    One of the best stories about this chasis is the legend of "the four horsemen".
    There was a planet with an old maltex plant that came under assault by a group of pirates some 2 companies strong; the local militia wasn't prepared to deal with sometthing like this and in the chaotic succession wars era many worlds simply lacked the nominal protection of a great house.
    4 wyverns appeared from seemingly nowhere, peppering the raiders with LRMs and luring them off into the forests and hills that surrounded the city, and the townsfolk while thankful could do nothing but offer prayers to the mysterious doomed lance that had saved them.
    2 weeks later the pirates emerged from the woods, reduced in numbers, their mechs and tanks shredded but instead of descending on the city they fled straight to their dropships, loose com traffic referencing the four horsemen of the apocalypse.
    No one knows who those mechwarriors were, or even whether or not they survived the fight in a practical sense, but their are those who say that they (or at least their mechs) are still out their, waiting for when they would be called upon again.

    You would think the original Star League design would have SOME sort of antiinfantry weapon, maybe the 2 small lasers replaced by a single small pulse. It's funny it took the Mech vs Mech obsessed clanners to slot on 2mg and a flamer with some of the weight saved by their OP tech.

    • @cobalt968
      @cobalt968 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      It’s weird. Small lasers are often referred to as infantry deterrents in the Battletech universe despite being not being good against infantry.
      I mean, a small laser will absolutely vaporize an infantryman at negligible heat cost to the mech. This is true. But even the lowly machine gun will outperform the small laser in this metric. Perhaps this is just a popular misconception about weapon capabilities that endured throughout the ages?

      In Battletech, MGs are NOT 'human scale'. Not if you want to be able to damage a Mech with some weapon like it. So, I'd say that Mech MGs are a minimum of .50 Calibur, and most likely as high as 20 mm or so. 20 milimeter would be about .79 Calibur. So, a 20 mm 'chaingun' really. This would be why MGs can do so much damage to Infantry. Even shots that actually miss a soldier would do damage to nearby solid objects, with resultant shrapnel. And any 'hit' would pop a human like a water balloon. So, yeah, a small laser would vaporize one human... a chaingun though, would spray hundreds of rounds down range... 'garden hose of death'.

    Hello Red.
    I only fielded a single Wyvern while playing in the Star League Era. Even though it was a valuable unit in my forces, I felt it could be improved upon.
    When the 3050, 3055, and 3067 TROs were released, I did so.
    My version (of the WVE-5N) strips all ammo dependent weapons from the chassis (this includes CASE). Instead, I bring its total of Medium Lasers up to Six, improve the armoring up to 9.5 tons, and dump the rest into a single small laser and heat sinks.
    Although slow for its weight, at 4/6/4 speed, it is well armored for its size, and now has plenty of firepower to use. The Large Laser is useful to do damage while closing on the Enemy, and the 6 Medium Lasers are near-overwhelming up close. 19 heat sinks (single) keep it cool, and only generate 1 point of heat at a running speed, if one does not use the large laser.
    This variation is meant to close upon an enemy's location behind cover, leap over, and devastate the target at close range. The Large Laser is 'merely' meant to deal some damage to the target while closing to where the Mech can blast away with those 6 Mediums.
    The Large Laser only does 8 points damage per shot. Whereas the 6 Mediums will do 30. More than enough to destabilize the Enemy Mech and force a Piloting Roll to remain upright. If shooting at Light or Medium Mechs, that 30 damage is in most cases either lethal, or crippling to the target. And 9.5 tons of armoring allow the Mech to close the range fast enough to do so.

      @@elchjol2777 : If used in a city fight, this variant would be pretty good. Able to close with the Enemy, jump behind, and carve 'em up. Also, not half bad for a 45 ton Mech. Although slow-ish, it packs one heck of a punch... so to speak. Also consider this: running and jumping while using the large laser isn't a real problem with the additional heat sinks. Yes, leaping over a building and blasting with all six mediums would generate some heat, but manageable. And, you have the option (depending upon initiative roll, to leap away if you 'lose', or wait until they move, then leap behind and do it all again... without overheating.

