One of my favourites. They compare many plants to spinach but this one really is. Here's a tip for washing them; don't cut leaves off first but take whole plants/shoots and just rinse or dunk them like that. Also they make lots of seeds you can use in winter to sprout like alfalfa for fresh veggies.
We stopped growing spinach when we tried the lambs quarter. Spinach seems to bolt faster than we can use it. Lambs quarter is everywhere around us and it's free!
Some states that make money destroying our food supply with soy and corn say its destructive, and they eradicate it with poison - "Don't mess with my profits, I don't need you growing your own food and learning how to live without my super GMO crop poison - ya feel me ?
Just wanted to thank you guys SO very much for all you 're doing to educate and inform. Watching this video reminded me just how blessed I was to have a grandmother who sent me into the wild plum thickets and then showed me how to make jelly from them, who made me pick up pecans off the ground and the blisters I got from shelling them . Who knew how to find and use sassafras root in a tea when I couldn't breathe. She and my mother showed me how to identify countless plants and trees and the seasons in which to look for them. I tried to pass that knowledge on to my children and grandchildren. Just one thing you might want to include in your next foraging video, and something else Grandma always reminded me of EVERY time we went foraging: Never take more than one third of what you find in one place, patch, bush, or tree. Spread your gathering out so the FREE resource can sustain itself and make sure what you are collecting is not in the path of dirty water. Keep "doing that thing you do" :-) and God Bless!
I live in New Mexico, and my 7th generation Hispanic friend showed me how to make this weed. In Spanish it's called CALIETES ( CAHL-LEE-TAYS) and you can buy it in Mexican grocery stores, but it grows everywhere! Just be SURE TO PICK IT FROM CLEAN SOIL, NOT BY A ROAD OR WHERE IT CAN ABSORB POLLUTION FROM RUN OFF OR POLLUTED SOIL! Here's how we make it: In a heat up some oil or bacon fat, add chopped onion, garlic, bell peppers (optional), green chilie, Saute until vegs are carmelizing , then add washed calietes, toss and cover on low for a few mins. Meanwhile cut up some leftover beef, pork or chicken and add to pan . Add a can of pinto or cowboy beans and mix gently. Add chopped fresh or dried cilantro, salt, pepper, italian herb blend, and red chili powder to taste. (start out a little at a time unless you know how much you like) Add a little extra water or broth so you have a good consistancy. Cover until heated through, serve with cooked rice or pan fried potatoes and salsa, warmed flour tortillas and green salad. Muey bueno! Omit meat, add more vegs for a vegitarian meal. Yumm!
I can't stop watching your videos. It's 4:30 am here in California. I must sleep so I can garden with my kids tomorrow. Love foraging and Wildcraft and all of it. All of it.
I can't tell you how much of this stuff I've either ripped out or ignored over the years (that includes queen Anne's lace that also grows on my property). thanks for pointing out resources I didn't know I had.
Another identifying trait, is that the plant sheds water like a duck. You practically can't get it wet. It wilts quickly and goes limp. If you mist it and then put it right away into a sandwich bag while foraging, it will look much better when you get it home.
I was inspired by this video to make this dip yesterday. My husband and I loved it! I am so inspired by you and your husband. We have just recently retired and our dreams are finally getting to come true.
Awesome video! My wife and I will be picking some TODAY!!! These are the kind of video's that are priceless! Our society has lost this valuable information. Helping bring this info back is a wonderful service to society!! Great job!!!
I just watched this video and headed out to the back yard, found some and cooked it up. I poured off the water into my morning tea. The leaves are like spinach and the stems have the texture of asparagus. Thank you. Can't wait to dry some for the winter months.
Thanks! I grow this for my chickens... I heard this was good for eating but didn't realize it was THAT good for you! Gonna try it in my salad today....
