Diagnosed with Dysautonomia six years after a severe respiratory infection. Have had severe dysmotility that was confirmed by several tests including a Sitz Marker test that showed slow transit constipation. After trying several medications with severe side effects, exercises, increased fluids, low fiber diet, GF, low FODMAP, pelvic PT, I finally made the decision to have a loop ilesotomy done. I know I made the right choice for me, it’s been big improvement over what I was dealing with prior. Not always easy but I’ll take it. Several months of voice and swallow therapy with a speech pathologist improved my esophageal dysmotility (and dysphonia) quite a bit too. It can be incredibly frustrating to deal with it all but keep moving forward. Thank you for your videos and spreading the info about Dysautonomia.

I have a motility disorder, gastroparesis and while my dysautonomia is the one that looks the most disabling, my motility disorder has been most dangerous for me and made me miss a month and a half of school, led me to be admitted in hospital. It has definitely changed my relationship with food. I deal with vomiting, early satiety and nausea more than the symptoms you’ve listed but that’s that.

Dysmotility is a very difficult symptom to manage. Sometimes it is brought on by dysautonomia (the dysfunctional ANS) or sometimes a motility disorder is a result of another illness and dysautonomia can make it worse. Regardless of the cause, it is a painful and sometimes dangerous disorder. We hope you find some relief soon.

There is no set diet for dysmotility per se. But eating a diet rich in whole grains, fruits, vegetables & avoiding too much red meat is generally considered healthy for all of us. But with dysmotility, you should check with your doctor for a referral to a nutritionist to help you construct a meal plan specific to eliminating your symptoms.

Here is a potential study. Take a group of people who suffer from chronic dysmotility (constipation) - and see how daily Metamucil helps improves their constipation.

That may help people who have constipation in general. However, Metamucil works by helping the intestines absorb more water, making it easier to pass stool. That is not what dysmotility is. Dysmotility is an abnormal contraction of the intestinal muscles, not a problem absorbing water in the intestinal tract. The abnormal contractions related to dysautonomia are not corrected by Metamucil. If Metamucil helps constipation in a person with dysautonomia, then that person does not have dysmotility in the true sense.

@DINET - Dysautonomia Information Network I think the commenter was more leaning to find out how many of us with dysmotility who have been told by most GIs and nutritionists to get that fiber in us, to only find out it screwed us up more because it sat there and hardened into a beozar or other blockage.

@@DysautonomiaInformationNetwork Yes... I didn't mean Metamucil alone.... I apologize. If I didn't have my Mestinon - I would be in so much trouble. I meant those people who take prescribed medication for their dysautonomia (dismotility) - if they added metamucil - how that would help. Metamucil alone certainly isn't going to help.

@@jasonwalker7166 Very good point. I wanted to be certain that someone with dysmotility doesn't confuse general constipation with dysmotility. As @Rainbow Zebra Unicorn Pegasus explained in their comment, treating dysmotility as general constipation can have serious negative results. Thank you both for your clarification.

@@rainbowzebraunicornpegasus2962, the commenter clarified his message. Your point is well taken that many OTC solutions for general constipation can have negative effects on a person with dysmotility, They are very different things.
