  • Universal Design for Learning (UDL) offers all individuals multiple means of representation (e.g., signage appearing both in the [English] alphabet and braille), engagement (e.g., being able to choose to mobilize from floor to floor by stairs, elevator, escalator, or ramp), and action & expression (e.g., using either push buttons or eye scanners to gain access to areas of a building or provide feedback on an experience). The principles of UDL guides educators to provide all students with access to content, engagement, and learning. In doing so, course materials are readily accessible to all students regardless of interest, abilities, or learning differences. Having incorporated UDL in my own teaching for over 15 years, this topic hits differently now, as a parent of a child with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). I now also live and breathe these principals personally, and share my experiences in this presentation. First and foremost, I am a wife, a mom, a dog mom, a coffee and dark chocolate lover and a fitness enthusiast. I am a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist and Teacher of the Speech and Hearing Handicapped in New York State. I hold the Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCCs) from the American Speech-Language and Hearing Association (ASHA). I have conducted presentations on autism spectrum disorders and speech-language related topics at the local, state, national and international levels. My research areas focus on language and autism spectrum disorders (ASD) across the lifespan, as well as Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL). I am a retired Associate Professor, and Clinical Coordinator at the Genesis/Eden II Programs. Additionally, I am a Chair of the Committee on Special Education at the Westbury Union Free School District. Prior service includes but is not limited to past President of the Long Island Speech Language Hearing Association (LISHA). This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