Neither did I and my mom has kidney issues. They said it was from Metformin that it turns out she DIDN'T even need!! They just drugged her up year after year. Only when she moved & got a new doctor did she find out. My doctor tried to put me on it, but I refuse. I'll get my nutrition under control. Devouring all your videos!!
Your videos are awesome! I know envy is a sin yet- you aren't confined in a room with men who are addicted to the news and the NCAA National Championship. You are my blessing!
Thanks for this video!! I’ve been foraging “Wild Spinach” for a couple years now but I had no idea about its nutritional value!! My kids always complain about the white powder and now I can teach them about it. Thanks!!🥰🙏🏼💖
It would be a good idea to have a series of different plants and show how to use them. Learning about different plants and how to use them is the next phase in my homestead journey so this video was very helpful. Thanks :)
You mentioned Amaranth. Can you do a video on it? Can you gather the seeds from the wild varieties? I'm sure you can eat the leaves from the wild amaranth. I have some wild stuff and I'm determined to use both Amaranth and Lamb's Quarters this summer.
I cultivate my lamb's quarters too. I can, freeze and dehydrate. Incredible food. I can't live without it. Thanks for your incredible life and sharing.
That looks incredible! It is so amazing to me, ( granted it takes very little to amaze ) but all of this edible vegetation surrounds us....the Lambs quarter looks so good and I never would have thought you could eat it! Once again many thanks to you Stacey for your wealth of knowledge and if no one has told you yet =) you have a great photographer!!God Bless both of you. See ya tomorrow.
Starting a dedicated patch of Lambs Quarter is on my to do list. I don't know if anyone else has noticed this, but I've noticed that here in Ohio with my soil conditions that LQ seems to really like the presence of lime or limestone. I've tried to get it started from seed with no luck, but it grows with no end in my limestone driveway.
I found Lamb's Quarter instantly outside, picked some, made a delicious sour cream topping for potatoes. Thanks! P.S. I thought Stinging Nettles was one of the top super foods.
Hi Stacey. I've been letting this grow in my community garden plot. I've eaten bits and it's tasty but always makes me feel a little queasy. Today I put 2 big handfuls into a smoothie with blueberries, watermelon, and almond milk and drank it quick. Started feeling bad right away and within 30 min threw up the whole thing. Have you ever heard of anyone being sensitive to lambs quarter? I'm sure it's lambs quarter and not nightshade.
Very rare, but some people are allergic to it. You might be sensitive to the oxalates. Try frying, steaming, or boiling as this will reduce the oxalates. Hope this helps.
I’m soo happy that you informed us about lambs quarters!!!i just thought it was a weed!! Thank you from the bottom of my heart!!! Every time I see it growing in our garden here in Kentucky, I leave it!! Again thank you!!!
I just discovered i got lambs quarter in my garden (east anglia, UK), so I looked up your video. Going to do some more research. Thanks Stacy once again.
Stacy can you please do more edibles like this video please just love this. Picking some today for our lunch going to put it on our sandwiches instead of lettuce.
My rabbits help it grow and they love eating it... I've had it grow over my head b4.... Lots of nutrition... We do get a bug that grows inside the older leaves so we pick and eat the tops...
One plant will produce 100's of seeds for all those new to this so called Jem of a weed. I use them in salad or add them to any dish that calls for spinach. I will surely try this recipe, looks really good. Thanks for sharing the recipe Stacy!
I've seen it around but like stinging nettle I thought it was just a weed. Thank you for opening my eyes...on every video!!! God Bless and Love you guys!!
Yum! That looks so good! Definitely need to try your recipe. Thanks for all you do. Truly appreciate the extra knowledge on these wild free foods and natural medicine. Love, hugs, prayers, and blessings!!!🙏❤👍😀
this is grate! On my land we don't have any but we were going to order some and but we had other seeds ordered to and the lambs quarter seed where a lot and did have enough money. so this month we will get them and plant them
Are you sure you don't live in Thailand? The sound of the wind chimes in your video makes me think of the sounds of the chimes at the temples in Thailand.
