize, but has a smart-mouth. His snark is why Flash and he clashed. It suits the movie version of him. Giving him a "stands up to bullies" side before being bit by the spider is also nice cause it shows that before he becomes strong he hates to see the strong attack the vulnerable. He works well as Peter Parker AND Spider-man, people just want to say he wasn't to play it off like the MCU version does something better than either of the versions that came before it when in reality the MCU version is the least like the comics in every single way. The Raimi version is more Romita era than Ditko but it was also very comic accurate with the money issues and college era love triangle and the Green Goblin narrative. What does the MCU version have that has anything in common with the comics by comparison?
And while I'm on a tangent, the Raimi MJ was pretty comic accurate to MJ too. The abusive home life, the fact that she acts like she's a happy girl to the world but is secretly very insecure and a hopeless romantic. I guess people whine that the left out the way the comicbook version showed up acting like a haughty little number yelling, "Face it Tiger, you just hit the jackpot!" but being real here: Would anyone want THAT to be the woman a hero ends up with? A lady who announces that she's out of his league and thinks of herself as a total hottie? Raimi distilled the best aspects of MJ's backstory and made her relatable. She made mistakes but she does love Peter and I feel like it goes unappreciated.

No, Rami set out to assassinate the character of MJ. He hit all the same story beats, but he missed the heart of the character as without her knowing from the very beginning that Peter is Spider-Man without him knowing is a key aspect of her character as it explains why she was okay with him always ditching her she was able to play it off like she just didn't really care she was just dating casually but deep down she knew it was because Peter had to go be a hero. Well I love that line it doesn't really work without doing the whole oh Peter doesn't want to meet her bit

@@kingjonstarkgeryan8573 Honestly, I appreciate what they tried to do with the "I've ALWAYS known" retcon because it is a compelling idea had it been planned all along, but to me it really felt like the comics had it as such a late-in-the-game retcon that asks you to bear with a lot of inconsistent things going on with the logic of her keeping it from him and I think people ended up doing that cause it ultimately fast-tracks things. I personally like the idea but not the execution, but it's not really something that could be pulled off when that many writers didn't have that intent all along.
Sam Raimi's MJ not knowing the secret identity is the primary difference and it is an interesting one to speculate on why they decided to omit it. Personally, I wonder if it's cause the retcon was in a comic after the run that Raimi had the most fond memories of reading as a boy. Plus it makes the big reveal when he does tell her feel like it matters cause HE lets her in on his secret with a big coming out moment. When you think about it logically it should really be epic when a hero finally lets their true love see them for who they truly are.

Hold on? Who says Peter Parker is ugly/unattractive?
Sure, geeky before he gets bitten. Glasses, socially awkward and unsure of himself but I don't think being 'unattractive' is a prerequisite of a Peter Parker. Even ditko didn't draw him as ugly. His Peter was just a bit of a straight laced square with John Lennon glasess
Also I wonder how Tom Holland falls into that theory.....

You know it sucks that they wouldn't let him do the third Spider-Man, knowing how passionate he was playing Spider-Man. I know he was sick the day they wanted to announce it, but sickness is common when you do travel. I really wish they would have understood and still let him do the third movie. I would have done a bigger series with Andrew. I'm proud of him for doing the two he did.

Man you've got to go back and read the '60s Spider-Man comics, that out for revenge and selfish intentions stuff is all over his original origin, he learns to be more selfless and he's shaped into the Spider-Man we know now.

Personally, I love these movies, and despite their flaws, they capture the character the most accurately IMO. I'm going to copy and paste other comments that explain why I love these movies really well lol:
    - There's an interesting thing I've seen someone point out how Garfield's Peter is actually a lot closer to the comics in terms of characterization than the other two versions. The Raimi and MCU films both turn Peter into an 'aww shucks lovable doofas' (Raimi does this to a really severe, annoying extent IMO). As opposed to the Peter of the comics who was a snarky jerk with a bit of a temper. Which is an aspect of the character The Amazing films got down. Another thing from the Raimi trilogy people wrongly attribute to being at the heart of the character, Peter Parker was not always the sweet hearted dork who does good right away. Before the bite he was a jerk, and even after, he had plenty of developing to do as a person. He's not a saint before the powers, and he's not a hero as soon as he gets them, either.
    - I LOVE the arc in the first film.
    - In regards to the initial quest for vengeance, personally, I think it does check out as a Spider-man arc, because he isn't actually Spider-man yet. At that moment, he truly becomes Spider-man.
    - I really wish people would stop saying "Andrew was too good looking to be Peter Parker". It's so old and tired, and I thought we'd all collectively realized in hindsight how wrong this is. Peter Parker was always good looking, or at the least not particularly unattractive. But he was a nerd and a social outcast, and a jerk at that. That's why when he actually tries he ends up with women like Gwen and MJ, and all the others. We only think Peter Parker shouldn't be super good looking because of Tobey Maguire. Just one of many things that came from the Raimi trilogy that people wrongly associate with the long history of the character.
as in his comic origin. He wanted vengeance. And learned later on that being a hero is what Ben would have wanted.

The best thing about TASM films is they show that Spiderman really isn't Superman. Spidey getting shot, the cranes being moved so he can swing, his webbing having limits, not being able to catch Gwen, the fact that he was never able to beat the Lizard (he never did, he was just able to switch out the chemical in the dispenser, not actually beat Lizard in a fight). He has super powers, but they have their limits.