I guess if your not worried of accidently hitting your own buildings you can use it to fire over skycrappers into units spotted by infantry, I would had thought they would go with another large laser or an SRM instead. • @franksmedley7372
    @franksmedley7372 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hello Red.
    Revisiting the Wyvern design, I came up with yet another 'high-tech' work around. This time, based on the WVE-10N. In this variant, I stripe off all weaponry and equipment, excepting the CASE. I then put an ER Large Laser in each arm, an SRM-6 in the Center Torso (1 ton ammo in Left Torso, with CASE). I increase the IS DSHS to 12, and finally, add 3 ER Medium Lasers (one each, LT, RT, and H locations). Furthermore, I also move the extra pair of IS DSHS, so that each arm contains one each. I did not move the jump jets though. Keeping them in their 'normal' positions of LT, RT, LL, and RL. Moving the torso jump jets to the legs seems to be a 'logical' move, I realized that a single 'legging' would remove half of the Mech's jump capacity. Not an outcome to be desired, of course.
    If I had access to Clan Double Strength Heat Sinks, I could maintain the same configuration and yet free up more Internal spaces. This would allow the Mech to be upgraded with TSM easily. Why TSM over removing a Medium Laser and adding MASC? MASC would allow the Mech to move 25% faster than it's normal 'run', or, Flank Speed. This would be desirable, excepting the loss of the ER Medium Laser's firepower. But installing TSM results in a minor speed boost, in addition to doubling Physical Attack damage. This, I feel, would be more useful in Urban settings, and other 'close' terrain, like forests and jungles.
    The 12 DSHS give a heat dissipation of 24 per combat turn. Which is the total heat generated by both ER Large Lasers. So, the Mech heats up slowly as it walks and runs in combat. Although, the repeated use of both ER Large Lasers and jumping is contra-indicated. Where the Mech 'shines' is at shorter ranges, where it can jump, fire it's SRM, and all three ER Mediums, and still not exceed its heat dissipation envelope, for the most part. In fact, doing so, only generates a maximum of 25 heat total from jump jets, lasers, and the SRM.
    All of this while maintaining a protection of 9.0 tons of Standard armor.
    One can argue that removing a single ER Medium Laser for more armoring is a valid idea. But I maintain that the 9 points armor thus gained in this matter merely 'wastes' half a ton of valuable tonnage. There is an argument for removing a single ER Medium to add a single ER Small Laser, and half a ton of Armor. I can get behind that idea, since it reduces the 'safe' total of 'close combat' firepower down to 24 points of heat (barring the use of either or both ER Large Lasers). The change involving the ER Small and Armor does allow the Mech to jump and dump (excepting the use of the ER Large Lasers), with heat issues.
    Just a few thoughts.

      Finding one in an MW RPG is either the best thing ever, or your worst nightmare. Altering its weapons mix by removing the LRM, ammo, and CASE, and adding more heat sinks, and more Medium lasers, and you've increased its lethality 'up close and personal'. Although not 'fast', it can maneuver well with those jump jets, making terrain actually work for you and not the enemy, by allowing you to be 'in cover' while closing, leaping over that cover and behind the foe, and then unleashing hell upon them. I don't know anything barring an Assault Mech that could withstand that kind of attack at short range to its rear.

  • @gammafighter

    The Vindicator is one of my favorite mechs. If this one were more readily available, it would be too. It's basically a vindicator with a little less armor, the PPC downgraded to a Large Laser, and everything else amped up. I don't know how it has a lower BV than the Vindicator with double the LRMs and an SRM 6 pack. PPCs must be really expensive.
    I like to use both as bodyguard mechs. They can ward off light mechs that are harassing as many Lights can be crippled by a Large Laser or PPC shot to the right location. The SRMs synergize well in this duty because the Large will almost certainly strip the armor off one location so the SRMs have up to 6 chances to crit that location. The Jump Jets also mean they can get behind bigger mechs to target rear armor if they're called up to assist the battle line.
    They also both function well as support fire mechs with both the Vindicator and the Wyvern having two options for long range to soften up targets. As a result, I like using them as a 4th in a support fire lance. They can help lay down the support fire, but if the need arises, they can use their jump jets to reposition and target harassing cavalry/scout mechs. Most mechs can either be good bodyguards or good support fire mechs, but I really respect that the Wyvern and Vindicator can do both quite well.

