    I'm probably bring an ass here, but some things worth mentioning:
    IBD is caused by an arenavirus, which is viable for quite a while outside the host. Non-boids can harbor and shed the virus without illness. Regurgitation is only seen in boas, and is in fact universally the first symptom, followed by anorexia. Not all boas show neurological symptoms at all. Inflammation is only seen in pythons. Boas can be asymptomative carriers and the incubation period appears to be on the order of years, even though they harbor and shed massive quantities of virus during that time. Viral replication and inclusion bodies are seem in a wide array of tissues. Once the disease process does begin, in adult specimens, beyond regurgitation and anorexia, it is extremely unpredictable with wildly varying symptoms and a more chronic, debilitating disease course and slow progression to death. In juvenile boas, the disease presents similarly to pythons. Pythons have a very brief incubation period of a month or two, inclusion bodies and viral replication exclusively in brain parenchyma, severe inflammation, strictly neurological symptoms, and rapid, predictable progression to death.

      Can you kill the IBD virus on surfaces you suspect may have been exposed to an animal that carried the disease? Say, using F10?

    Another great example as to WHY we should keep our reptiles separate from each other. I see so many new keepers put two snakes in one cage. Huge no no for many reasons. It is imperative to be knowledgeable of the things that can go wrong in reptile keeping before you buy.

    My ball python that I got in July died yesterday from IBD, we didn’t realize she was even sick until she was on her last leg. IBD is terrifying and should be talked about more in the snake community. I didn’t know what it was until the day before my sweet girl passed and she’s not my first ball python. I’ve had one before and like I said I had no knowledge of IBD until now.

    Over heating of a boa will cause the same symptoms you are describing. Usually a boa will die pretty soon after the symptom's of IBD are visible.

    My bredl python has started to throw his body when I try to feed him as if he is scared of the food. Could this be IBD? He does not act like this until I approach him.

    I have a 6 month old sand boa that eats with her head upside down, but this is the only time she turns her head. She also has a tendency to skip meals and usually only wants to feed about every other week (although I try at least once a week). have recently noticed that taking her out of her enclosure to feed has helped in the last few weeks. Does this sound like a case of IBD to you?

  • @slitheringfamiliars

    My ball python just got diagnosed with IBD. It was tested because of his swollen eyes that wouldnt go away unless constantly treated with antibiotics. He is 3 years old and has had this eye issue since i got him at 6 months old. He seems perfectly healthy asidw from dealing with his eyes. He also has normal bloodwork aside from increased white bloodcells due to the current eye infection. Is it common for pythons to live years with it before it exhibits fatal symptoms?

    • @JasonsExoticReptiles
      @JasonsExoticReptiles  วันที่ผ่านมา

      Potentially. It’s also worth understanding how it was tested. Any infection can cause inclusion bodies and will give false IBD positives if the person testing doesn’t know what they are doing.

    Do boas ever just sleep with their heads upside down? My snake seems healthy in every other way but I found her sleeping with her head upside down. She awoke and corrected herself and hasnt shown any other signs but just figured Id ask if anyones snake has slept with its head upside down and it not be a disease.

    Omgeezzzzz this vid just mad me sad. I need your help. I have 3 snakes in my room (1 ball 2 boas) I always thought my ball was like the bad toddler of the bunch. Constantly falling off her log (literally every night since I’ve had her 2.5/3 years smh), pointing nose straight to the sky and staying there for minutes on end . Just yesterday I tried to feed her and she denied both rats. Then I realized she’s very sluggish and moving like her head is heavy. On top of holding her head upside down (which I’ve never seen her do before) . I’m worried she won’t make it thru the night . What should I do ??? 😩😩😩

      It's possible, but keep in mind that there are a lot of things that cause IBD like symptoms. And it's probably not the first thing I would jump to. Typically similar symptoms are shown because the animal was treated with some type of a Mite spray or parasite spray, temperatures were too hot at some point and they didn't notice it, or they were some kind of a head trauma. There could also be other things going on with the snake that could cause neurological like symptoms. Not to completely rule out IBD, but that's usually the last thing that I jump to

    Guys, I have one adolescent ball python. I try to be very careful with his husbandry. My dad has 2 corn snakes in a different room and is not that careful. He will clean my ball when he’s cleaning his and isn’t careful with cross contamination. Can my baby catch anything from those two? They have every appearance of being healthy snakes as does my ball. Thanks for your video!

    • @matthewleonard386

      Corn snakes can carry reptarenavirus without any clinical illness at all. It's an very low risk, but I would avoid it if possible.

    What are the chances a boa will have IBD. I have a ball and was thinking about getting a boa aswell, I would be getting a young boa from a reputable seller just not sure on the chances of it having IBD after watching this video.

    • @JasonsExoticReptiles
      @JasonsExoticReptiles  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      About the same chances that a ball python would have IBD. I'd say it's really not as big of an issue as some people make it out to be but it certainly around. As long as you're buying from reputable people you should be in good shape, but be careful as many of those reputable people are the biggest sources contributing to the spread of this. Most of the bigger names are the ones who started it and continue to spread it

    I really need help! I used the prevent a mite spray and waited a day before putting my Ball Python back in. And that’s when he started acting funny and can’t seem to tell where he’s going. What can I do? Do I soak him or is he too far gone now? He was on his back for about 5 hours until he started to move around but he would hit the glass and jump back while also not having complete control over his body.... I’m hella sad for this little guy and it’s eating me up. Any words of advice from someone on here would be great too.

    • @JasonsExoticReptiles
      @JasonsExoticReptiles  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Completely clean out the enclosure and set back up then see how time treats him. Prevent a mite is some of the worst stuff out there in my opinion. It can be misused very easily.

    • @Austin-rs1wi
      @Austin-rs1wi 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jason's Exotic Reptiles thank you very much. I hate to say this but I may be looking into a way to end his suffering. Balled my eyes out last night about it. From what I’m researching cutting the head off or the refrigerator/freezer method seems to be the least painful for the little guy. I fucked up and used the prevent a mite stuff wrong, I thought I was doing it right. But turns out I’m not. Lesson learned sadly.

    My baby boa does the "stargazing" thing but I _think_ she is just curious about things above her. She also seems a bit uncoordinated sometimes but I think she is just insecure about been held still and is worried she is going to fall. In her enclosure she always seems perfectly normal. I'm 95% sure it's nothing. But that 5% keeps me up at night.

    • @JasonsExoticReptiles
      @JasonsExoticReptiles  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most of the time when people say stargazing it’s just the snake looking up. I’ve never actually seen a boa that somebody said it was stargazing in it actually was.

    I don't "WANT TO BE THAT PERSON"... HOWEVER...I am currently looking into stock I got from a well known Python breeder who is not a new breeder at all. Two boas I got from this person are showing symptoms and I am currently recording the boas progression and am currently looking into a way to test that doesn't require the death of the snake. I am a long time keeper and I have only seen one confirmed case in 20 years. I am restuding this disease to update myself on the virus. I hope/pray this isn't the case for my current snakes, but sadly it is seeming that these two snakes are infact carrying it. 😩

    Dont panic, yet I am. Last week I suddenly lost a big ball python girl I picked up last fall in Tinley. (Took her body to the state lab, necropsy results are still pending). Just now I noticed my white lipped in his unwarmed hide, rather cold, doing slow tongue flicks and sometimes her tongue forks are stuck together. I checked her mouth and she's got sticky mucus just like the ball i suddenly lost. 🥺
