It's ALIVE...First Start Porsche 912

- This engine started as a failed rebuild project 15 years ago. I bought this engine mostly disassembled in a card box and a bucket of bolts. Now this engine will get my Porsche 911 on the road while I build my dream engine.
Everything didn't go perfect, but it did run!

Can't wait to see it running around town.
Colt? If so you should see it for sure. My sister lives in your neighborhood on Gentry St. I'll stop by
When you get tired of your timing light and dwell meter, you should buy the Innova 5568 Pro timing light. I have it and love it. It displays both RPM’s and dwell. I like that I can confirm that dwell is still 50 degrees while checking/adjusting timing on my 912. I also use the timing light for the RPM function when fine tuning the air/fuel mixture on my carbs(for finding fastest idle on each carb throat). It’s awesome. I highly recommend it. Plus, it comes with a carrying/storage case, so that’s a plus.
Cool, thanks for the tip. Is it battery operated. I hate having all those wires lying around.
@@GarageTimeAutoResto It’s car battery operated. The timing light works like any other timing light- the only difference is that it has an extra connection for dwell(green color lead).
I usually connect red lead to the generator regulator(the connection that goes to the battery) in the engine bay, black to ground, spark plug wire pickup to #1 plug wire, and the green dwell lead to the negative side on the coil. What’s also cool is that it’s also supposed to work on two stroke engines. The other cool feature is that those four timing light wires come together into one plug, which plugs into the timing light. This allows you to keep things nice and neat when storing the timing light in the storage case. Also, if you damage the wires, you can buy a replacement set from their website for about $30.
Actually, another cool thing is that it measures voltage, so if you have it connected to your voltage regulator, you can read the battery voltage.
Really cool Tom. Certainly a big milestone. My guess is, the 356 understands.... 👍👍
Probably! A little sibling rivalry is a good thing!
Gotta love it, Tom. Good job. Nothing like the first start...even if it is only 4 cylinders!
Right, it's a good feeling. It was only running on two cylinders there for a second!
@@GarageTimeAutoResto Yeah, I noticed that. Sounded strong the next run, though. What does that engine put out (hp-wise)?
Probably 95hp. It has a big bore kit, so 1720 cc instead of 1600cc
@@GarageTimeAutoResto That'll be fun, especially with the car being light.
Congrats on getting the engine started! I'm ready to see a gopro in full affect with you cruising through some twisties! I also noticed that you have some silver dot gauges those will go great with your backdate. I need to get a set as I have a mis-match set in terrible shape. It may make for a good video showing us how to restore them. Congrats again!
Thanks Rodney. Did you see that speedo is in km/hr? Kinda cool and will probably leave it that way. Mike's restoration has great videos on guage refurb. I'll show mine too when the times comes.
@@GarageTimeAutoResto Oh man! Now I'm jealous with the KM/hr. Speedo. That is what I am planning on getting. You should definitely keep it. I did watch Mike's Restorations... but that is not reality, from start to finish it took him like 6 months plus to get done with them sending the gauges back and forth to N. Hollywood. I want to simply clean mine up and make them look presentable. There is a guy on pelican parts doing gauges on the side so if I run into any issues with functionality I may send them his way. Or if I need it switch to Km/hr. !
That's great to see. Now we look forward to the first drive. My machinist is about to finish-up my 356 engine so hopefully I can start the assembly soon.
Cool, best wishes on that 356 engine!
Congrats!
Well done !!!
Awesome hearing that thing make some noise.
Congratulations, sounds great. Well done. 👍
Thank you, check back soon for the drive around the block video
Well done Tom .. another great sense of achievement for you again. Appeared to go fairly smoothly 👍👍
Yes, not bad. I would have liked to get the rpms up sooner with less cranking, but nothing out of the normal.
That is the video i have wait for
Great engineering Tom, respect
Thanks Luca, you are very patient 😀
great job Tom! congratulations! anxious for the 1st drive.
Working on the axle install tonight
Awesome. Engine sounds great
Thanks, it will be fun to tune! Looking forward to that once it's broken in a bit more.
Congrats on the succesful first fire. Looking forward to seeing it drive.
Congratulations mate, it must feel awesome to get a great result from all the work put in! The flat-four looks so tiny in that big engine bay, but very very tidy.
Thanks! I could carry a set of golf clubs back there, ha ha.
It’s come a long way, congratulations! All your work has been impeccable.
Thanks Dave! I appreciate you being here from day 1
I never miss a video.
