I remember the first time I saw the movie Kids and heard this song at the end. It was the first time a song hit a certain feeling I could never explain. It’s the feeling of being a kid with a rough life but desperately trying to run from it by just acting like everything’s fine and running around with teenagers your own age. You feel such relief that right now, you are ok, and maybe even having fun… but there’s the impending fear that this positive feeling will probably be ripped away before you wake up the next morning, either by someone else or by your own mind. There’s also a feeling of disconnect from your peers who couldn’t possibly understand. Maybe a little bit of bitterness though you wouldn’t want them to actually understand if it meant they were dealing with the same wounds. This song took me right back to that place (though I was only a few years out of high school when I found it in a used movie bin), and it still does. Such complicated and conflicting emotions, but sometimes your mind just needs to remember those feelings.
If you are wondering how to play this, I took the liberty of learning the song by ear. On standard tuning, the chords are A, D, Bm, E. (Bm is played with second fret barred and play as if you play Am) 8 counts for each chord. Glad I could help!
you've never been so wrong...jk. I figured that out too, they have the chords and tunings on one of their sites. Can't remember which one but they have 'em. Thanks.
there's a guy on ultimate guitar (renato l.) whose posted a version as far as i can tell pretty much nails it... there's a bit of retuning involved but its so lovely to hear those chords coming out of your own guitar, my thanks to him and to Lou B. of course for this devastating and stunning song that never fails to reach me wherever i am and remind me that there are deeper places and feelings to life... and more again to learn. Btw - tuning as per is E A D F# A C# give it a spin!!

Jesus, this song encapsulates youth so well. Even though i was not a wild kid in a conventional sense, i was curious about sex, hungry for it and scared of it as a teenager. Experimentation with sex, drugs, relationships and just being a wide eyed kid, and being wet behind the ears. Sometimes i wish i can start over and take more chances in my youth instead of being imprisoned with fear. Oh well, time to move on...

That’s my take. I’m not sure what generation you are I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about how my generation (90s kids/gen y) pretty much raised ourselves, and then sort of got blamed for not bowing things that our parents were actually taught. The ‘sick inside, there’s nothing wrong’ hits me pretty deep. I was a chronically I’ll child who was left alone a lot, and encountered some situations I was not ready for at 10, but I spent my teen years pretending I was physically and emotionally fine, just so I could try and have a few moments of wave with my peers. This song will always remind me of the feelings I had over that.

This song has such a weird, deep, melancholy vibe to it. I can’t explain how it makes me feel. Nostalgia forsure but something deeper.
You capture the unsayable quality of it. It is close to nostalgia, but it isn’t, and there is sadness there.
