Snow Turned Into Clear Sheet Of Ice By A Hydraulic Press

  • In this video I crush snow in my hydraulic press in order to turn it into a continuous piece of clear ice. This snow is just frozen water. But water from a lake or anywhere is a bit different than most other substances. It has the interesting property that if you increase the pressure when it is solid then it can turn back into a liquid. So I show you an example of this with a wire and an ice cube that is often used in textbooks. Although this is probably not a good example because the wire doesn't have high enough pressure to affect it.

This is actually how glaciers are formed. The snow's own weight compresses the lower layers into solid ice. It's nice to see a practical demonstration of that.

You obviously don’t live in a snowy state! After we get a snow fall, the untreated sidewalks and stairs turns to ice because of all the foot traffic. The pressure from this continuous flow causes the snow to compact and turn into ice.

um it actually is becouse under heaps of pressure the ice articles in snow fuse together to form a large solide peice of ice.and in the copper wire and ice cube expriment the preasure was melting it and it was refreezing but also the cube was melting from the room temperature, if you do it in a below 0 degrees place it'll work better

Why would the heat of the wire melt the ice? The temperature of the wire should reach equilibrium with the temperature of the ice after a short period of time, and unless the ice is warm enough to melt itself, that's not going to leave the wire warm enough to melt through the ice. Jeez, don't you thermodynamics?

  • @charlesme2

  • @ripsaw26

If it really was changing state to a liquid under the pressure then you should be able to push the two faces of the press right up against each other and all of the water should have seeped out as a liquid. Right?
