I ride solo exclusively, but nothing makes it more lonely than when the other cyclist I wave to doesn't wave back haha

you´re right, hapens the same here in my country,Portugal,i ride bikes for many years more than 40,im 62,and in the 80´s...90´s everybody wave at each other, but nowadays there is much more people riding, men and women, but are more closed.

No problem here getting an acknowledgment wave back from joggers, dog walkers, other cyclist, and even dudes on motorcycles. My small town must not have as many self-absorbed people than other places.

Lol Your just like me, I wave at the two other cyclists I will see, no return wave, then I carry on a conversation that didn't happen ( hey nice seeing you) ( take care hope to see you again soon) then there's the ones that pass you like your invisible!

In my heyday as a young cyclist, I was in road and criterium races. My early bikes were steel and Campagnolo friction groups. Now years later, retired, and a senior cyclist on advanced aluminum and carbon fiber bikes, I don't ride for the glory, but for the still solitude and serenity of life.

    • @CyclingDave

Excellent, Jerry what part of the country did you ride? I raced in Tri-Borough area of Norther New Jersey.. Steel Colnago with Record Campy.. loved it. I felt invincible on the hills. In fact, I still hold the Hill Climbing Championship from 1974. I beat a whole minute off the best time. Wow. Now living in Cuenca Ecuador at 8,300ft. I can't catch my breath going up these mountains... Maybe some day, but hey, that doesn't stop me from having fun.

@@CyclingDave My cycling involved amateur category races and a few criteriums. I have raced up Mount Diablo, I could have gotten to the top ahead of others but there were so many cyclists that it was hard to pass. Lots of benefit rides and centuries. My favorite bikes that I rode and owned were Italian made bikes like Colnago, Tomasini, Pinarello, Bottechia, Guerciotti, and especially Bianchi. I loved all Campy stuff both Super Record and C Record. I also liked Shimano Dura Ace. At 67 I am getting a knee replacement so I am looking forward to riding again after I heal.

I solo ride because there's no one else my age who rides like I do (30-50 mi at a time) in our neighborhood or who are retired like I am. Those who do ride a lot are in clubs & much younger cyclists who drop me in a 1/4 mile. So, I bask in my loneliness and enjoy it. I'll stop at a Maverik (popular gas station with food in Utah) and get something or a "gaseosa" of choice. I manage to leave one bottle cage open just for that. I enjoyed your ride today.

Solo can be good, as can riding with groups small and large… variety is the spice of life! Do some of each as fits your schedule and comfort level. The Elks BBQ is tri-tip sandwiches. Good stuff, but there are a lot more places serving them now than when they started many years ago. You could easily eat one and continue on the ride, especially if you were 3 hours in and had 2 hours to go…. The spots you are riding are some of the best road rides anywhere in the US. For those who are too scared to to ride because of cars, it is definitely worse than years ago, but Ventura County (where this was filmed) is very safe relative to many other places. If you ride at the right times (eg weekend mornings) you are much safer overall than when you drive. 🙏

Enjoy the ride until some idiot makes you road kill - or worse. Not a bad way to go to exit this world doing something you love to do, but you run the risk of surviving with serious life-changing injuries. I rode for 30 years plus all around So Cal and survived. Some drunk driver side swiped me in 2016. The situation on the road is so much worse now, I could never imagine riding like I did before. After 35 years of cycling almost daily, in 2017 I came home after my ride and ended up putting the bike away and haven't touched it since. It was very weird. It was not even something I planned. But reality just hit me that day that cycling in So Cal was way too dangerous to my health or survival. Now I am a runner, and even that is a dangerous activity given all the crap we deal with in LA.

I just bought a Trek Domane+ (road e-bike). Was going to buy just regular Domane but the price differential was only $500.The bike rides like a traditional bike when used without assist. I like that I have assist if I ever get close to bonking or need to fight the headwinds when riding back to home. Plus the Domane+ comes with speed and cadence sensors as well as a power meter (which isn't too accurate).
