These videos are so important. What happened after the reviews, hype and the dust has settled. You know you get to deal with all the feedback on how you are wrong about everything, but these videos have to be made.
These videos don’t have to be made. You acting like it’s mandatory. Tom’s Lookback is great. This looks like they are trying to milk it. There’s no love it this. It’s hard coming up with new content when you are putting out so many top 10s.
They create tons of new content. They have new series every year. Is this like look back? Sure. How is that milking it? Is this the 5th sequel of a franchise or something? Is the quality going down by the video? Just an odd thing to comment
@@ejim941099 Tom's lookback is one of my favorite segments. I like this one too because it's from Chris' perspective. I also appreciate the games are more recent where the new ratings are adjusted after the honeymoon phase of a game.
I liked this format a lot. A change in rating can say a lot about replayability and a lot of hobby games are too much of an investment to only end up playing a few times.
This type of video builds on the Tom look back videos in a fantastic way. I highly encourage you to publish more of these. See how opinions change as 1-3 years goes by and the hype wears off.
Love this kind of video. I'd love to see more of these, including from the other DT folks. It's great to see how games change in our esteem over time when there's other things to play and the new game smell wears off
I love these kind of videos. I often buy games that are “tested and true.” I stay away from what’s hot and popular. Please keep making videos like these and encourage the folks in the office to make similar ones!!!
Good news is most of my ratings have stayed the same, but these were most of my notable changes. But it's nice getting a game knowing it has gone up in people's experience.
One of my favorite dt videos in a while for a few reasons 1. Format and concept are good: going back and showing how initial impressions have changed from reviewer who play hundred of games 2. Chris chose popular games not random ones that people don’t care about 3. Chris’ passion for gaming really came through. For someone who is sometimes a little awkward on camera, this was super genuine and enjoyable to watch
+1 to people mentioning the ark nova expansion. Also, really like Red Rising solo and I think i would really like it with people who knew the game. Its a lot of reading and explaining of new cards for people without experience with the it.
I’d argue the size of the dark tower blocking your view is a positive because now you actually communicate with people at the table about what’s on the other side.
So pleased to see more of this style of video. The changing views (up and down) of reviewers is both genuinely interesting and good for the hobby. Encourages people to take a breath and not always grab what's new, to think about those games that may grow on you after a few plays.
Hope you continue to make videos like this! I like the revisiting of scores once you've played the game over longer time and the surrounding hype has died down.
I still don't get all the desire to shorten Ark Nova. For me it feels like the perfect length. Its just so nice to settle in with two or three other players (two player is my least liked player count for this) are just experience the build up together. Perhaps my ultimate comfort game.
Excited to give to a try. That being said, I feel like that's sort of the nature of the beast with games like Ark Nova, it forces you to adapt and have a plan b in your back pocket. Otherwise you're just asking to lose. It's fair to not enjoy this aspect however.
This would be a situation where I would keep my dropped rating of the base game the same, but maybe rate the expansion itself very highly if it mitigates an issue.
I like the topic of the video a lot. And it takes some courage to rate Ark Nova at 7. I wonder if there is another board game reviewer in the world who rates Red Rising higher then Ark Nova. It's BGG 941 vs. BGG 4!
This changing reviews thing is such a nice concept that more youtubers should do, way too many times our favorite reviewers hype us for a few games, just to drop in a few months, but seen how games change with time and replays is important as well! keep it up!
Speaking of songs about changes… “Well, I’ve been afraid of changin’ cause I built my life around poo” is the song I always sing when changing my kid’s diaper.
Totally agree with the many comments already. This is even more useful than the initial review ratings, I think. This confirms the reasons why I didn’t pick up Flamecraft or Ark Nova. Happy to play them with someone but not enough staying power to earn a spot in the collection.
Very good video concept. Some games show their true colors (for better or worse) after several sessions instead of the few you can get out before having to record the initial review. Congrats on the idea. I don't agree with the drops on Ark Nova, but definitely agree with Heat getting better after several games.
Thanks! It's mostly taking Tom's Look Back video and focusing on the games that changed, but it was fun to do still. I think Ark Nova might get some more love after I try the expansion but I haven't felt the desire to play the game in a while.
@@thedicetower I love it Chris...I love when you and/or Wendy and/or you both just talk about these small little game topics. It feels like conversation that is had after a game night with friends. For me, it is better that than reviews and top lists (although I love hearing about all of you humans and your top 50s)!
Ark Nova's expansion allows you to get a university with a animal icon. That helps solve the issue you picked out. And yes, it's a long game, but I feel like it's worth the time.
You should play more Arke Nova (at two-three players, or online). Getting certain symbols or just forgetting about some attractive-seeming cards requires a flexibility that you need to get used to. It is part of the challenge and the fun!
Great video seeing one person's opinion re-evaluate how they feel about certain games. Funnier the comments...OH MY GOSH THIS IS SO IMPORTANT BECAUSE I'M THE ONLY PERSON WHO'S CORRECT AND SOMEBODY ON TH-cam FINALLY AGREES!
