    This is why I stopped wearing quartz movement & smart watches and started wearing automatic watches. This is amazing engineering and inspires me everytime I see that on my wrist. Mind blowing engineering because a simple mechanical gear train can store energy and use it to run almost accurate(+- 2s/day for swiss movements) time while absorbing day to day shocks forever. Did humans really build this?

    Really nice animation. In my experience, the one thing you need to stress so a person understands the mechanism is that while the balance pushes the pallet fork back and forth, the pallet forks shape allows it to push (add energy to) the balance wheel every time it releases from the escape wheel. Without understanding that hard to see piece, it appears that the balance is where the power is coming from.

      Well if we're looking at this like a tutorial vid rather than an exhibition of this particular product's quality, "How a Watch Works (1949) | Hamilton Watch" (on the channel of Hamilton Watch of course) blows this out of the water. As this video goes out of its way to mention three brand-specific features of THIS watch at the end (special alloy, shock absorbtion, wear-resistant self-winding mechanism) I'd think this video comes closer to an artist just showing off their work. Rightly so if I might add.

    I'm a computer engineer but I always wanted to have a side hobby of building mechanisms with gears. it seems so relaxing, I'd like to replicate the mechanical wonders of the ancient world such as Da Vincis Knight, the Preening Swan or Al-Jazaris floating orchestra. People don't realize there were walking, "talking" and singing (from internal musical organs made to immitate singing) automata of the ancient world made from nothing but gears, pulleys, musical instruments etc. Primitive things. I think every engineer should dabble in our past achievements to understand the philosophy of our art and appreciate the modernity of the contemporary craft.

    My father was a watch and clock maker. I grew up with these beautiful things in his workroom, disassembled for repair / cleaning . Digital watches killed off the craft, and however clever and sophisticated our smart watches are, they cannot match the elegance and craftsmanship of mechanical watches. The big names like Omega, Rolex, Tissot, Seiko, Longines and Schaffhausen will always have their revered place in history. I hope they will continue to be manufactured for those who value their intricate precision and unique character. Likewise, digital pianos have their place, but give me a Bechstein or a Steinway any day.

    I can’t seem to understand what keeps the “regulation” or balance wheel in oscillation. My best guess is that the angle of interaction between the feet of the escape wheel and the pallet fork has something to do with pushing the impact jewel back and forth. If someone could explain that would be appreciated.

    • @natusaddeficiendum
      @natusaddeficiendum 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +12

      If I understood your question correctly and it is about how the hair spring gets energy to keep oscillating, then your guess is completely right. The escape wheel has all the energy from the main spring and wants to keep rotating in one way with all this energy. Now, the teeth (you called them feet) of the escape wheel and the jewels on the of the pallet fork are designed in such a way, that when the escape wheel rotates, one tooth a time will "slide off" the jewels of the pallet wheel and give it a little push. The pallet fork then continues to give the balance wheel just enough of a little push to wind up the hair spring again until it reverses.
      I hope this helps, I'm also still new to this, but i read multiple posts about this mechanism from my understanding, this is how it works.

    • @TinkerTailorSailorTy
      @TinkerTailorSailorTy 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@natusaddeficiendum omg thanks for explaining. I’m glad I had the right idea. Basically, in the same motion that the impact jewel (as I’ve heard it called) moves the fork to one side, the escape wheel pushes the fork in that same direction while the impact jewel is in it, assisting it the rest of the way around before the hairspring brings it back. Such a cool mechanic. It’s almost like the fork is a booby trap that keeps throwing the jewel back into itself.

  • @noelaruldas1152
    @noelaruldas1152 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Thank you very much for the video that shows the mechanism of a watch how does it works. The motion work (60 : 12 : 1 gear train mechanism) that drives the hands of the clock or watch is the same in both spring driven and quartz (battery operated) clock or watch but in spring driven clock or watch the gear train is driven by spring and the escapement keeps the pendulum or balance wheel oscillating for many days and in quartz clock or watch the gear train is driven by small peizo electric motor (either lavet stepping motor or smooth sweeping motor) that is powered by quartz crystal oscillator that receives power from battery via small electronic circuit board so there is no need for escapement. That is the difference. Please upload another video that shows the difference between the mechanism of spring driven clock or watch with centre second and without centre second.

    I just got a fossil watch that is self winding today and can be winded using the knob too, and I love it and have always wanted one, everything in it looks so fragile and I watched this because I wanted to know how it worked, everything seems sooo fragile in it, especially in the balance spring where it goes back and forth, in my head I'm thinking that there's no way that this thing can last...but hopefully it does. The way these things are designed it just blows my mind lol

      @@gergomato7723you should maintain mechanical watches. It’s not good to expose mechanical watches to shocks. They’re not shock resistant watches even if they say sport. Overhaul needs to be done every 5-6 years in normal wearing condition. For that you need to take it in every 4 years or something.

    Seiko's workhorse wonder. Yes, I've had 6R15's (mostly w/ the C-type balance) that did some crazy things, but I heard that some were not correctly lubricated in the factory. All 6R15D's I've handled performed quite well, with strong amplitudes between 275-310 degrees. I've also seen the other 6R iterations perform admirably, once given a good cleaning and lubrication.
