  • Chico and Harpo are breaking Bob (Oscar Shaw) out of jail because Bob's girlfriend Polly (Mary Eaton) is being forced to marry bad guy Harvey Yates.
But Chico can't remember the name "Harvey Yates" to save his life.
So Bob finally has to turn psychic and say it for him.
"She's gotta have you. Because tonight she gonna be, uh, engaged."
    "To who?"
"To Polly. He's engaged to Polly."
    "POLLY'S GOING TO MARRY YATES?"
    Nice mind-reading there, Bob!
And to top it all off, Harpo gets his foot stuck in the door on the way out.
I neither own nor claim any rights to this material. Just having some fun with it. Thanks for watching!

Agree with everyone else. As with Harpo getting his foot stuck, it’s just so funny and something he would do 😂 honestly the Marx Bros were great at improv when they needed to

The Brothers weren't just movie actors, they had put in years of live performance in Vaudeville. They were probably so used to having to improvise it didn't faze them.

It's debatable if he said Yates during this scene, mostly because this is a very early sound film, so the quality isn't great (they had to soak the blueprints in an earlier scene to keep them from rustling). If he did forget the name, it's understandable. The Marx Brothers filmed this movie during the day while performing Animal Crackers on Broadway almost every night. They were dead tired every day they filmed The Cocoanuts.

But Chico DOES say it. The name, “Yates.” When Chico’s stammering and trying to get back on track after Bob has asked him, “Who - to who?’’ I hear him reply, “To Polly - Yates to Polly.” Like “Yates” is an afterthought. Then Bob blurts out “Polly’s going to marry YATES??” with enough emphasis to make sure the audience gets it after Chico garbled his lines so badly.

@@FerdinandCesarano I can't tell for sure, but to me it sounds more like "engaged to Polly" than "Yates to Polly."
Either way, he started out forgetting and the first (if not the second) response to "to who?" shows his brilliance as an ad-libber.

I think it’s all in character for Chico, who was playing an immigrant with a less than perfect command of English. He performed COCOANUTS hundreds of times on Broadway, and he clearly understood his character better than anyone.

  • @rackinfrackin2883
    @rackinfrackin2883 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Unlikely. Cocoanuts was a Broadway play before it was a film. Chico and his brothers performed it literally hundreds of times live.

  • @healer378

He was acting as a foreigner. So, actually it added to the act that he can't talk right, made the play even more sweat.

The only one who even cared was Joe Adamson, who genuinely seemed to think that "Duck Soup" is the only movie they made that's worth watching all the way through, all of the others missed their mark.

The scene worked. Hence, it was not a blooper. There were probably 3 takes and the director chose that one.

In the stage version of Coconuts there was a Raising money for bail, but in the film version they changed it to a Jail break in order to get Bob out so of course Chico is going to be out of his comfort zone and mess his lines up.

There was no jail break in the stage play of Coconuts, so Chico knowing the lines of by heart in the old version gave him a false sense of security for this film hence him messing up his line.