I just found out about this wonderful wild food. 🤔 I have seen this all over my yard as well as other places and thought it was just a weed to throw out was I wrong.😮 I tried one right off the plant taste delicious .🙂 Only had one or two plants left in the yard after throwing the rest out without knowing. Planning to dry and store for later use. 🤔 Thank you for telling me all about it .🙂
HAHAHA I am laughing at myself right now. I have been chopping it down, digging it up, and trying to get it out of my garden. I had no idea this "weed" was so beneficial. Lucky some of your viewers watch my videos and said, "Hey, go check out Stacy's video on Lambs Quarter!" Adding this video to my favorites play list so I can come reference it later. :)
I think I just pulled up handfuls of this, here in our backyard in France. I had a sneaking suspicion it was lamb's quarter, but wasn't yet ready to get serious about using it (so tossed it at the foot of our mulberry tree, for mulching! I'm going back out today, to find more. Thank you, Stacy! New subscriber.
I bet crab meat would be great in that dip! I was also thinking it would be delicious in chicken salad in place of mayo. ...great, it's 11:00pm and now I'm hungry! lol
Wow. I think this is what is growing all in my landscaping. I just keep pulling it up and throwing it out. Who knew? Thanks for the info. And I love the pottery bowl that you are mixing that in.
So funny how Doug is SOOOOOO quiet, as if he isn't there, and THEN THIS BIG HAND COMES OUT TO REACH FOR A CHIP!!! LMAO!!! SO FUNNY! Thanks Stacy for this education. I wasn't sure what lambs quarter looked like....now I see I just destroyed some good stuff in my garden darn it. Pooooot!...like grandma used to say.
Thank you for the lesson about lamb's quarter and for the yummy recipe! I had always known this as wild spinach but didn't know it was the same as lamb's quarter. I also didn't really know how to use it. Now I do. Thank you for all you share with us!
Hi from Canada. My spinach also bolts very quickly. I will definitely be gathering lambs quarters because I love spinach and I'd these are as good as you say, I will be canning them for winter
love my lambsquarter!! I let it grow in the garden until it starts to take over, then I thin it. and it grows better than spinach! thanks for the drying tip!!!
ha just realized I posted the fermenting comment on the lambs quarter video lol! great informative vid about lambs quarter, we love ours! we just cooked some up with ramps a couple weeks ago. will try this dip out today!
Hi Stacy, nice no new things On Lambsquarters, I let them all of them and poke salad grow in my yard, my question is the roots of lamb quarters minor so small what part do you eat and how do you prepare it, I think you and Doug so much you guys are awesome and so much fun to watch and learn from

Ate my first Lambs quarter tonight! It’s delicious however I wish I didn’t add salt to it. Sauté in ghee, with thin sliced carrots with a bit of Parmesan cheese as Stacy recommended in her other video

So many people have never heard of this. Coming from a poor family, was a stable in our diet.
I just found out Purslane was edible and so I went and tried it. It tastes like green apples!!!! Surprisingly good!
I have this growing everywhere on my property!!! And in my garden and been pulling them out. Going to pick some tomorrow! So, why did you cut it up on a towel??
I've always wondered about the white power on pigweed, now answered!
Ate my first Lambs quarter tonight! It’s delicious however I wish I didn’t add salt to it. Sauté in ghee, with thin sliced carrots with a bit of Parmesan cheese as Stacy recommended in her other video
Really informative video. Would love to see more of foraging for wild food with close-ups for proper identification. Thanks so much, Stacy!
Great information! Thank you! It grows in abundance here, I'm going to go pick some!
Glad I saw this. I was thinking about some ground cover around some stuff in my yard and this is perfect. Thanks.
Thanks for sharing all this great info I plan on checking it out and learning more about it too.
Love Lamb's Quarters! They come up everywhere!
Thanks I will dry some in my dehydrator this year