A giant step forward. Congratulations - fantastic work as always. Looking forward to follow the progress.
Thanks, this car is going to be a lot of fun on the road. There's a lot more tuning and setup to come!
Great job Tom, you need a remote starter switch back on the left side, by the voltage regulator, so you can crank it from the back.
Good idea. www.zalexindustries.com/products/engine-test-stand-control-box
Don't know why I didn't use my own product for this?
@@GarageTimeAutoResto - Actually you can just use the extra yellow wire to use to start the engine from the back - no need for a remote starter ;)
Brilliant Tom, well done! 👏
Congrats!!
Thx
Congratulations Tom, sounds great!
Pleased for you Tom, Engine sounds awesome,
Congratulations Tom and that engine sounds great 😁 I just checked back your vids and can't believe its been a good 2.5 years since I stumbled upon your channel with single digit subs 👍 What a journey hey! Now let's get her on the road so you can start to really enjoy all your hard work and here's to years of moding to look forwards to 🍻
Thanks Mark! You have been a big help with all kinds things like roll bar, paint and body, shop air, motivation, etc. You even have the Shepherd hatch named after you! Thanks for sticking around! Cheers!
Great work Tom!!!
Congrats, sounds smooth...
Amazing! Sounds good
I've been following your channel but must have missed something. What year is this car? It's not a 912 originally and now converted to one? If you're putting a flat 4 cylinder in there will it be a fun track car considering the lack of power this engine has? You're doing a great job btw and it's amazing to see this car start for the first time.
Hi Vincent, this 912 engine is a temporary one to enjoy the car as a 912 while I build a 911 engine. It will 3.0.+ liters.
My car is a 1974
Ultra cool and nicely done I recently acquired my Dad’s ‘68 912 that has been sitting for 12 years. Gonna be a fun project for my son and I this summer before he starts college. Curious, can a modified Bergman shroud fit a 912 engine?
I'm happy to hear that you and your son are working on your dad's 912!
The VW fan shroud and 912 fan shrouds aren't that different so I'm sure you could make it fit.
Why do you want to do the fan conversion though?
@@GarageTimeAutoResto In all fairness, my father actually gave the car to my son. My parents (now in their early 80s) are finally downsizing and my son asked my Dad what he was going to do with the 912. My dad asked if he wanted it and my son nearly jumped out of his skin and said, “Absolutely!” They shook on it.
With regard to the shroud, my son just thinks they look cool. We recently went to an aircooled VW show and he saw a Beetle T1 with one and likes the look.
Baby's first cry. Yaaaay!!
Well said!
Yay! Congratulation. Sweet success.
Thanks Tom can i ask if you aren't doing a 6 banger how about a subaru turbo? just saying 'cos all your hard work and lots of power to play with
I'm doing a six banger in the near future and it will be Porsche. Plenty of power for a light car.
Hi Tom, great job. Where do you get the energy for all this work ? Greetings from Germany
This might be a video topic on its own? But the truth is this is exhausting work. There are times when I over do it and get a headache and stop. It's also work that I love doing. Besides that I almost always take the weekends off and I never watch TV.
Yaaaa
Nice work :)
Hey Tom are you going to install your original seats in the car now that the engine is running or are you going to replace , I am looking for a 1964 356C drivers seat or both paddle sides parts of the recliner?
The sparcos are staying in the 911 for a while. I won't use stock seats in this car. I do have 356 seats and parts, but untill I finish the 356 I'm going to hang on to them.
Hey Tom thank you and just finished watching your last video, smokey fun and engine running well done.@@GarageTimeAutoResto
Cool, congratz ! How do you adjust the idle on the right and left side so they are the same ?
It's kind of close.😊 I will do full carb synch video soon after the engine is broken in and warmed up.
You wouldn’t happen to know how long that 912 motor is. (Front to back)
I have an extra engine case I can measure if that's what you need. Or are you asking about the complete engine with tin and muffler, etc?
No just the case, thank you
🤘
👍
How high did you get inhaling all those exhaust fumes?
My 912’s gauge has a green dot for oil pressure, and a red for generator. Does your gauge have both red?
I was high on adrenaline, just kidding. That was fresh J tube header paint, oil on the exhaust, and two stroke oil all mixed together. I did have both doors open.
Might depend on the year. I have a 69' 912 and red is for low oil pressure and green is for low energery generation. I guess you could swap the lights and get how ever you want, but all that matters is that one knows what the light means.
Work the details out put some e mileage on this beautiful well rebuilt car.
Than get the 6.
My thought exactly!