  • @rotwang2000
    @rotwang2000 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    One of the biggest lies in Battletech is that if you're slow, you gotta fight in dense terrain like cities, which is the dumbest thing, in a city you need speed and mobility since cities are deathtraps for anything once you go into running mode. Therefore you need good walking mobility and preferably jump jets. If not you end up on your back sooner or later.
    It's just something they threw out in the TR's to justify some build like let's see how big a gun we can put on a light mech or let's make a close attack mech that is handicapped in speed, armour and has most of its weapons placed in the locations in the arms you're supposed to fight with, while the other weapons you could use have a minimum range !!!
    People should have noticed that if you put an Urbanmech or a Wyvern on a city map agains mechs like Uziels or Assassins they usually end up desperately looking for that one hex they can hide from the enemy rather than hunt down that enemy. We had a game like this weeks ago, and slow mechs unless they are really completely overhauled with the right weapons and gear, will suffer against faster, more capable mechs.

      This is one of these cases that the lore and the game don´t match.
      Yes, in game, more speed is always better; but in lore you have to take care of the momentum. You can´t go 100 km/h with a 40T mech and hope to stop at 100 meters because are a 12 floor building in front of you.

    Hey Big Red excellent video as always; but i have a question; earily in the video you mention that Wyvern could be a "trooper" mech; playing Battletech game i noticed that mechs have similar description in their mech files, there are cavalry mechs, trooper mechs etc. Is there a place where i can read about these designations cause i know literally nothing about them and i cant find anything on sarna (maybe im searching for wrong term)?

    • @user-jq1mg2mz7o
      @user-jq1mg2mz7o ปีที่แล้ว +1

      it's an unofficial term that many players use and which some of the official publications sometimes refer to in-universe. trooper 'mech especially has shown up before.
      basically just means a well-rounded, non-specialised, cheap-enough 'mech usually of medium weight class that can be used to fill out a, say, Lance, or other tactical unit, and expected to perform satisfactorily in "normal" operations for its cost and weight. non-specialised and non-expensive
      cavalry 'mechs are usually fast movers with a bit of a punch which can be used as, well, cavalry, flanking an enemy force, hitting hard, and using their speed to harass or continue the engagement while a "main line" force closes in with the enemy
      if you wanna check out Sarna, the closest is the Category: Unit Roles that list the unit roles used in Alpha Strike Companion and CamOps

    I'm really sick of Star League era mechs that don't have double heat sinks that would benefit greatly from them. With only 12 heat sinking capability the mech runs a little hot. If the Wyvern had double heat sinks, it would free up 2 more tons for weapons at small increase in price and eliminate all heat concerns. Since the mech is already heavily armored 2 medium lasers would be a good idea. Or scrap one of the missile systems for a second large laser or PPC.
    Also placing 2 missile systems on the mech, then placing 1 ton of ammo in each torso with CASE seems like a waste of half a ton. Should slap both sets of ammo in a single torso and CASE only that one. This does make me think the Succession era 6N was designed first and the CASE and armor were used to offset the weight savings from the Endosteel frame. Honestly not sure what to use the extra half ton on, which could be the reason the designer used 2 CASE, but that just seems to be a way to make the mech more vulnerable to ammo explosions.
    The Wyvern is a capable mech, but it misses out on some easy gains.

      @@BigRed40TECH Double Heatsinks cost about 6k each. 60k C-bills in a mech that costs several million is a no-brainer move. This isn't like we're designing the Urban Mech II.
      I'd agree if the mech couldn't overheat, like if your primary weapon was a Gauss. For a design like the Wyvern? Making the overall mech 5% better by using double heat sinks and investing in more weapons is going to drive more sales. Especially since the cost difference is only going to be $140k for 2 extra medium lasers and the double heat sink upgrade. I didn't even refund the 6k spent on the single heat sinks.

    • @jonbezeau3124
      @jonbezeau3124 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Double heatsinks are the most game-breaking lostech. Ten tons of sinks you can't even lose if your mech gets torn in two, and more free weight vs singles if you actually need to install more than 10. Endo steel can't match that kind of value until the mech hits 100 tons. Even an XL engine won't cough up 10 tons of weight savings until it's above the rating most Succession Wars era mechs can fit ... and then there's that thing where your machine goes down very shortly after any of your torso armor is penetrated.
      Something really cool MW5 changed is that your 10 core engine heatsinks are always singles. Doubles are great if you can lay hands on them at all, but don't change the game from Battletech to Zeta Gundam.