Great segment Chris. I appreciate this format more than Tom’s to be honest. It’s way more interesting to hear about a few games where you rating has changed than a bunch of games where your rating has stayed the same. I recommend checking out the second Red Rising sequel. It’s mostly a new story with new characters but many characters from the original trilogy are still in there with their continuing storylines. The latest book, Lightbringer, was especially good!
It works well for me because I don't have 20 years of reviews. Also I probably won't be able to do another one of these for a long while! Tom's format works so well because it's good exposure for newer gamers to see a bunch if games they may never have heard of!
Correction for Ark Nova: the expansion not only allows you to fish cards out of the deck (through a mechanic of "reveal cards until you hit x"), but the university that does so actually gives you one of those icons as well I think your criticism about certain cards being hard to play is just...part of the game? You're not supposed to be playing every card you draw, the point is to find the cards that best fit your situation. Certain cards, such as the Lion, the Panda, and the Proboscis Monkey, are very, very hard to play, but super powerful when you are able to play them. The biggest gripe I have with Ark Nova is when you, and the other players, just can't find anything, so you're left with just blind drawing from the deck, and the person who wins is the person who hits the most powerful cards.
I would strongly recommend reading the rest of the Red Rising series. Is Dark Age an absolute bloodbath for most of the characters, yes, but it may also be one of the most epic and amazing books I have ever read.
There is a seventh book coming out and I can’t wait! I have recommended the series many times. I also prefer the solo version but still enjoy the multiplayer.
Since the solo mode for Red Rising helped you adjust your thinking on it, I really recommend that you try the solo mode for Seize the Bean. It has one of the best solo modes that I have played. It even has 20 different levels of difficulty. It’s cool to work through each different difficulty level to see if you can beat the AI style opponent. I know that you had issues with some of the iconography (which I personally had no problem with), but if you are able to get past that, I think you will find that the gameplay is excellent and a great challenge.
Very nice video! For me ark nova has an even bigger issue and that’s the first player advantage. Especially in a 3/4 player game the first player has the first chance to grab one of the partner zoos or universities and the 4th player or third player has to take what’s left basically. With this first partner zoo, rushing to a conservation project is quite easy. The first player also gets to have one more round than all the others (if he doesn’t finish) and one round in this game is a huge advantage.
I presume Chris is saving his Bonfire upgrade for the next video in this series. I'm currently really digging Tabannusi. I don't know that it reaches the heights of Teotihuacan (also my favorite T game), but I think it's a neat system. The "procedural" complaint is apt, however. I do kind of agree with Red Rising - it is too chaotic with 3+ players, but at solo, you can really strategize.
Agree on Flamecraft! I am intrigued by Sky Team but... I just can't get past thematically, why the pilot and co-pilot can't communicate. I definitely need to play more of the content in Heat.
The game does allow some communication between rounds, but during the round I feel like the lack of communication makes a lot of sense. I would be terrified if the copilot of my plane had to ask the pilot "Should I lower the landing gear this time or let you land without them?" Each person has to be able to fill their responsibility and do it in good timing with the other person doing their job. It's like music to me, when a bassist and a drummer get into a really smooth, unspoken groove because they both know how to do their job while working with each other.
I know it’s not on here, but Earth has really dropped for me. In its place has risen Ares Expedition. They are both very different… but similar enough that for me, I would choose Ares every time
I wasn't in the review for Earth, but it's actually moved up a little bit for me compared to what I would have given it in the review because of how surprisingly smooth the game is to teach. But that might be something I value more than people who have a more consistent game group I think.
Heat was my biggest facepalm moment in gaming. I played it once and didn't like it. I thought it was fine and overrated. Well it's now one of my favorite games of all time.
That's cool! I've got a few games that have done that too outside of Dice Tower reviews. Maybe I'll do another video like this with games from before I worked here. My biggest jump is a game I probably would have given a 5 that's up to a 9 for me now.
Love this format, dice tower members should do more Too many reviewers based their reviews on just a small handful of plays, too many games bling and starts off with a bang, but no longevity. Its good to know if the hotness is maintained after repeated plays and if campaigns arcs are good all the way to the end
Glad you enjoyed it. Most games do stay on or close to their rating, but it is fun even for me to bring these games back up. Top 10 lists do similarly, actually! Kind of like how Cthulhu Death May Die has moved up a lot for Zee since his initial review.
No, I know that can help resolve looking for specific cards. Doesn't help the length, but I am interested enough to try it some time when I have a lot of spare hours!
Heat is that kind of a game, where the new players will go like "whatever you say" to "I am going to slipstream your ass mofo" in a matter of 10 minutes.
Ha, I still enjoy Flamecraft but so many other games ahead of it. As I said in the video, I'm afraid I still might be underrated Heat, but a 9 feels really good for now.
