One of my very favorite Christmas songs but although I’m a bit of a Beatles freak but I absolutely despise Paul McCartney‘s Christmas song! Same words over and over and over. Yuck! This one is just gorgeous! Thank you great reaction!!
I am a big McCartney fan but "Wonderful Christmastime" is dull and stupid. It couldn't have taken 5 minutes to write. Paul COULD write a great holiday song but that was just a throwaway. "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)" becomes more and more a classic every year.
@@Mainecoonlady. I think for many years Paul was probably intimidated by "Happy Xmas" and didn't want to try to do an emotional heartwarming Christmas song, so he just let the diddly piffle of "Wonderful Christmastime" stand as his holiday song.
My Dad has since this song came out, played this song as the first Christmas song every Christmas Day. So much so, I'd call it a tradition in my household.
Yoko is singing backup. Sounding good as well. War is over was a campaign in 1971 in Times Square. Big billboard they rented❤️ will never forget that. During the Vietnam War🥲
In NYC , in the 70s there were these black and white billboards throughout Manhattan that said " War is Over if you Want It" Love John and Yoko. He had us thinking so young. We were in awe. Vietnam was taking so many young men and women and children .There will never be another. The irony that he was violently assassinated was not missed by any of us. Our dear John. Jyst 40 yrs old for 2 months. So young. We were so blessed to have his messages, his guidance his brilliance his humor his courage. Thank you for playing this
The Viet Nam war was raging. This song coincided with a huge campaign in several major cities. Huge billboards saying..." Happy Christmas. War Is Over!" (If you want it. Love John & Yoko)
Ima Me I think he'd be particularly baffled by the cancel culture, he was often in the position of being potentially cancelled. I like to think he'd be on JK Rowling who is being beset by awful neigh-sayers atvthis time.
John Lennon wanted peace for Christmas and EVERYTHING. His entire public life was devoted to peace, war protest, civil rights and equality. Personally he struggled, as we all do, but he was the bright light to my generation. Only the good die young.
Happy Christmas, kyoko (Kyoko Chan Cox is the daughter of the Japanese multimedia artist and singer, Yoko Ono.) Happy Christmas,Julian (Julian Charles John Lennon is an English singer, songwriter, photographer, filmmaker, author, and philanthropist. He is the son of Beatles member John Lennon and his first wife, Cynthia, and he is named after his paternal grandmother, Julia Lennon. )
I think the disjointed sounds in Paul's song are cool, and he of course makes a great melody, but it isn't recognizable as traditionally Christmassy, even with jingle bells.
This song was plaguerized from the song Stew- ball. I never cared for Yoko's vocals on anything. I prefer Paul's original song. Much better melody but John was a Martyr so most people idolize him way too much. He was a terrible husband to his first wife Cynthia and an absentee father to Julian. He had a violent temper when he drank too much and was a heroin addict until a year before he tragically was murdered. He was not such a peacenik in his personal life.
I think the Paul song is melodically much better than John's plaguerized song. Check out Stewball by Peter Paul and Mary. Paul actually did the work and wrote his song. I also am not a big fan of Yoko's vocals. Sounds like a cat got stuck in a shredder. Sorry.☹️🎅🌲⛄💟🕊️
I remember when this song came out in 1971, I was 11 yrs old but LOVED this song SO MUCH. The song (from John Lennon & Yoko Ono) was about Americas involvement with the Vietnam war, with Harlem Community Choir also. I really love John Lennon (I'm from Liverpool), & adore this song & shall NEVER forget it!! xx
Please watch the other video to this Jay, it is live & you’ll see all the people in the background joining in, a true Christmas classic… All the best to you & your family for the festive too!
Poor John shot in front of his wife Yoko just weeks before Xmas. I’m sometimes so ashamed to be an American. Our society is so violent. You might say that I’m a dreamer….. hope the world will live as one 😎
I envied you for a moment hearing this for the first time. I was around when it was released and had wait for it to be imported from the US. The bonus was it was on see through green vinyl. I still have it.
This is a beautiful song. To this day, it makes me cry because John Lennon was murdered right before Christmas 41 years ago (one of the worst days of my life). The line, “And so this is Christmas and what have you done?” Seemed to speak to his evil killer. It’s still a lovely song in spite of the awful association it causes in my mind. John and Yoko actually rented a huge billboard in Times Square with “Happy Christmas War is Over if you want it” in huge letters when this song was released in 1971. Rest in peace to John’s sweet soul. 😇🎄
This is my one of mt all-time favourite Christmas songs. The message is beautiful, I just wish that people would remember to message all year round. "And so this is Christmas, and what have you done, another year over & a new one just begun" It really makes you think, what have you done for others? Carol of the Bells is my favourite Christmas song, listening to it just gives you chills
At the beginning, John is saying, "Happy Christmas, Julian" to his son and Yoko is saying, "Happy Christmas, Kyoto" to her daughter. And George Harrison has a New Year's song, 'Ding Dong'. This is the Harlem Community Choir. And...JV - This was at the height of the VIETNAM WAR!!! 1971, so yes, there was a war going on, one that had already taken tens of thousands of lives and needed to be stopped. This message was especially needed then. Just like now.
As a teen I was in love with the Beatles but was still learning their catalog. Never listened to their solo stuff. Heard a generic cover of this playing over the speakers at a mall and thought it was the best Christmas song I’ve ever heard. Only later learning it was written by John. I was very pleased 😊
This song was not from my generation, but lots of the older generation in my family listened to this song every Christmas. It brings back lots of memories. It's definitely a Christmas staple.
You’re right that was Yoko singing with additional voices. This is one of his masterpieces, I don’t know how I missed that when it was new - too young I guess 😉 Now, it’s beautiful expansive generosity and love make me cry ✊🏽
This has always been one of my favorites! Thanks for posting!!!! Oh, the Brits don’t say Merry Christmas, they say Happy Christmas! The Vietnam War was still raging. “War is Over” was a campaign that spoke for millions of Americans calling for the end of the war in Vietnam. It didn’t end until 1973. This was an unwinnable war (conflict the politicians called it) war.
This is pretty much my favorite Christmas songs. I appreciate that it stands alone in not being religious, about money/gifts, or a personal relationship. This is about universal peace, and love.
My favourite Christmas song of all time. When I was a little boy, I remember this playing while I went to see Santa. Also when I was older, it was always playing while I went Christmas shopping. The only song that I can tolerate Yoko Ono on.
This is a beautiful song of togetherness and love! Happy Holidays everyone! May your hearts be filled with love, joy, happiness and peace, today and always!💞
When I listen to this song I usually have goosebumps and cry thinking about the beauty of John Lennon's soul, one who is able to create a song like this is undoubtedly a true Human Being. Those who nowadays rule the world are so far away from such a beauty.
One of my favourite songs that is played around Christmas time is Stay by East 17 (official video is the best version to feel like Christmas). It is not about Christmas, but I think it was released at Christmas time, and has a Christmas feeling to it.
Apart from this and Kirsty McColl & The Pogues which you reacted to before my favourite Christmas songs are Jona Lewie - Stop The Cavalry Slade - Merry Christmas Everybody Greg Lake - I Believe In Father Christmas
John Lennon and The Plastic Ono Band. The band was originally made back in 1969. They have had different line up's but in 1969-1970 they had Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Keith Moon, Klaus Voormann, Billy Preston and Alan White. Ringo Starr was also a short time member. John Lennon and Yoko Ono also took part. Only Nicky Hopkins on piano from the early days plays on this song
One of my all-time favourite Christmas songs alongside The Pretenders "2000 miles" and Greg Lake's "I believe in Father Christmas". These two are definitely worth a reaction.
It's a fantastic song my favourite if you look at the adult video of that song it brings it home more clearly it brings it home to how the world should be peace and everyone live together very tearful but thoughtfelt

