Have visited Gettysburg, and all the battlefields in our country, and no matter how you view history, it's incredibly moving and humbling to walk the same ground where so many gave "the last full measure." Not just Civil War sites, but others like The Alamo and Little Big Horn too. They are all hallowed ground, shame on anyone who disrespects those who toiled there, and it's an afront to all of us.

My great uncle James Sockwell was in the 26th Alabama Infantry and was wounded at Gettysburg on July 3rd 1863 and captured in Field Hospital on July 5th.

Shameful. I grew up in southeastern Pennsylvania. As a Boy Scout, we hiked the battlefields of Gettysburg back in the 1970s. It’s truly a historical and special place. We Gen Xers had the sense to hold such a place in reverence.
But in a larger sense, we cannot dedicate, we cannot consecrate this hallowed ground. The brave men living and dead who struggled here, consecrated it for more than our poor power to do so. I think I got that close, anyway.

Been to this park and loved it, enough to see and learn for two days. Pretty infuriating. I once was quietly strolling through the wheat field and I saw a soda can in the middle of the battle field. I was incensed. I picked it up but I never forgot that.
That's what I loved about hiking through the Grand Canyon. Not one speck of trash. All the sightseers might venture down the trail on the south rim a few dozen steps, and then back to their air conditioned cars. It's too rugged an environment down in the canyon for the types that would vandalize or litter.

Was just there back in June although Little Roundtop was closed for maintenance. Got to see it from Devil's Den.
It will be interesting to see who the suspect is, because the marking looked rather childish - like someone was visiting with their bored pre-teen/teenager and let them wander off while the parents were looking at something else. Like someone else has said here, ignorance leads to this kind of vandalism.

No Shame and no honor....These self centered rotten cowards have no idea...how this battlefield shaped the history of our country - for both sides...and how the honored dead both of sides gave their lives for their land and country...Americans even today all have had a stake one way or another at what happened at Gettysburg.

My childhood was in Hagerstown & Frederick Maryland. We used to visit this site every summer. I remember the stations with the push the audio lecture button at some of the sites. Remember one being grossly kicked in and the tape recorder did not work.

That rock saw a lot of misery and death of great men , anyone should be honored to visit Gettysburg . I did back in 09. More Americans died in those 3 days than any other battle in us history

How about 1000 hours of community service in the park and required to attend educational programs on the importance of protecting our sites.
I find it equally disgusting that the park personnel learned of the damage from a social media post. Problem with seeking our or calling a park ranger?