Sorry Chris... Everybody doesn't live happily ever after... I've done three trips through the Red Rising initial trilogy and am working my way through the next three for a second time. They add some really fascinating depth to some of the characters, new and old. I think the ride is worth it.
La la la la la I can't hear you! Everything is great and they don't mess up the happy new world order they establish immediately like every sequel series does with this type of story! La la la la la!
Off topic - I've recently noticed some Americans pronouncing "experiment" similarly to "experience," ie, ex- peer-ience. Is this a regional thing, a generational thing, a bit of both or something else entirely? How do you pronounce it, "e" or "E"?
Dark Tower...it's still just a pez dispenser with lights. There's a good review on BGG about Dark Tower. It lists all the things the old tower used to do, all the bookkeeping and stuff. The new tower doesn't do that. It spits skulls and blinks some lights. Yay. It doesn't even do battles. The point of the tower was interacting with the tower. You engaged with it. Literally. Given how little the new one actually does, no matter how people try to convince themselves, it doesn't justify the added price point the tower brings. Unless one has a lot of money to burn. Otherwise there are equal or better games for the price. The expansions look cool and stuff, but it could've been done for much cheaper, especially since the game uses an app. But..people like blinking lights and an overpriced skull spitter.
Haha, I disagree of course. I did play a very early prototype without the tower (before working for the Dice Tower) and even having the app without the tower, the game didn't work as smoothly. Just a difference of opinion on it, though!
I find the Marvel UnMatched to be the least interesting characters to play. Do play more of Tales to Amaze and then use those characters on one of the Marvel maps as 1 vs 1.
I know the expansion allows you to find more specific cards from the deck, so it may resolve one of my biggest issues. And the unique card upgrades sound neat too.
No! You've caught Tom's incorrect usage of the word "Zounds"! It doesn't mean "a lot" as Tom uses it, it's a mild oath, used to express surprise or anger. It's a shortened version of "God's Wounds!", so if you wouldn't say "God's wounds!" in the sentence, don't say "zounds!".
I'm hardly even interested in your initial ratings, as they are almost always opposite of what I think, I just watched this video thinking "wow this person must really be not enjoying board games". Not a bad thing per se but together with being a reviewer, this must suck.
All the explanations and flowery language in the world still isn’t going to help you, Chris. Not until you stop hating on cooperative Unmatched and give Tales to Amaze the perfect 10 it deserves! A 10!!! Good day, sir!

OH MAN MAYBE!
I’ll confess, my first question was, “why would they change the age ratings of board games?” 🤷
Haha. I could see the confusion.
Has your rating changed for Golem?
Maaaaybe, but it already started so high at the review and if anything it might have climbed a little. Still a phenomenal game!
It,s so so good ♫♪♫♪
Return to dark tower is my gaming group favorite coop game, there’s nothing we don’t like.
Yes there’s might be luck but life is base on luck so 🤷🏻
Read them! Hail Reaper!
red rising higher than ark nova? woof
I'm going through chaaaanges
flamecraft is still WAY too high...smh
Ha! Well I still LIKE it.
I find the Marvel UnMatched to be the least interesting characters to play. Do play more of Tales to Amaze and then use those characters on one of the Marvel maps as 1 vs 1.
There's so many good ones, and some will speak to different people more, but Ghostrider and Tesla are SO FUN to me.
Ark Nova is too long but I still enjoy it, I have the expansion but still havent tried it out either. Some great games here.
Interesting. I do want to say "heaps" more often for that intended meaning.
Return to Dark Tower is a great game, Ark Nova is way overrated - it's a pointsalad euro that takes 4 hours. Way too long for what it is.
Do not read the remainder of the Red Rising series… serious let down from the initial trilogy.
I'm hardly even interested in your initial ratings, as they are almost always opposite of what I think, I just watched this video thinking "wow this person must really be not enjoying board games". Not a bad thing per se but together with being a reviewer, this must suck.
Not sure why you think I'm not enjoying gaming that's certainly not the case
Especially as I spent half the video talking about games I love.
@@thedicetower Wait, so you rate "games you love" with a 7.5? In dice tower terms, most reviewers slap a 9 or even 10 when they say they love a game.
Ark Nova is amazing. I would never play it 4 player again as it's just far too long.
All the explanations and flowery language in the world still isn’t going to help you, Chris. Not until you stop hating on cooperative Unmatched and give Tales to Amaze the perfect 10 it deserves! A 10!!! Good day, sir!
I'm not Wendy's, the Internet can't convince me to give up a surge-pricing model that will only give Adventures a 10 on Thursdays from 2 to 4pm. 😋
Lookback?
Yeah, similar to Tom's Look Back but I didn't want to just copy it outright. Figured focusing on the changes could be fun!
@@thedicetower been asking for years for zee and others to do lookback. Yes copy!
Ark Nova only takes 60 to 90 minutes with two players.
