- I got the idea for this episode, while driving into Gettysburg and saw one monument in particular, and I remember what Author and Historian Harry Pfanz, wrote about the monument (watch to see the monument I'm speaking about). He also wrote about another monument and the controversy surrounding that monument as well. Both monuments were placed in the 1880's, more than 20 years after the battle. But in both cases, the desire to be forever immortalized for the deeds the monuments were claiming burned very strong.
Tell me what you think. Did the Gettysburg Battlefield Commission get it right when they decided in both cases?
My main source for this episode was: Gettysburg the First Day; by Harry Pfanz.
If the Confederates fired at the New York Corporal, and he returned fire, shouldn't the Confederates get credit for firing the first shot?
Great point
Exactly.
I was thinking the same thing!
Keep up the good work.
Thank you. Greatly appreciated
give it to the 8th Illinois, if only for their exemplary service in the Maryland Campaign of September, 1862. The 9th NY claim is dubious at best, no one pickets the lowest elevation between two ridges, not even damn-Yankee cavalry. 8th Illinois was a first rate unit, by far the most engaged unit during Lee's first incursion into northern territory.
The sign at 3:47 is wrong. It should read: Willoughby's Run. It is a common error.
Thank you for making that correction for the viewers. Not sure who is responsible for placing that sign. The Gettysburg borough? Adams County? The Commonwealth? No idea
@@civilwarreports5665 If Tim Smith of the ABT hadn't pointed that common mistake out, I never would have known.
@@civilwarreports5665 Tim Smith. Just kidding.
Being from New York back in the day, he probably drove down that road in his Ford Model 18 to check, took a hit to the passenger side and started exchanging fire. With all the damage done and the body work that was going to be needed, the least the military historians could do was give him credit for taking the shot. My friends in Texas tell me that they won the war anyway, so I guess Gettysburg is only still important in the north.
Yeah, the Nazis and Confederates and Christo-fascists in totalitarian Tex-ass will always say the Southern Slave Power won the war. Hell, they're still fighting it.
It proves the old saying: success has many fathers, while failure is an orphan.
I am curious to know what type of pocket watch you carry. I enjoy your videos. Thanks!
It’s a cheap modern watch that I used for years when I was reenacting. Even though it’s modern it had a more antique look on the part that clips to my vest. It seem a lot of wear and the lid no longer locks in place. I just use it as a prop now
@@aliviashimmer9892 Thanks! I thought you might have had a period watch like a Waltham from the 1860's. 🙂