My 2nd birthday. lol
The Vietnam War was still going on. This is a GREAT song.
Happy Holidays, everyone.
My favorite Christmas song. I love McCartney's, but I love John's message more.

@@JStarStar00 To be fair, John used the melody of "Skewball" for the verses of this song. Hence, that probably sped up the writing.

Yoko is singing backup. Sounding good as well. War is over was a campaign in 1971 in Times Square. Big billboard they rented❤️ will never forget that. During the Vietnam War🥲
Very rare for Yoko to add value to a song, but she does very well here.

I love it when the children’s choir join in 🥰
Like millions of others I wish John Lennon was still with us! Merry Christmas to whoever is reading this!
My personal favorite. Not many Xmas songs that can bring tears to one's eyes...this is one of them.
this comment nailed it. I think for me, it's more powerful with that video (you know, the one that gives a glimpse of what war is like)
The only Christmas song that I look forward to hearing
The Viet Nam war was raging.
This song coincided with a huge campaign in several major cities. Huge billboards saying..." Happy Christmas. War Is Over!"

One of my favorite Christmas song; while Paul McCartney was happy, John Lennon was reflected. Love both 🎵🎵🎵❄️❄️❄️
I love this song. All John ever wanted was peace and love. He’d be disgusted by most of society

John was fearless in showing his heart and exactly who he was in everything he did. Merry Christmas Jayvee!
Exactly. Not many people are fearless about admitting what extraordinary arseholes they are, but he did it
@@celinahatton2653 Now it`s your turn.
John was a true heart, will always be true heart. I cry he should only be in his 80's.
If you listen carefully, you'll hear a riff of "Silent Night, Holy Night" from the string section near the end. Beautiful song.

I think the disjointed sounds in Paul's song are cool, and he of course makes a great melody, but it isn't recognizable as traditionally Christmassy, even with jingle bells.
@@tevenson79 It does get played a lot though, at least here in England. It's quite a commercial Christmas song whereas the John Lennon one isn't.

And as Beautiful as Imagine sounds, it was said by Lennon himself, it is literally the Communist Manifesto. It was supposed to be ironic.
Doesn’t have to do with us, he probably got into deep stuff
Everyone knows Yoko had him killed.
